Strength:

ENOUGH POWER TO POWER A THEATER, EXCELLENT CRISP&CLEAR SOUND, GREAT PRICE! (and it's ice cold to the touch if you do the fan addon)

Weakness:

Don't like the remote, the buttons are too small, and text is hard to read, but it gets the job done. Don't like the fact that the dx-940 doesn't feature a coaxial digital in, also I'm not shure and out of close to 90 reviews, I haven't seen anyone mention the 48khz/96khz problem?( I may be wrong)

"Rear panel:

AM and FM antenna inputs: Thumb screws
Phono input: RCA jacks
Ground: Thumb screw
Digital inputs:
Toslink digital input with cover marked CD
Toslink digital input with cover marked DVD
Toslink digital input with cover marked TV
Note that the input must be set to digital to use any of these inputs. The tape monitor loop does not function when a digital input is chosen, and you cannot record a digital input through any of the analog outputs. The unit will normally automatically detect if a Dolby Digital, DTS or PCM signal is being input and decode it accordingly. If needed, DTS mode can be selected manually. THESE INPUTS WILL NOT ACCEPT 96 kHz sampling frequencies"
I didn't know that it didn't, could someone please email me and tell me me if it's the same for the dx-930, or did I misread it. my email adress is xdevilspyx@hotmail.com

(THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE DX-940)
I purchased the dx-940 two and a half months ago. I purchased it just when the 940 model came out, from best buy for $227(including tax). The reason I chose the dx940 over the dx930 is because I thought the heating issue would be fixed. When I first brought it home and hooked it up, I noticed that the fan didn't kick in until I put the sound to the 1-2oclock setting, I let it run for 10 minutes to see if it heats up as bad as the earlier reviewers said, and it did it was burning hot to the touch at the 9 oclcock position, so I followed the advice and added an extra cooling fan from an old computer power suply(attached it to the exsisting one in the back using twist ties) and used a universal power adapter to power it, plugged it in to the recievers power out so it would turn on when the reciever does, at 9.5 volts on the fan, the reciever was ice cold to the touch. With decent speakers I had from my old min 6 speaker sharp prologic system it sounded great. I later upgraded my rear speakers to JBL Music 2 package(which comes with 2 awesome satellites and a 100watt sub, got it for $134 including shipping from ubid.com) and HLS-620s for the front which are really excellent speakers (paid $114.00 for the pair + 38.58 shipping and it comes with a 5 year warranty includding shipping from ubid.com, all the speakers I bought from ubid were refurbished but came in perfect condition, with the exception of one .001mm hole in the grill) All i need now to finish off my speaker package is a cheap HLS center for around $50-$70.

Watching dvd's with this reciever is phenominal, the matrix rooftop bullet scene is the sweetest scene to show off your system, saving private ryan in dts was excellent, and many other movies just sound fantastic. Compared to models costing around 400 dollars and up that include dts, this is on par and in some cases better. This an excellent value and I'll recommend it to anyone in a heart beat.
My whole surround system including the speakers and the sub with the exception of the center channel only cost me a total of $513.58 ( Personally I think that is quite a lot of money, but an excellent deal for most people)

If anyone can confirm if the dolby digital and dts, is in 48khz or in 96 khz on this reciever, please email me at xdevilspyx@hotmail.com

**THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE TECHNICS SA-DX940********

I enjoy listening to quality sounding music which I got on the Marantz with my BIC Venturi Speakers, but the Marantz pretty much gave up the ghost, so I decided it was time to look for another receiver. I wanted an entry level receiver, but also wanted something with surround Sound. I spent about two to three weeks researching receivers and after visiting my local Best Buy, Good Guys, Circuit City and reviewing the reviews found on AudioReview.com, I narrowed my search down to the Kenwood 309, Pioneer 309 and the Technics 940. I was a little worried about the heat problem with the Technics, but other than that the reviews looked pretty good so I went for it!

After I got home with the 940 and immediately started hooking the thing up with a smile on my face until I heard the thing for the first time with my speakers and boy was disappointed. The 940 just didn't sound that great. Don't get me wrong, the receiver is a great bargin for $200, but it just wasn't good enough for me. I had the thing for about one week and never had any heat problems with it and it performed great with the exception of the sound quality I was looking for. I don't know how to explain it, but it just sounded like a tin can...cheap.

If you're looking for a great entry level receiver, this would be a great choice, but if you really want excellent sounding music, this might not be the one for you. Well, needless to say, I packed the 940 up and returned it to Best Buy and got back my $200 and immediately started shopping again. This time I decided to look at mid entry type receivers and finally narrowed it down to the Onkyo 575x and the Denon 1801. I went for the Denon which was about $300 more than the Technics, but man what a receiver. I'll be reviewing the Denon later. I never really gave the Technics much of a chance, never listened to it more than 30 minutes and never played any music on it..but I just know I wouldn't have been happy with it. I am giving the Technics 5 stars for value and 5 stars for overall rating as it appears to be a darn good system for the money...I just wanted something better.. If $200 is your limit, the 940 is a good bet but if you can pay $500, go for the Denon!

Strength:

Dolby Digital and DTS built in. Great sound with low distortion. Price.

Weakness:

Does get a little hot.

I've been in the audio business for about 12 years and I can say that I'm pretty impressed with this product. I don't consider myself an Audiophile or an expert on sound, But I can say that I've been doing this long enough to know what sounds okay and what sounds incredible. At the business where I work , we don't even sell Technics products and very few Panasonic products line our shelves. This reciever was actually given to me from a friend of mine who gave up on it. He told me that it would get very hot and then shut down. And then finally it just died. Normal stereo mode worked but everything else was gone. Basically no DD,DTS,DPL,or DSP. So I took it to one of our in store technicians and he actually found a blown fuse on the main circuit board. The technician then told me that he could probably fix the over-heating problem, and he did! He actually removed the original fan and installed one along with an in-line thermo-switch. So now when the reciever gets slightly warm the cooling fan kicks in. At first there was a noise problem that had to do with the fan but the tech fixed that also. So seven months later this reciever is still working like a champ. I've heard some great sounding recievers everything from just plain stereo to pro-logic to Dolby Digital and DTS and I would have to admit that this Technics unit puts out. I never thought that a low priced reciever packed with about a million options that you don't really need could perform so well. Now they could improve on a couple things. The tuner for one isn't that great. Could use 6 channel inputs. But other than that I would say other than the over-heating problem this reciever is worth trying out at least. I would have to give it a 4 star value rating and 3 stars overall just because of the reliability issue. TECHNICS IF YOU ARE READING THIS YOU NEED TO SOLVE THAT COOLING FAN ISSUE because if one of my technicians that gets paid half of what your engineers get paid can make your product more reliable then I think you need to hire different engineers. Now I'm not actually using this as my main home theatre piece but as a spare in another room. But I do frequently bring or obtain new pieces of equipment home to try on my system. This website is the best thing I've found since CD and I'm looking forward to submitting more reviews cause I do have quite a few.

Strength:

NOT TESTED YET

Weakness:

Tiny, useless remote.

This unit was given to me by my boss.
I am having trouble setting it up though.
The only time sound comes from the speakers is when I set the mode to "Stereo", as soon as I take it off "Stereo" and put it on "Surround" or any other setting, the sound cuts out and I hear nothing.
Is there an initial "Setup" or something that I failed to do?
Oh by the way, I didn't get the manual with it.
Also, I can hear a particular component on all component "settings", like if I am listening to my CD player, I can change the amp to TV, DVD, TAPE, CD, etc. and I can still hear it on all channels. Is this right?
Shouldn't I only be able to hear the CD player when the amp is set to CD??

Strength:

Sounds great

Weakness:

overheats, but not that much

All of you whining about this unit having 'blow' away the DTS, try pressing the 'Defeat' button for a couple of seconds, wait a couple of seconds and then press them again. Oops, all normal again.
And don't forget to read the manual for a change.

Strength:

Cheap as hell for what u get...DD, DTS...Excellent amt. of power to run a HT system...I actually like the remote...great technical support from retailer...

Weakness:

Poor technical support from Technics. Runs very hot. Problems with the volume circuitry -- Had to replace it after only a couple of months. Even though i like the remote, it seems to have a mind of its own...

If it wasn't for the price/performance ratio, I would of never of bought this receiver. period. dot. But due to costs, I decided to give it a shot. I purchased the receiver along with Energy Take 5 HT system (fronts, rears, center, 8" sub, 1 DTS DVD) total: $999.00 pretty decent price i thought...anyways, to make a long story short, the receiver volume circuitry burned out and the whole thing went kaputz...the retailer, the entertainment center in san angelo, tx was the best. excellent support from the beginning; unlike Technics themselves....worst customer service i've encountered. anyways, Technics said certain receivers shipped out to various regions of the states developed serious problems with the volume ctrl circuitry and they were in the process of diagnosing the problem. I received my new and improved receiver a couple months after it was sent to Technics and seems to work fine now (fingers crossed, rabbits foot in pocket, four leaf clover in notebook).
Lessons learned: 1. Don't buy an extended warranty. the reason i say that is because it seems like we're giving the manufactures the green light to use consumers as beta-testers for third-rate-products while at the same time taking away our hard earned dollar.
2. Buying from a reputable dealer should help allivate problems that might arise from crappy merchadises.
3. live and learn; sometimes spending a little more cash makes all the difference...
yours truly,
-b

Mine crapped out yesterday. After looking online and reading all the others that had their TEK run hot and then die, I am disgusted. There are other units out there now that are so much more reliable. Mine ran hot, mine died. Mine sucks too

Weakness:

Doesen't play dts track on "Hell freezes over"

The binding posts on mine have removable plastic plugs for the banana plugs. A pair of longnose pliers will get them out I think that it sounds better if left turned on (I leave it on all weekend)

Strength:

You cannot beat this receiver for the price. Every feature you need for killer home theatre and great sounds.

Weakness:

Runs hot but it has a nice fan built on it. Also technics remotes are cheesy.

For the price you cannot beat this receiver. As a matter of fact it takes another couple hundred dollars to compete with it. Your getting dolby digital and DTS and 500 watts which is incredible. Also the sound DSP's make any audio Cd sound great. Simulated surrounds is a great feature coming from mono sources. When turned up loud it's competitors were getting slight hisses the technics expierences not such things at loud volumes. Definatley a great by for the money.
