Strength:

Sounds very nice, relatively cheap, pretty decent controls.

Weakness:

A little bit of hiss but it's virtually unnoticable at normal use levels.

I'm very happy with this unit for the price. It sounds pretty nice, does what I want it to. DTS and dolby digital work great, stereo is nice. It runs warm but I have had absolutely no problems with heat, it radiates just fine, I have two, one for nearly 8 months and the other for about two and they both work fine. The DSP modes are useless but it's always better to listen to music in stereo anyway. Overall great value. Just don't set anything on top of it.

Strength:

A Lot of bang for the buck!!!

Weakness:

Internal frequency cutoff set at 100HZ

This is my third Technics receiver in the last 12 years. I have been very happy with all three. I have never had a single problem with any of them. My last purchase 4 years ago, the SAEX700, got very hot too just like the newer digital models, the 930,940. It has hundreds and hundreds of hours on it from watching movies but it continues to operate flawlessly as I moved it to an extra room to make way for the new digital receiver. Obviously for those of you that had them burn out fairly quickly you are not happy campers. And if mine burns out I will not be happy either!
But my older one is still cranking along in spite of the heat it generates. But for the buck the 930/940 has outstanding power and features.

My only complaint is the internal cutoff that can be set at 100/150/or 200 hz. To compliment my other speakers and my Klipsh ksw 15 sub I would like to be able to set it around 65hz. Does anyone know if there is a way to get around this manufacturers internal limit of 100hz on the bottom end?????Please e-mail me if you do.

I got this for 180 buckaroos at auction. As long as it keeps going like my older models I think it is a lot of bang for the buck. All the power you will need!

value = 5
overall = 4 because of frequency cutoff.

Thanks

Strength:

Lots of nice features DTS decoder built in ect.

Weakness:

Tacky, wierd remote control

Overall for the price this is a very good reciver, digital sound output is great. However I would recommend you use a subwoofer with this reciver as the bass is very weak even with large speakers.

As far as overheating I've had no problems, but then again I used my brains and left around 4inches of ventilation around the top of the unit.

This is a good unit and for the price you'll be pushed to find anything better.

People, buy the fan and quit complaining!!! For about 15-20 bucks at Radio Shack or any other electronic/computer parts supplier you can buy a 3" fan. The mounting screws match with the existing fan, just stack it right on top of the old fan, reinsert the mounting screws, make your electrical connection, plug it in to the back of the receiver and the problem is solved in about 15 minutes!!!
NO MORE WHINING,PLEASE!!!!!

Awesome Sound

Weakness:

remote, and that the dts sound is downconverted from 96khz to 48khz.

to the reviewr below(SirKnight)
Your idea is correct, but you should not unplug the original fan, because once your at the 9 oclock position and above, every time there is a loud sound effect during the movie, it will try to turn the fan on, and if there is no fan plugged in, it will cut off the sound and say overload on the system. Just take a 3" fan and use twist ties to attach it to the existing fan, and get any universal 3-12 volt variable adapter and connect it to to the wires on the 3" fan, then take a dollar store extension cord, plug it in into the outlet on the reciever, and plug in the universal adapter into the extension cord, and select the voltoge you want the fan to run at. I run mine at 9 volts at 300ma. This method is alot simpler since you don't even have to unscrew and take the cover off the receiver.

Inexpensive with DTS

Weakness:

Runs Extremely Hot...(see below)

I read the reviews here before I bought this thing.
I should have thought a little harder before I threw down $300. This unit gets SO HOT that you can just about burn your hand on the top of it. I used it flawlessly for 6 months. Then, in the middle of listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter sing "I Feel Lucky" it died. Stereo sound worked but only at high volume. DD5.1 and DTS were gone altogether.

I can't believe that after all of the problems this model has had, as written about here, that Panasonic never issued some type of recall or voluntarily extended everyone's warranty for another 12 months.

Well, I'm still waiting to hear from the repair tech about the shape it's in and how long it will be, so I'm back to dinky stereo TV speakers for at least 7-10 days. This after I just bought a DVD player...some luck.

Do not buy this unit. You've been amply warned.

Strength:

Very Clear Sound and great surround capabilities

Weakness:

Remote isn't convenient to use

I have been using this receiver since fall, 1999 and it still sounds great. I noticed it seemed to run hot and concluded that I did not have enough space above my receiver so enlarged it to around 4 inches. The result is a cooler running piece of equipment and no complaints. I don't know if everyone complaining about the heat piles equipment and/or magazines, etc on top of the receiver, but even cooler running equipment needs room to breath!

Function

Thought I was getting a good deal at $300 from the Navy Exchange on this product. I put a lot of trust in the Panasonic/Technics name, emphasizing that "put" is in the past tense. I read the other reviews on this site and noticed that overheating and self-destruction was a characteristic of this product, which by the way, I experienced myself. I notified by email and subsequently called the Panasonic technical support staff to query whether or not there was a recall on the product, but lo and behold there was not. They not only would not back their product but could neither give me a point of contact for a service center because of my location (Puerto Rico). I reckon this is piss-poor support for a large corporation and Panasonic and all of its little offspring can eat *&^%! and bark at the moon. The SA-DX930 is a piece of junk and so is the company that continues to push it.
