Strength:

Great looks, tons of inputs/outputs: pre-out, main-in, 2 phonos, 2 tapes, 2 record outlets, 4 speakers, quadradial (whatever that is), filters, loudness, signal meters, Darth Vader radio dial, classic tone controls with a "mid" (now that's neat), great radio reception (the best I've heard ever in memory), a sound that will leave you thinking, where has this machine been all my life ?? Holds value, sounds great, even though design is 32 years old. Can easily be your main stereo unit, even though it's a 30 year old design. No need for an external pre-amp. Cool lit titles that pop up on dial, naming which input you are on !! Dubbing in/out 1/4" jacks on front panel too.

Weakness:

It's heavy, around 40 pounds, so make sure whoever ships it to you, double boxes it, with plenty of bubble wrap. Tell them well ahead of time, and don't be shy or bashful about it. Mine got a little beat up en route- fortunately got a major refund on the bid price.

After reading all the fine reviews for this vintage receiver, and seeing its great looks on ebay auctions, I just had to have and try one ! Well let me say, it lives up to the stellar reputation 100%. Drag raced it against my more modern NAD 2200 power amp- the Marantz gave it a run for it's money musically til the volume knob stops. They made friends after, the Marantz runs the NAD through its pre-out. Of course the NAD has more peak power, but up to it's limit, the MARANTZ sounds every bit as good, (perhaps even better, depending on your tastes- it may be more listenable due to easier control) Definitely a warmer sound, not harsh or bright. This 2270 has a very warm, textured sound- you'll swear there's tubes in there. If you play it "flat" on the tone controls, you can turn it up full volume with acceptable (little) distortion- that's how good it sounds ! And my speakers are not high dollar by any stretch. This is not the typical "beyond 5 on volume, sounds like crap and distorts" receiver. This is a true audiophile receiver of yesteryear- that still sounds great today. I like it so much, going to get another, and bridge them, one per channel. Try to go up against the NAD on more even terms. (I love showdowns, and like listening to them compete !) 2270's routinely go for $200-300 on ebay, which says something about how good they are. Price new in 1971 was $569- that is around $2500-2800 in 2003 dollars !! So this is no junkwagon- if you buy one, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend getting one while they still are plentiful- as they will only increase in value as time goes on. $300 for a mint 2270 is well worth it, without blinking. Junky surround sound A/V's go for that, and can't even compare. (I listened to those too- the 2270 will eat one for a snack !)

Strength:

Everything about the Marantz 2270 is wonderful...Sometimes if I close my eyes I actually think the Cars are in my bedroom.

Weakness:

Will need occasional cleaning, etc. The cost of this upkeep is well worth it, though.

My father purchased this receiver in the early 70's. Little did I know that when he handed it down to me over 25 years later that I was receiving 50 pounds of pure pleasure! It wasn't until I began listening to my peer's "systems" that I realized how very lucky I was...While their $1,000 Denon amplifiers produced harsh, piercing sounds, my old and "busted" Marantz 2270 could force life into any pair of speakers with amazing results. I have never heard another receiver capable of reproducing music in such a rich fashion.

Strength:

Everything!

Weakness:

Absolutly, positively NOTHING!

Lets see, by the time I was 16, I had gone through a bunch of different recivers and speakers and I hated all of them. Then my dad found a Marantz 2230 that some guy was getting rid of at a garage sale (for $20!) along with some RSL floor speakers. I was amazed at the sound quality from such and old unit. I searched everywhere for another Marantz for myself but I could find none. Then came Christmas and a smallish, but oddly heavy package sat waiting for me. I tore open the box and found my very own 2270! I got it hooked up about 30 minutes later to my dads RSLs. Holy crap! Words cant describe the warm rich sound that this piece of equipment could put out. In fact im am still listening to this sweet sound as I type this. I reciently found the cherrywood cabinet ive been looking for and it makes it look even beter! I absolutly will not part with this masterpice as long as I live! Now the hunt is on for another 2200 series for the livingroom.

Huge sound for 70 watts.

I saved up my allowance when I was in high School (1974) to buy this awsome amp. I have been using it ever since. My original set of speakers were the Advent 2 ways with a 10" bass and a film tweeter. I blew up the tweeters many times. My buddy had the same set of Advents, and when we stacked them, watch out! I still have my set of Advent up in the attic awaiting a re-cone job. I wish I would have bought the wood case with the amp, but my allowance didn't stretch the extra 20 bucks. This amp will still blow your head off!

Strength:

Build quality that has proven the test of time.

Weakness:

None that I have found after 28 years of ownership.

Purchased new the week before Thanksgiving, November 1974, which makes the unit 28 years old now. Lets see, in 1974 I was listening to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Neal Young just to mention a few. Well, the Rolling Stones are still touring and the other groups are also still active, and I still listen to these groups on the same receiver that I purchased right after I graduated from college. I matched the Marantz 2270 to a pair of Allison II's that I purchased in 1975, and had refurbished a few years ago. Allison was recently resurected as a new company and are now building the same speakers they did in 1975. I believe the Martanz and speakers will last my lifetime and that I will have to set up a clause in my Will who gets them when I'm gone. The unit powers a Home Entertainment system, DVD, VHS, in addition to the same turntable when new. About 3 years ago I had the unit overhaulded for minor fixes and bulb replacemnts. I also had the foresight to purchase the woodgrain case which is in mint condition. Overall, I believe I have one of the best stereo receivers ever build that is still in mint condition. This unit will never be sold as long as I am alive.

Strength:

Build Quality ( it can survive a house fire!!!) Looks like a piece of fine furniture Can't stop looking at it, that Blue/Green dial is so pretty.

Weakness:

If there were any, they would have showed up in thirty years of use.

I can't understand why anyone would ever part with one of these, mine was given up on about 9 years ago by some idiot who didn't want to pay to have it fixed, he just donated it to the tech who gave him the estimate, and there it sat on a shelf until one day I walked in and saw it setting there lifeless, after working out a deal with the shops owner, it was thoroughly serviced, cleaned, and restored to its factory fresh glory. It even had the wood case in mint cond. The tech had no idea that these things had become so sought after and that I, being someone who was born the same year as the 2270 could be so obsessed with aquiring it. Ever since I brought it home I have been AMAZED. If you have never heard what seventy REAL Marantz watts sounds like, you are in for a BIG suprise. Do yourself a favor and hunt one of these receivers down and buy it. Unless you win the lottery or make six figures a year, it will be the last powerplant you will ever buy or need, even head banging bassheads can get their jollies with one of these. God Allmighty, what an incredible sound !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

What you would expect from Marantz in the 70's. Top shelf!

Weakness:

None.

I bought my 2270 back in 1978. My boss at the time, was upgrading his system and he asked me, if I was interested in buying it. I was only 17 at the time, and I didn't have the scratch to buy it. So, I asked "good old Mom" to kick in with me, under the premise of a Christmas gift. Now, my only problem was, I didn't have any decent speakers to hook up to it. I managed to destroy, just about anything I had. Also, the tuner's tuning string was broken and a few of the lamps were out. I tried to repair the string, but I ended up losing interest in the receiver. It was relegated to the basement, in pieces. When I turned 19, I went into the Navy. When I was 22, and while I was in Italy on deployment, I bought a Marantz, SR-8100 DC Receiver. I also bought a pair of Cerwin-Vega, D9-L's. I, then used this combination for the next 20 years. It was only when I'd discovered Ebay, that my interest in my 2270, was rekindled. First, I'd found out that the 2270, was really a sought after piece. Secondly, I found that I could find parts for it. I then went on a parts buying binge and totally restored it. When I finally finished, I could not believe my eyes or ears. My 8100 just didn't compare. I just never realized what a gem, I actually had. All those lost years. Well, my 2270 is now my main receiver and the 8100, is now relegated to the basement. As far as the new equipment out there, you'd be hard pressed to find anything comparable, under $1000. If you can find a 2270, grab it! You won't regret it. It took me over 20 years, to finally appreciate mine.

Strength:

FM tuner and well built amplifier.

Weakness:

It's getting old.

I bought my 2270 in 1975 like some others who have commented before me. A friend and I bought similar systems at that time but the same receiver. My original purchase was combined with an Ariston Audio turntable and Yamaha NS series speakers. A few components have been added over the years but I've have 25 years of enjoyment from this system. I've started to have some problems due to dirty swtiches and was just about to replace this system with something new but after reading your comments maybe I'll see if I have as much luck with a little maintenance.
Thanks for reminding me what a faithful receiver it has been.
After sound testing the home theatre system I can add that, after 25 years very little has changed. Give me natural sound and spare the gimmicks.
