Hi, folks I'm from Bulgaria and I just bought this wonderfool piece of electronic art for $170 ;) w/o the wooden box. It's in a perfect condition. I must say, that 2270 is a great rec. with PERFECT sound. And it's 30 y.o. ... Can you believe it? :-)))))

Strength:

Incredible sound for the dollar.

Weakness:

None

I've been searching Ebay for over a year trying to find a good 2270 for a fair price. I kept getting outbid in the last minute and the prices were to high for my Canadian dollars. In early Dec. I found a perfect 2270 in a wood case for just over $250 U.S. The seller put the receiver in the vintage audio section and I don't think that many people new it was even there. I won it for $255 and the seller lived only a couple hours away. The wood case is in fair condition, but the receiver is a perfect 10. The sound is unbelievable. There is so much power in reserve and it produces that beautiful warm Marantz sound. I am sorry to say that I'm the person to ruin this products 5 star rating though. I'm giving it a 6 out of 5 for value.

Weakness:

The lights burn out, I had to replace the tuner string, and the power switch has gone out twice. This unit has been used daily for 30 years and this is the only maintenance i have had to do up until now. It needs some electrical servicing finally!

My dad bought this reciever in '72 in a small store that later became the Best Buy co. in Minneapolis. He has used it for years. I "borrowed" it from him when he bought a brand spankin new Pioneer AV system. I later found a backup in a pawn shop for $90 which I consider a deal of a lifetime. The sound of these are incredible. My dad's has since been returned to him and is in need of repair. I imagine it is a cap or somthing like that. 30 years is a long time.

Strength:

Incredible warm and realistic sound and plentiful power; magnificent Japanese build quality; beautiful appearance; can last a lifetime and then some; discrete analog design

Weakness:

AM radio performance could be better, maybe it's my unit. (It's not a Collins R-390/URR military receiver)

I bought a Marantz 2270 in 1975 with a wood case just after getting my electrical engineering degree; I bought right the first time and I've used it continuously since then. Mine was manufactured in Japan (they moved production from the USA). Still have the original Marantz carton and manual. It's such a great receiver, I will never sell it, I'll get it repaired if needed. So this is one serial number that will not be on the market till I die- for possibly 20 or 30 or 40 more years. It's discrete transistor design has an incredible sound, nothing like the crap A/V digital integrated circuit units sold today. I'm driving a pair of OHM loudspeakers, also from the same era. The 2270 was designed to drive anything in the range of 4 to 16 ohms and it states this in the manual. The brushed aluminum front panel and blue backlighting look great. It needed replacement of 2 small-signal transistors in 1980 and occassionally I replace a front panel lamp. The main power switch sticks once in a while (It prefers to be pressed in a certain way) and I understand it is not uncommon to replace these switches which are still available. I doubt there are many receivers produced in recent years that can compare with the sound quality this delivers. My only regret is that it does not have both the gyroscopic wheel driven analog tuning display AND an additional digital frequency display, as with analog tuning displays you have to guess a bit about what station you are tuned to. At $500 28 years ago and one repair, it doesn't owe me anything. If this exact model were still made, I'd buy a new one today to be sure it would last me another 28 years. It has more than adequate power, with the big OHM floor model 4 ohm 4 element speakers I only need to crank the volume control to the 10 O'clock position. It has none of the harshness to the sound that newer equipment has. It deserves more than a 5 rating. In my opinion the prices for used 2270's in good working order are too low.

Strength:

Classic beauity and that blue glow, Powerful, not underrated like everyone says - just honestly rated, those who know the dishonesty of how most if not all companys today rate the power of their equipment know this.

Weakness:

None, a 30 year old amp that shows up all but the most expensive equipment today! For the Dolby Digital people though - if you buy a seperate DD decoder and hook it up as a front end into the mains of several Marantz amps you'll have one beauityful sounding home theater setup.

I've used several amps and recevers over the years, my favorite being a vintage Akai aa-r32 which sounded very good at 45wpc, Sadly though the power transformer burned up so i just decided to get a new unit, Now I've herd of Marantz before but never gave it much though to buy one until I was out one day getting a new cartridge for my 63' AR turntable and one cought my eye, Turned out to be a semi rough 2270. Visuaily it's not perfect and looks as though it was dropped at some point with a slight bend in the lower right corner of the faceplate. I bought it on the spot though and hooked it up as soon as I got home, immeaditly I noticed how much cleaner and warm the sound was, after several weeks of just sitting and listening without distraction I was hooked, pure musical heaven!, This unit performed flawlessly despite looks. I will never buy anything but Marantz again and will certainly never part with this unit at any cost!

After useing this amp I got rid of my others, I use a 63' AR XA turntable (looking into Thorens though which I may add had several AR engineer's working with them at times) a set of AR 228 loudspeakers and a high end Pioneer DVD player.

Build quality Tuner section soundstage Power power power

Weakness:

sorry none - this unit has passed the tet of time.

THIS IS FOR MARANTZ 2285B Having read the overwhelming reviews for the 2270, I decided to get one as I adore vintage stereo of high quality. I did quite a bit of research and opted for the younger cousin "2285B", which is a tad newer (78-80), has a better tuner, and a little extra power(2 x 85) After plugging this monster thing (39LBS) in, my first surpise was how little volume knob turn it needed to send my capable wharfedale speakers into orbit: Huge, open and warm sound at the 9 o'clock position. The Tuner section is just fantastic - this is where the sound more than anything resembles true audiophile Tube gear. The quality of this Amp is amazing, 25 year old knobs and bottons works almost like new with a distinctive feel of craftmanship. Inside you'll find an enormous powersupply and two huge 15.000 micro fahrad caps. everything seems to be made overkill. Be aware, as with all heavy amps - they need at leat 45-60 minuttes warm up they reach operating temps in all circuits - then they shine. What happend - did all the 1970 engineers retire - the distinguished gentlemen in suits, smoking pipe while designing units that would enthrill their sons and grandsons. I dont know - the receivers I see today is a sad generation of black plastic and underdimensioned powersupplies. I guess for every engineer with ambition, you'll find 1 cost controller and 1 marketing guy.

Performance, reliability Man! Did I get my money's worth or what?

Weakness:

It is heavy, I remember almost losing the tips of my fingers sliding it into the wood case. But, it IS a Heavyweight!

Bought new in 1972.This is the unit I've used on a daily basis for 31 years. It's in perfect condition. Never had a repair or professional cleaning. The walnut case still has a beautiful finish. This is a guys' powerhouse type of sound, crank it up and let it blow your hair back.

ample current. and i'm thinking 70rms at 8ohms is a bit shy of what its really producing, a previous poaster had a good description of why. overall a1 quality.

Weakness:

needed 2 bulbs.

Of my piles of gear, this one ranks right up there in the top three, and i've only had it a little over a month. the look is unreal, i love it, i got one with the wood case, almost mint, a few nicks here and there but the face is completely flawless. this is a quality built machine. yes mac and nad can outrun it, but theoverall soundstage that the marantz produces is accurate and damn powerful, excelent clarity. im running it as a bedroom system with a pair of my ancient OHM d's and a set of ar-2a's. it's an awesome, quality piece of history that can give some good gear a run for it's money.

Strength:

Great looks, tons of inputs/outputs: pre-out, main-in, 2 phonos, 2 tapes, 2 record outlets, 4 speakers, quadradial (whatever that is), filters, loudness, signal meters, Darth Vader radio dial, classic tone controls with a "mid" (now that's neat), great radio reception (the best I've heard ever in memory), a sound that will leave you thinking, where has this machine been all my life ?? Holds value, sounds great, even though design is 32 years old. Can easily be your main stereo unit, even though it's a 30 year old design. No need for an external pre-amp. Cool lit titles that pop up on dial, naming which input you are on !! Dubbing in/out 1/4" jacks on front panel too.

Weakness:

It's heavy, around 40 pounds, so make sure whoever ships it to you, double boxes it, with plenty of bubble wrap. Tell them well ahead of time, and don't be shy or bashful about it. Mine got a little beat up en route- fortunately got a major refund on the bid price.

After reading all the fine reviews for this vintage receiver, and seeing its great looks on ebay auctions, I just had to have and try one ! Well let me say, it lives up to the stellar reputation 100%. Drag raced it against my more modern NAD 2200 power amp- the Marantz gave it a run for it's money musically til the volume knob stops. They made friends after, the Marantz runs the NAD through its pre-out. Of course the NAD has more peak power, but up to it's limit, the MARANTZ sounds every bit as good, (perhaps even better, depending on your tastes- it may be more listenable due to easier control) Definitely a warmer sound, not harsh or bright. This 2270 has a very warm, textured sound- you'll swear there's tubes in there. If you play it "flat" on the tone controls, you can turn it up full volume with acceptable (little) distortion- that's how good it sounds ! And my speakers are not high dollar by any stretch. This is not the typical "beyond 5 on volume, sounds like crap and distorts" receiver. This is a true audiophile receiver of yesteryear- that still sounds great today. I like it so much, going to get another, and bridge them, one per channel. Try to go up against the NAD on more even terms. (I love showdowns, and like listening to them compete !) 2270's routinely go for $200-300 on ebay, which says something about how good they are. Price new in 1971 was $569- that is around $2500-2800 in 2003 dollars !! So this is no junkwagon- if you buy one, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend getting one while they still are plentiful- as they will only increase in value as time goes on. $300 for a mint 2270 is well worth it, without blinking. Junky surround sound A/V's go for that, and can't even compare. (I listened to those too- the 2270 will eat one for a snack !)
