Strength:

Shakes the windows

Weakness:

Little lights go out once in a while..

There are a couple of advertisments that I remember from magazines in the 70's.. the Austin Mini Cooper driving down stairs in Italy, the Yamaha SR500 that went from the U.S. through the Amazon Jungle and the Marantz that was rescued and survived the apartment fire. When I got out of the Air Force in 1976, I wanted a 2270 but at the time wouldn't be able to buy speakers with it on my meager income.. that is when I picked up the SR2000 from a wholesale place in San Francisco. It was $200 with a pair of beefy 10" 4 way speakers. The SR2000 pumps out a respectable 60 wpc @ 8 ohms.. it still sounds great (although currently residing on a shelf in my garage) but the tone honestly pales in comparison to the 2270. The SR2000 falls neatly in an area of mystery.. I have not seen any others on the market and in retrospect wonder if it is of any appreciable value. So here it is, nearly 30 years after I saw the burnt Marantz ad and I finally broke down and got one! I have the Marantz 1090 speakers hooked up to it and usually listen to "EASY LISTENING" FM channels here in the Bay Area.. but when I'm feeling a little bad, I can hook up the Lp's (ZZ Top) set the volume about 1/3 up and VVVVVvvvvvrrooom! My next step is to find a house in the country where I can crank this puppy up all day long! It is a bit of a shame that raising the volume means inviting trouble from the neighbors. If I had it to do over, I would have bought the 2270 in 1976 and sold the VW to get the speakers!! I might part with it if I can find a 2330b or a 2385.. but not till I'm sure I'm not just going sideways..

Strength:

Sound, sound, sound

Weakness:

none

I'm not a stereo junkie. I inherited this receiver from my dad when he moved to Florida. However, this thing rocks. It's about 100 pounds or something but who cares. I've managed to hook or splice just about every type of audio / video related item into it and it works great. CD, Playstation, VCR, TV, and did I mention regular stereo components. The bass is unbelievable. The sound is clean and rich. It beats 99 percent of the digital receivers I"ve heard.

Strength:

high power, very good looking, Marantz quality, Sounds great

Weakness:

Age, will usually need professional cleaning and 'tuneup'.

The 2270 is an excellent example of the phrase 'they don't build them like they used to'. To be frank, nothing made today in the 70 watt per channel range, or even double that, can come close to this receiver in brute power. But, the real difference is that this almost 30 year old hi-fi veteran can deliver all this power with sonic qualities that are about as good as it gets. I have listened to a lot of modern receivers and all fall far short of the sound quality of this Marantz receiver. Everything about this receiver, from the elegant blue tuning dial to the silky smooth gyroscopic tuning wheel scream quality. This is one of the few solid state receivers that I can recommend for use with a turntable. It's phono preamp is excellent as are the line level stages. But, this unit is pushing 30 years old and normally needs a bit of servicing to bring it up to factory spec. Normally it needs little more then a good cleaning and the replacement of some indicator lamps.

Strength:

The rich 70's Marantz sound; "curb appeal"; and, yes, it helps me relive my younger days.

Weakness:

Don't know yet, but suppose it will be maintenance...and finding a technician to do it right.

The reviews below this one prompted me to take the plunge, so it's your guys' fault. At the risk of a medium caliber marriage rift, I had to get a 2270. Returning from Vietnam to Hawaii in 1972, I bought a Marantz 2230 driving a pair of AR-3a's from a Garrard Zero-100. That sound has been with me ever since.
The 2230 bought the farm about 7 years ago; the AR's about a year ago. Broke my heart to pitch the speakers, so when I found some NIB AR-303a's the hunt was on.
The 2270 can only be described in terms of superlatives. This is the muscle car of receivers. At a true 70 WPC, the power of this receiver is incredible, delivering a bass that can make your internal organs quiver. Mid-range and highs put you into the recording studio. Melodic passages are Eiswein to the ears. And as for the 2270's aesthetics...well, there has been nothing like it before or since. Also reminds me of the pre-64 Model 70 Winchester: superb performance and classic style in one package.
In my opinion, the Marantz 2270 is too low tech, too antiquated, and so very far from tres chic for today's DINK's. However, it is ideal for us ORF's who understand true value and classic design.
So, My Bose 901's, Yamaha M-85/C-60/T-80 are retired while the Marantz/AR duo once again pleases me to no end. The kids will probably get the Yamaha/Bose. My 2270 will provide my audio satisfaction until the nursing home beckons.

Strength:

Gotta love the blue glow.
SOLID--weighs in at around 40lbs.
Gets PLENTY loud...I think 70wpc is very underrated.

Weakness:

My arms after lifting the amp out of the box it was shipped in.

If you're looking for an amplifier to drive some speakers for a simple home stereo system, forget about the Sonys, JVCs, and Pioneers you saw at Best Buy. Go on eBay, buy one of these things, and sit back and marvel at this amplifier that most would probably consider obsolete (due to the advances in digital sound that it's lacking) but probably sounds better than anything you can buy in the under $1,000 price range.

I bought this on a whim...A friend recommended I check out something in the 22xx series. I wanted something powerful, so I went for the 2270..Although looking back, I probably could have went with a less powerful unit and it would have sounded just fine with these speakers.

This amp gets LOUD, with power to spare.

Considering it's age, I was pretty impressed at the condition it was in when I got it. All the lights were working, the sound is incredible, there was very little static in the pots. Today I sent my amp out to have some minor repairs done (the power button is sticking, plus I just want it cleaned), but with a 25 year old amp, that's to be expected. That's how great this amp is to me...I wouldn't just send out any 25 year old piece of junk to be repaired for $100+ dollars, nearly half of what I paid for it. Guess I'm just missing it already, so I thought I'd write a review and tell everyone how great it is.

I'm using a Denon DCM-370 CD Player as my source, and my speakers are a pair of B&W DM602's. I'm very happy with the sound this system puts out, considering the price I paid.

I have owned one of these recievers for a while now. Absolutly astonishing. This thing sounds so good. I can't even describe the sound quality of this, It's amazing. 70 wpc @ 8ohms is very under-rated. This thing can really shake a house. They sure don't make them like this anymore.

I picked up a 2270 at a garage sale last year for $20 dollars. After $90 worth in repairs, I was blown away at it's quality. It blew away my Onkyo 80 wpc receiver -- I think this receiver can only be compared to those in the $600-1000 range today. I now have B&W DM302's hooked up to it and they sound fantastic. The only downside is that the power switch sticks and cannot turn off. I was told this cannot be repaired. Otherwise, this is a heck of a classic to own! Don't hesitate to pick one up if you find one at a garage sale!

Strength:

Heavy!!! neat looking, and awesome sound qaulity..

Weakness:

none.

I just got this as a hand me down from my father. This is a real heavy tankish reciever. The sound quality is great! I opened it up to find 2 9,000 uF caps in it and a transformer that must weigh about 20lbs. The neat silver face plate it neat to look at. What a classic reciver. If you ever find one pick it up. Its great for just a stereo system. I couldn't pick a lower date than 1995. This one was bought in 1975.

Strength:

Built for the duration - fully discrete components - Tube like warmth of sound

Weakness:

Rear panel speaker and antenna connections. Most units of that same era had those cheap clamp down connections.

Next to the fabulous Model-19 this in my opinion was their best receiver of the early to mid 70s. The power output of 70 watts per channel was rated very conservatively in that most units actually produced up to 30% more RMS output. In those days receivers were required to run at 33 percent power for one hour with both channels driven before maximum power was measured. This was known as the pre-conditioning period. Total power measured was with both channels driven for a sustained period with total distortions well under 1% from 20 to 20,000Hz. Today most receivers are measured at one channel for a brief moment or maybe the front channels only. What all of this means is you get more than enough power out of this unit to rock the house especially with efficient speakers. Yet the 2270 sounds great at low volume as well.

If you into vinyl, the phono section of this receiver rivals today’s high-end phono preamps costing hundreds of dollars. The FM section is warm and very revealing in that with the proper antenna music from the 50 year old technology of analog FM stereo radio can still be beautiful. Sure I have a modern Dolby Digital/DTS receiver but most of these new units are optimized for motion picture sound. You can buy extremely high-end gear that makes music like this old Marantz, but if you do not have a golden wallet my advice is to go to Ebay and pick one up. You can get one for less than I paid but you may have to spend a little extra getting it up to specs once you have it. It will be well worth it.
