Strength:

Great sound quality and power for the money.
Very Clear Sound.

Weakness:

I try to connet a preamp to this receiver but can't.
This unit not have in or output to connect a preamp.

I read like 36 opinions after doing mine. So i think that is
a good receiver for the prices and for the features (dtc, ect
it have 100x5 channels.I used my Technics receiver for some 1 years i dont have no problem.
People, buy the fan and quit complaining!!! For about 15-20 bucks at Radio Shack or any other electronic/computer parts supplier you can buy a 3" fan. The mounting screws match with the existing fan, just stack it right on top of the old fan, or put it on the top of the receiver, reinsert the mounting screws, make your electrical connection, plug it in to the back of the receiver and the problem is solved in about 15 minutes! And give it space to breath. If you got this problem because i live on a very hot country and i dont have that problem.

I like this unit very much.

Thanks!!!!

I purchased this receiver at a end of the year sale at good guys. It was only 149 so I bought it, I did not test it and I was expecting to sound cheap. But when I hooked everything up it did not sound cheap, acutally it sound pretty good. It was worth the price, and I have been using it since last X-mas, has had no problems. I recommend buying this reciever.

Strength:

user friendly, good price, dts and dolby digital, three digital inputs, strong amp.

Weakness:

small binding clips.

at first i wanted to buy harmon kardon but it was too expensive for me at the time, however i'm very pleased with the performance of this reciever.

when you use this for prolonged periods of time it gets so hot you can fry an egg on it but i plan to buy another fan for it.

some advice for all those buying recievers. avoid sony, there to expensive and not as good as technics. if you can afford to buy a sony, buy a harmon kardon.

if you have any questions regardig this reciever e-mail me at

Classic SA-DX9x0 Burn out

Well, I like my receiver, but like many others here, I am planning on adding a better fan. I had the now-infamous and well-known (to Technics as well, I'm sure) fuse burn-out that left all Surround functions dead. When I took my receiver in for repair (luckily it was under warranty and there is an authorized Technics factory nearby) there was another fella ahead of me in line, same receiver, same problem! So of course Technics knows about this. It's very VERY common with this unit. If they tell you they've never heard of it, the rep is probably towing the company line (and lying through his teeth.) The reps at the shop were very nice, but of course they're not going to admit to a faulty product. Overall, I like the unit, but you have to keep it cool (which I admit shouldn't be YOUR responsility; you paid for a working product!) Seems like Technics should be fixing units with this problem for free, since it is obviously a design flaw (again, not that they'll admit to it.) The on-again-off-again fan is a definite mistake; wonder what genius thought that one up?

Strength:

Sounded like it had all features I wanted at a reasonable price.

Weakness:

Died on me after a few months.

Same problem as others have documented: casual use for some months, and then strange behavior (certain things audible whatever button is pushed, others not at all, distorted sounds, no optical connection,...). I personally hadn't noticed the overheating, but I guess that's what must have happened. I've gone back to my medieval old Technics SU-500 receiver (even without remote control!) Can they really get away with this? If it is so widely documented, can't they be forced to do a recall?

Strength:

Great as a heat source or paperweight

Weakness:

Died in six hours, no s-video, pathetic remote

This is undoubtabley the single worst designed peice of junk I have ever seen anywhere. I bought this thing two days ago at Best Buy for 119. It was an older floor display, and was probably an older model, but for the price it seemed like a great buy, and the outward build quality seemed outstanding for the money. Well, after I got the thing home and began playing audio CDs for around three hours in stereo mode. through my 6-ohm Yamaha speakers the unit suddenly flashed OVERLOAD across the display and attempted to shut down.

This fan idea of Technics' is a joke, too. I mean it is a well known fact that small, cheap cooling fans are among the worst made products in the world. Mine was entireley seized, and as a result, the unit got so hot that the paint on the top cover has the texture of an orange peel. The fan attemped to work on mine, but never came on in stereo mode, which is the only place it lasted long enough to stay.

I intend to return this thing tomorrow, and break my near-lifetime faith in the Panasonic/Technics name.

Strength:

Great sound. DTS is excellent. Teamed with Cambridge Soundworks Movieworks 308 makes an excellent package for watching DVD's at a super price.

Weakness:

Has preformed flawlessly in about a full year of operation.

This unit has performed flawlessly. Have had people with much more expensive systems buy this one for a second system for the basement, master bedroom, etc. Sounds like a lot more money than it is. Have no idea about all the complaints with overheating. I keep it on the top shelf in a large entertainment armoire above a 36" TV. Nothing sits on top of the unit and I have had no heating problems even with the doors to the unit closed. I wouldn't recommend stacking anything on top of any unit in this power range. This goes down as one of my better purchases -- and I am a guy known for making good purchases -- friends always call me before making any technical purchase.
Buy one and play Apollo 13 or Saving Private Ryan in DTS. Mind blowing. Highly recommend the Cambridge Soundworks 308's as well.

Strength:

Great sound, very affordable

Weakness:

Run way too hot, burns out after several months

First, DON"T BUY THIS RECEIVER.

It has a design flaw that causes it to run very hot and burn out in a few months. Having it serviced will not fix the cause of the problem.

Second, if you already have it and it burned out or you want to prevent it from overheating all the time, then please check my web site for some notes and a detailed description of how to safely modify it so that the fan stays on.

Strength:

Has digital inputs and digital sound and dts compatibility,
wanted something to use with my dvd that had the digital inputs

Weakness:

Keeps dying on me, had since March 2000 and is now in the shop for a second time to get repaired, this time is under 30 days since last being fixed.

Have had nothing but problems trying to keep this thing working. I like the sound and for surround sound on the vcr and dvd its not the best but works well. Thing is it
keeps burning up on me last time was in shop for almost 3 weeks waiting on parts to replace a pcb and now its back at shop to get repaired again, still waiting on word. I have it in a stereo cabinet that I custom made for myself but the receiver slot has 2 cooling fans that are 4 inch to keep air flow going out the back. There is 2 inches on the sides and top to allow air flow. Kinda wish I had known about the over heating problem before I spent my money, would of gotten a new yamaha instead.

Strength:

The sound is very clear, it HAS A LOT of POWER REALLY!
you really has to put this baby to his limits and your ears will begin to explode, IT HAS the power and the quality for it.

Weakness:

number one, HEAT, second, HISS on Surround Mode IS NOTICEABLY if you turn up the volume a little, and remote control is not cool.

Well, for the money you paid you can't ask for more!
It has a few problems I Know it! but, what da hell :-)

the only REAL problem with this baby is the Heat.

SIMPLE, I was not convinced after putting the fan behind the factory fan, so I added 2 extra fans on top of the ventilation holes in the top of the receiver.

ok, the fan from behind is blowing air OUT of the receiver.
and the 2 on the TOP, just over the ventilation holes are throwing air IN, and that's it.

now the Receiver is more fresh than my refrigerator.
So, to the people out there complaining, either you sell/trade this receiver of put this 3 little fans and that's it, and STOP complaining, complains should go directly to Panasonic/Technics.
Just a poing on this, it is good to say, well heat problems, but it is not good saying "it's all crap"
ok.
Keep it positive!
This Receiver Rocks!
I give it 4 stars in overall for the heat problem and nothing less.
