The HTR-5560 AV receiver puts high-end home theater well within the grasp of affordability, offering the convenience of DVD-Audio-ready six-channel analog inputs alongside the latest 6.1-channel surround processing and premium Yamaha sound technologies. When hooked up with the digital-audio output from a DVD-Video player or digital satellite receiver, the 75 watts-per-channel HTR-5560 handles 5.1-channel surround decoding for both major formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. In addition, the HTR-5560 also processes Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES, which create an even more expansive soundfield through the use of a center-rear surround channel, totaling six discrete full-range channels in addition to the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel: left, center, right, and left, center, and right surround. Non-Dolby Digital and DTS sources can benefit from surround processing, too--with enhanced directional steering over standard four-channel Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source--whether that's a TV broadcast, VHS tapes, or your favorite CDs, cassettes, and LPs. Pro Logic II delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels with 40 dB of left-right separation. A key benefit from a Yamaha receiver, of course, is Yamaha's proprietary signal processing, including Cinema DSP (digital soundfield processing), which creates aural "imaging" that not only makes your home sound like a theater, but also sounds better than most movie theaters. Based on a wealth of measured data in real studios and halls, Cinema DSP is designed to bring out the full potential of movie sound mixes, reproducing them the way directors and sound engineers intended. And, when you're listening to multichannel presentations late at night, you'll appreciate Silent Cinema, which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary 2-channel headphones (not included). Silent Cinema uses unique parameters for each soundfield to ensure accurate headphone representations of each soundfield. Then there's the six-channel DVD-Audio-ready inputs mentioned above. "If DVD-Audio is so high-tech," you might wonder, "why do I need analog inputs to appreciate it?" That's because, for reasons of data density, DVD-Audio players perform their own digital-to-analog conversion, passing high-resolution analog signals on to your amplifier. (And analog,

Strength:

Easy to use and setup, great sound, low price for the features included (can you say 6.1 WITH Pre Outs for less than $500)

Weakness:

None I have seen

Great reciever for a great price. After looking around at many reviews and brands of recviers I found the Yamaha had the best set of features for it's price (comprable ones cost about $200 more). I ordered it from onecall.com and haven't regretted it for a minute. Easy to use (read the manual and you are fine). Great sound and feature. Can't ask for more than that!

Strength:

Stunning sound reproduction, solid bass range, easily understood functions. It also has a nice clean, uncluttered look to it.

Weakness:

None that I have detected. All the carping in other reivews about the remote leave me baffled. I find it as easy to comprehend and use as most any other remote.

After much research on this site and elsewhere, I opted to purchase the 5560 to replace my Yamaha RX-V670, which has been a fine amp but does not reflect the latest technology. Though I've used the HTR-5560 for only a couple of weeks, my intial impressions are that it is an excellent value, obtained from J and R for the bargain price of $399, about $100 less than most everyone else is asking. The 5560 has a multitude of features (I probably haven't even discovered all of them yet) and coupled with the DVD player and subwoofer I purchased at the same time, has given my system an entirely new and astounding sound. Even without rear speakers, this amp produces remarkable soundfields for both audio and video components. I ran a couple of "test" CDs (favorite disks which I know have superior sound) through the stereo and Pro Logic II functions to check out the dynamics and was absolutely blown away. I have rarely heard such clear delineation on vocal/choral pieces, orchestral was staggering and organ works literally shook the room. The bass range on this amp seems far superior to my older Yamaha; overall, it seems to produce a much fuller, richer sound. To sum up: early evaluation leads me to heartily recommend this solid piece of equipment, which is a major bargain to boot.

Strength:

Very clean, natural sound. 6 channel support Prologic II, DTS-ES, Dolby Digital EX

Weakness:

Tuner setup

Excellent receiver with very clean and natural sound. Although I don't use the full power of it (the neighbours can't stand more than 1/2 power), its extremely natural sound makes it a best buy. I find the DSP features excellent (especially concert hall & 6 channel stereo). I don't find remote hard to use, in contrast I command my DVD player (Pioneer 444) and receiver very easily. I bought my receiver 2 weeks ago and set it up in 3 hours without too much reading the manual. But the manual is understandable and every single detail is stated in a good way. The only weakness is its radio setup, which is quite difficult, but once it is done, everything is fine...

Strength:

Sound quality, tons of features it would take years before this unit becomes obsolete.

This is my first Yamaha receiver. Wow, what an amazing piece of equipment! I''m very impressed with the quality of its sound reproduction. I have never experienced this level of clarity and richness in my music and home theater sound before. For the price (thank you shopsunshine.com!), I think this receiver is unbeatable. If you prefer to purchase from an authorized Yamaha dealer (shopsunhine.com clearly acknowledges on their web site that they do not adhere to Yamaha''s Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) and are not authorized to sell Yamaha products online; however, I was more than willing to take a risk), you may purchase this receiver from jandr.com for $429 (free shipping). This way, if something happens to your unit, you can avail of a warranty service with some peace of mind. I bought my JBL Studio series speakers from jandr.com and wished I have known this store a long time ago (I have wasted so much money already by purchasing items at or near MSRP at Best Buy!). I would buy from shopsunshine.com and jandr.com again. As for the receiver''s features, I like its 6-Channel Stereo capability, Dolby Pro Logic II, HDTV compatibility, A/B main speaker switch (I use different sets of main speakers for music and movie), and ample power (75 Watts/ch). I haven''t played enough with the different music and movie DSPs yet to be able to make any objective comment (some say they''re pretty "useless"? maybe not.). Now I enjoy re-visiting my favorite sounds of music -- Classical Piano, Carpenter, Billy Joel, Anne Murray, Barry White, Barbara Streisand, Jim Croce, and more. This Yamaha makes me feel good inside -- I highly recommend it to anyone.

Strength:

Great sound and tons of features that are easy to use given a week of non stop learning and tweaking but that comes with the teritory.

Weakness:

Remote

This receiver has a enough features to satisfy the audio beast. Great sound and performance. Could not ask for anything more for 399.00 6 channel unit that offers most of the latest audio formats. The manual is straight forward and will keep your interest. Don''t forget "RTFM" because if you don''t it will be an all day setup. The remote as always is filled with mutiple buttoms per centimeter so break out your tooth pick so you can select the correct one. "SOP" as far as the remote goes. Speakers are the JBL SCS135''s which are small but will kick your a$$ out the door when properly configured. Good times.

Yamaha has put together this beautiful 6.1 receiver that performs outstanding. I recently got this as an upgrade to 6.1 from my Sony 5.1. The Sony was 100 Watts by 5 and the Yamaha is 75 Watts by 6. This Yamaha sounds a lot better than the Sony. It has S-Video as well as Component Video switching which is great if you have only a couple of inputs on your TV. This receiver will decode the Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES formats as well as doing the matrix 6.1. Another good thing about this receiver is that it also has Pro Logic II. DVD-Audio sounds outstanding on this unit. I currently have this hooked up to my JBL Studio Series Speakers. This is my system: Speakers S-310 (fronts) S-36 (rears) S-Center PB12 (subwoofer) No Rear Center at this point Components Sony 5 Disc CD Sony VCR JVC XV-SA75GD DVD -Progressive Scan & DVD Audio Buying this receiver is the best thing that I could have done to my system. I recommend this receiver for anyone. It is an excellent performer and gives you a ton of bang for your buck.
