After looking at many receivers, annd finding the best reviews, and for that matter sound in the Yamaha line, I looked into the DSP-A1,it was too expensive, had no tuner, and a lot of DSP programs, and features I wasn't gonna use. The RX-V2092 was discontinued, and the 2095 was a few dollars over my budget, so I found the 995, it had Dolby Digital, DTS, 100 watts x5, a tuner, all the inputs I need plus 25 DSP programs. I bought it, and am amazed with its sound and capabilities. I comboed it up with some Boston Acoustics VR-950 mains, and Definitive BP1X sourrounds. No center, yet, so I output from main, as well as the sub, which in an apartment might overdo it. But as for the receiver, it is one of the best, and everybody looking for high audio capabbilites, without a high price this is what to go for!

Well, after much research (and much graduation present money), I decided to get the Yamaha RX-V995. I had originally thought to go with the R-V1105, but since Uncle's had the 995 for the list price of the 1105/795, I decided to move up. The unit was $825 shipped. I also ordered the Cambridge Soundworks MovieWorks 308. This is a MAJOR upgrade from my old Optimus STA-795...stereo reciever, w/o remote etc. I am _VERY_ pleased with my reciever, it arrived within the time frame Uncle's said it would. A few concerns, though, which if any readers have the answer to, I would appreciate:
1. Uncle's removed the barcode from the box. Does this mean that they report the unit as damaged/destroyed, and collect my full $800? The packaging seemed to be in original, unopened condition, so I am 99.5% sure my unit is new.

2. The cooling fan inside the case spins up briefly at power-on, then spins down again. Is this normal? Right now, so it won't heat up, I have two 120VAC ancient computer fans blowing into it, and it doesn't really bother me to have that, I'm just wondering if it's broken.

3. How can you tell if the remote is the new one vs. the old one? Mine is the RAV190 (V268680). Everything I've heard about this remote being a POS was right. But, it doesn't make this a bad purchase. None of the above stuff does (although if Uncle's pulled a fast one, I'll be pissed).

I apologize if any of these questions are answered elsewhere, and I will surely RTFM if told to do so.

--MK

This is my second review of this receiver. After posting my first review, I have been receiving tons of e-mai. So I decided to help you guys out a little more and address the more asked questions. Here we go: 1-IS IT REALLY DEAD QUIET? Yes, it is. No hum or hiss. Nothing. Zip. But of course my hole system is plugued into a dedicated AC power line filter/conditioner(POWER WEDGE II, itself plugued into the wall via CARDAS GOLDEN power cord). Even without the AC filter, this receiver is very, very quiet.
2-WHERE IS IT MADE? Malasya.
3-WARRANTY? 5 years, if not bought from mail-order.
4-DOES IT HAVE ANY "NIGHT MODE" FOR LATE NIGHT VIEWING? No, it does not, but get yourself a good headphone and I dont see a problem.
5-CAN ONE HOOK TWO PAIRS OF SURROUDS SPEAKERS UP? Yes, it can.
6-A/B SPEAKERS? SECOND ZONE CONTROL? Definitely.
7-HOW MANY DIGITAL INPUTS? 7. Two coaxial(CD and DVD).
8-DO THE DSP MODES REALLY WORK? Try PRO-LOGIC ENHANCED in Pro-logic, 70 MM ADVENTURE for DD and CHURCH for live CD recordings and you will see.
9-DOES IT REMEMBER THE DSP SETTINGS? Yes, but not the subwoofer level. Sorry.
10-WHAT ARE THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS ONE AND HIS BIG BROTHERS 2095/A-1? The A-1 sounds slightly better and has all kinds of on board EQs. Definitely worth the money IF yoy have the money. Also, both units have more DSPs(what for?) and are able to accept an extra pair of front effect speakers and two equalizers. The 995 cannot.
11-IS IT REALLY, REALLY QUIET? YES! Trust me, man!
12-DOES THE TUNER LEAKS INTO THE CHANNELS? Havent had this problem. Yet.
See you gyus later. Iuri.

So I get the call from Jeff @ A@B Sound here in Edmonton last Friday. The V995s are finally in. I leave a trail of smoke between the office and the store. I been waiting 2 months plus for this receiver. Now it's been a part of "the system" for a week (replacing a Pioneer Pro-logic receiver) and I couldn't be happier. Everything is starting to break in perfectly. My wife was amazed at the DTS decoding (DragonHeart)and the music reproduction. She has "perfect pitch" and woe betide them that miss a note now.
I'm having entirely too much fun setting up the various DSP functions. CD sound with the "effects" off is dandy as well.
The only thing I would have liked to see is one more digital input for my satellite receiver but this ain't no big thing and something I can work around.
DTS, DD5.1, Pro-Logic -- all sound excellent with this unit. But I really, really like messing with the DSP options! I've got my listening area sounding a lot like some of my fav live venues. I'm kinda partial to "flamenco" guitarists right now so the likes of DiLucia, DiMeola, Lopez, Liebert, Cook et al are really sounding very fine in the customized "jazz club" setting.
This is, generally, my first major exposure to the full-tilt "Home theatre/audio" market, but I did a lot of homework before making my decisions. I know this is a bit off-topic as reviews go but I need to express my appreciation to Jeff and his crew at A&B Sound for the advice and support. I know I was driving them nuts but they put up with it and never bitched. (at least not when I was around) I heartily suggest and recommend A&B to all the folks in Alberta and British Columbia interested in making A/V purchases. And if you don't see what you want - ask, they can usually get it for you. (and that goes for their music dept. as well. They got a copy of "Video Essentials" for me in right short order.)
My starter system---
Yamaha V995 receiver,
Toshiba 55H60 TV (excellent picture resolution with "component" inputs
Toshiba 3109 DVD (like the HDCD feature)
Teac CD (I Know - changin' it later)
Star Choice satellite
Definitive Tech. BP8 front speakers
Energy C2 rear speakers
Energy ES10 subwoofer
Energy 300 centre
and a lot of excellent DH Labs speaker wire and Interconnects (from Classic Hi-Fi in Edmonton in case somebody was needing to get some - e-mail me for phone numbers etc.)
Have to give the V995 full marks even if I didn't really compare it with a lot of other stuff. Hard to beat at the price - even in Canuck bucks. We're both very happy with the decision I made! And most of you know how important the "we" part is.

Thank You, thank you, thank you for the audio review folks and all the people who posted messages regarding the Y995. I bought this unit after looking at HK65 a week ago. Have not been disappointed with this product. Excellent value for power vs feature. Also am the lucky one to actually receive the new remote from Yamaha with this unit (don't have to ship mine back for a replacement). If you are in the market for a receiver, this is the one to get !!!!

Got my Rxv995 a month ago. Well big boost to my hometheater with the new 12 inch. sub woofer it realy rock's the room.! Clear as a crystal!!!My important question for the beatiful 995 unit is the fan inside it. What time does this thing works? since I always check this all the time specially when it produce a continuos heat at the top portion. The blower seems not working as it should be. If somebody have the answer, feel free to tell me. I will be so glad to hear from you...HAPPY LISTENING TO ALL

Got my Yamaha RX-V995 through costsheets.com for $750.00 shipping included. There was a long delay of almost 2 months due to factory backlog. Have used the receiver for a week and I can say it has been worth the wait. The unit is solid and attractive. The DSP modes are distinctive (they don't all sound alike). On movies, this unit brings out awesome sounds. I played "Mr. Nice Guy" laserdisc on dts and the sound was much better than Pro Logic. It was the most realistic home theatre sound I've heard at home! Liked the on-screen speaker adjustment - very handy. The remote suite me just fine, since I only have a LD player and a Phono player.

I just got my RXV-995 from www.sounddistributors.com real close to the cheapest price i was able to find. Worth the little extra for the personal service I received. This is a great receiver. i first was going to go with a seperate amp and tuner - but after telling these guys what type of speakers I had - they talked me into this unit. I love it. Sounds great and has extra inputs to hook up future stuff. I heard there was a hiss at low volumes - but I can not hear it. I am very happy with this unit.
