After winning $1000 give-away at a local stereo dealer, I put the money toward a DSP-A1. This replaces a Yamaha 2092 which I had really enjoyed. What can I say other than the DSP-A1 is superb -- I'm far from finished tweaking and adjusting it so I'm sure I haven't come close to utilizing its maximum potential. This is a great sounding unit and a great "toy" for a technophile. The sound fields are superb - the 7 channel setup is the only way to go with the high end Yamaha units. |

Strength:
This is my second Yamaha product in the past year. My first that I bought last May was the DSP-A3090. Before purchasing that amp, I had my eyes set on the DSP-A1. Unfortunately at the time the A1 was priced out of my budget. Being in the military living in Japan has some serious advantages to buying audio equipment though. I purchased this DSP-A1 for $800 NEW,(only one they had) due to them phasing the product out and getting ready for the new DSP-AX1. The sound quality is as good as my 3090, but I wanted the DTS version before I left Japan.
Weakness:
Only weakness that I have seen so far is the damn remote, and having to have a degree at Harvard to understand the owners manual. Awesome product, would recommend to anyone who enjoys quality, quality, QUALITY products. Similar Products Used: Yamaha DSP-A3090 |

Strength:
Modes without DSP.
Weakness:
Any mode with DSP delays. I too fell into the trap and purchased this over hyped poorly reviewed, by the media experts, product. The DSP modes do not enhance the quality of the presentation in any way. Instead they obscure detail by placing a vail over the entire sound field. The DSP delays lean out the bass reduce dynamic range, and destroy ambience. Subtle cues placed in the sound field to add drama are obscured. The DSP modes are nothing more than marketing hype used to differentiate this product and justify the price. If you have been listening to a particular DSP mode for Dolby Digital movies, switch to the straight Dolby Digital mode without all DSP and you will hear the diference. |

Strength:
Sound processing, clarity, shrill highs, full and rich lows, accurate vocals
Weakness:
None whatsoever This is a superb integrated amp that I use to power a pair of Bose Series 6 901 speakers and a Sony changer. I listen to classical, jazz, blues and blues rock. I am a musician and the amp is a joy. I am hearing single notes and vocals that I've never heard before. I plan to upgrade the speakers to Def Tech BP2002tl and the new and just out this month Yamaha C996 DVD changer for home theater use as well. Similar Products Used: Yamaha CP625 |
