While the amplifier section is lacking in watts available,(80 watts x 5), it should be fine for most applications.
I use the 992 as a preamp for my 4 Onkyo M504 power amps connecting to my 5 Definitive Tech. speakers.

The 992 has one of the best Dolby Digital decoder on the market and the DSP modes are fun. For me, the 992 was a PERFECT match for my home theater system!

This is a quality piece of equipment that should give years of enjoyment!

I traded up to this badboy after months of agony. I was not sure which receiver to choose. I had a Denon Int Amp from about 8 years ago with on DPL. It still sounded great but I was missing out. I almost bought the AVR-2700(Denon) but a little out of my price range of 1200CAD and for what you got I was not convinced of the price. I also thought about the Sony 30ES but not enough good things said in any of the postings to outweigh the bad. I then thought about the Yamaha V795 or V793. So...I went to the store today and saw this one marked up at 899CAD. I managed to buy, I mean steal it at 650CAD or 400USD plus tax including the trade. I have a Sony S3000 DVD player I hooked into it and in one word WOW! The thing was amazing!!! My only compaint it the remote looks kind of dorky however very smart and actually useful. I programed in all of my other components without any problems and the manual was very helpful on several occasions, just as a refresher. The DSP modes are quite fun too!I could go on and on but this is a really great piece and do yourself a favour a pick up one. Thumbs Up!

When I came across the reviews on the Carver Cinema System 5.2 speakers and saw they were discounted to $699 I ordered them that day. I didn't have a receiver to drive them, and read the reviews below which convinced me to buy the RX-V992. Am I glad I did!
The sound from a JVC XV-2000BK DVD is unbelievable. Crisp, clean with smooth bass transitions. There's plenty of power for these 4 ohm speakers, and the ambience is so realistic you are immersed in the video experience. (Try Godzilla, it'll rock your world.)

I would have to agree Bruce, Great Price and maybe, just maybe when DTS comes into play then you move up. I'm not too keen on buying the same movies again just to hear them in another format.

After owning the 793 for 3 months, I was hooked on Yamaha. Getting to know my salesmen well, he brought to my attention that the 992 was clearing out for the new 995's. I talked to the Yamaha rep for western canada, asking what would be the difference in the two(793-992).I was told the larger current supply(amp) would perform better than the 793's, for base responce, just by the increased damping facter. So I brought the 992 home, and noticed the difference, a much cleaner base. The extra s-video connections are handy, as well as the extra 6 or 7 lbs in sure wieght, the difference I paid,$199, was well worth it! Looking forward to upgrading to the 995 sometime or 2095 would be excellent, any thoughts?

I purchased a demo 992 for $450 ($500 including a 5 year warranty). This Dobly Digital receiver is replacing an old Pioneer Pro-Logic system.
First, the Digital movies are incredible. This receiver reproduces the movie-theatre sound closest to anything I've heard for the money. The 80w x 5 is more power then you need for any home theatre system. I enjoy setting all the speakers to small and using the two subwoofers out to feel the explosions.

The Dolby-Digital enhanced and movie theatre settings really add to the digital effect (or pro logic). Twister is unbelievible and Armeggedon is so real sounding. There is a very natural sound that comes from the receiver.

Second, a surprise!!! I purchased this for the many s-video inputs. I needed a control center to switch my many components, including the one I am currently typeing on! I have an ATI - All in Wonder video card in my computer. I have used this card for some time and have been disappointed in the s-video output onto my tv. The reciever now is the input of my computer and the quality of video is 100% better. I do not know why but it was barely usable prior to the receivers input. I only used the DVD Encores output which was perfect to the tv. Now, I I can even surf the web on my big screen tv.I use a computer Encore DVD player with coaxil AC3 audio in the reciever. I have used different tvs with the same result. I have a big screen Toshiba so it wasnt the tv. The receiver definatley does something to the signal. I do not know what but I love it. My system is in 800 x 600 and readible from 15 feet away.

Anyway, even without the excellent video quality this system is worth it in sound. Thats why it gets 5 speakers.

OK OK OK!
i would like to say a few things, like:

FUCK ME WHAT AN AMP!!!
WOW I LOOKED AT A LOT OF OTHER BRANDS AND RECIVERS AND I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE YAMAHA RXV-992 I HAVE HAD MINE FOR ABOUT 8 MONTHS AND I THINK THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN NAMED GODS CHILD, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

Although i must admit that i think it would have to be one of the best sounding recivers in 2 channel stereo mode, but i think that there is a lot of amp that is behind that, in all of the theater and pro logic modes, i think that it would need to go close to benig one of the best on the market.

I am very much interested in seeing what the new RXV-995 can offer if it anything like it older brother the RXV-992 i think that it will also be a big hit!

Yamaha leads in the Home Theater Market, as far as im concered for a few reasons:
1. You get a shit lot of equiptment of a good price!
2. A really good warranty that thankfuly i have not needed to use as yet. (touch wood)
3. A great sound that shits all over Sony, Denon, Onkyo, and all other brands in the same cat. as Yamaha that i have heard.
4. Also a company that makes its own IC's and Processors, and actually put them into there own recivers and also others unlike some of Sony's stuff! (Sony ref. to review on Sony Strde-715).
5. Just about all of Yamaha's equiptment is made in japan unlike Sony!

Yamaha i take my hat off to you for this one!!!

keep up the good work, all the people in the RXV-992 JAPAN factory.

This has all been heard through a set of Richter Wizards and a Richter Griffen, and Merlins. (See review on Richter-Wizard MKII-Merlin MKII-Griffin MKI).

Bulid out of 5 - it gets a 4.8, (gold terminals would have been nice in a unit of this price)

Sound in 2 channel stereo, out of 5 - it gets a 5 (This is if not the best sounding 2ch stereo sound that i have heard out of a 5 ch. reciver.)

Sound Pro logic, AC3 DD, theater out of 5 - its a 4.5 (i would still like to hear a reciver that elimanits that really weard echo/light fake sound in the rear, and i think that this is the closest that i have got as yet.)

OVER ALL 4.5 out of 5

I have the RX-V992 and really enjoy it. It has everything you need except DTS decoding. As I understand there are not many DTS DVD's out there and it will take a very long time for it to be a standard. But DD will always be there. My favorite DSP effect is the "70mm Movie Theater". It really kicks.

Very nice, except they forgot 5.1 channel input. For a receiver with so much (bells & whistles) how did they forget the most critical input for an A/V receiver. Other than that it's an excellent piece of equipment. I would give it a better rating, but when I e-mailed Yamaha and asked if there was any way to upgrade for DTS, they said buy a RXV-995 or 795.
