I auditionned A/B this unit together with Denon and Onkyo receivers and also a DSP-A1, and I finaly choosed the 2095.
Although the sonic differences were small (do you really expect to get something VERY bad in this price range?) I prefered the Yamaha sound for home theater. It sounded closer from the real movie theaters` sound: it is definitively cleaner and matches my JMLABS Cobalt very well. I sure would have had some doubts if I wanted to get a system for music only (but I would be a fool to buy a HT receiver for music only :-)

The DSP modes are very good, and certainly worth having them. The so-called "audiophile" people giving 1 speaker to Yamaha products (obviously without even listening any Yamaha receiver) simply because they have more features (DSP) than other vendors are as smart as people criticising a car because it has a preinstalled AIRCO. Sure, the AIRCO has nothing to do with the car performance, but having it is always best isn`t it?

The only thing I didn`t like is the binding post: very cheap!

Anyway: awesome receiver, excellent sound, excellent features -> 5 stars.

Great receiver! Have had mine for 6 mos. now, dont regret one day of it.The remote is a bit of a pain, especially if youre like me and constantly hitting buttons and adjusting things in the dark. A full light display would be nice. Thats one reason I bought my Marantz 2000MK 2 weeks later. Much better remote (but make sure you have STOCK in Duracell, this is one battery hungry remote). The DSPs are well desinged and sound great, especially after months of tweaking to various CDs and DVDs(the Doors really do sound great in Roxy theater mode), but you really do need all 7 speakers to get the effect the engineers intended you to have. Movies sound just as good, though can be a bit bright at times. But hey, theyres always power amps.Overall this is one digitally mastered marvell. 5 stars to the designers at Yamaha!!

I recently purchased this unit and mated it to Energy c-6 mains, c-4 rears, AC-300 centre and an e:XL-S10 sub. I have not purchased front effects as yet. After shopping around for several months, I found this combination for home theater to equal the quality of systems worth over double the price. The remote is a disappointment, but I knew that when I purchased the unit. For cd listening, I honestly prefer the stereo in my Lexus, but only because my children do not drown out Metallica when I'm listening in my car. The sound quality of DTS rivals the Silver City theaters sound, quite a leap in technology in a short period of time. This system is worth consideration to shoppers.

I just bought this product and have a few questions to my fellow yamaha rxv owners...
*Note, I have based my rating on a nationally publicated magazine's rating, which bascially gave it a 4.5 (I rounded up to 5) The mag basically said: the receiver was awesome for home theater, but one could find "smoother" performance for a lesser price if you were only going to use it to listen to music.

Anyway, my questions if anybody could be so kind to help:

1) Where am I supposed to place the "front effects" speakers?

2) Would Cambridge Soundworks "Movie Works 5.1" speaker system be a good match?

3) I already have two JBL main speakers but need a center, surround, front effects and subwoofer...any recommendations?

Thanks

I bought my Yamaha 2095 last June99 for less than US$1200,
great receiver...no complaints...I just hope it lasts at least
20 years considering I paid that much for it... also paired
it with bose AM-10s (5 spkrs + sw)...sounds great...I just don't know if
they're really a good match...

I am in the process of buying a A/V receiver for my family room. I am considering the Marantz SR880 MKII ($1199)and the Yamaha RX-V2095 ($1599). Is there that much of a difference for $400?

To Eric, I had same settings as yours for about 7 months now, one comment: I love it. Best system I ever had.

Jerry,
I don't know much about the other receiver...but the Yamaha RXV 2095 is great!

Not only that, but if you search around you can get it for 1200 bucks...I know I
did!

Strength:

Clean sound, versatile, powerful

Weakness:

Strange remote

Using the RX-V2095 with Klipsch KLF-20s on the front, KSC-C1 center, KSF-S5 rears and small Klipschs on the front effects. Toshiba SD-3109 DVD, Sony Minidisc, JVC VCR, RCA DTS and a Toshiba TP61H95 Television. I'm using optical where possible, S-video everywhere and component video from the DVD and the TV.

With 100W per channel and 100dBW efficiency on the Klipsch... sit-down or be knocked-down! This system will get very load. Will easily get to 110dB in my 15x20 room.

I love the Klipsch speakers for their clean, un-colored sound and searched for an amp to match. The combination is excellent. See my review on the Klipsch page for comments on the speakers. With these high-efficiency speakers, you need very, very low noise from your receiver or you'll be distracted with electronic hisses and pops.

The receiver is the center of the multimedia setup and easy to use. I've got the remote programmed to run everything and everyone in the family can use the system. They are finally used to adjusting the volume on the receiver, not the TV.

Sound quality is excellent, very low noise on straight (no DSP) feed. The DSP modes will color the source material a bit on the rear channels (at least to my ear)... so I limit the DSP modes to video. You'll pick up a bit of hiss on some of the DSP mode... but not all modes. Don't ask me why. For straigh audio, I typically switch to straight 2-channel. But, there's enough modes to satisfy anyone. (Does anyone really have a use for a echo-y church DSP mode???)

In summary, I researched Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, and Sony ES. I was able to listen to all of them and found the Yamaha provided the best match with the Klipsch. I know that these reviews all sound like we're justifying our expensive choices, but this receiver really is a fine piece of audio gear and certainly worthy of a listen.

(PS - this guy won out over the DSP-A1 cause I wanted the tuner and couldn't really see spending another $1000 to $1200 to get the A1 and a separate tuner)
