Strength:

Strong power supply, and strong amplification section.

Weakness:

The remote (like most products now days) sucks.. The Damping Factor of the amp, it could be better, but if you run a subwoofer, there shouldn't be any concern.. This amp puts out clean sound.

This reciever has NEVER given me any problems with heat, yes it gets hot, but when you cram 500 watts into a small enclosure this will happen. I bought this reciever from Circuit City, and purchased the four year extended warranty - never had to use it. I have the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DVD and the DTS version kicks butt! Maybe the last guy doesn't have a DVD player that sends DTS data. Anyway, if you can find these receivers anywhere the only advice I can give is to buy it, and just make sure you don't stack anything on top of it! This goes for ANY Amp/Receiver. I don't know how many times I have walked into a friends house and seen this.. There are vents there for a reason - when you cover them, it defeats the purpose of them being there. The last system I had was an OLD Pioneer rack system, and the amp in that thing got pretty damn hot too.. I think that the only thing Technics did wrong was to assume people would read the part of the manual that says do not stack things on top of this receiver - but thats my opinion.
If you open up this receiver, you will find a VERY strong power supply (if you know what you are looking at). Two 8500 microfarad caps, and two 3800 microfarad caps (One pair for the High current side of the amp, and one pair for the low current side of the amp - hence H+ technology). Most receivers skimp on this part - except for Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, and Yamaha. Overall I think that this receiver is a fine value, with good quality.

**************940 Review Only***************
I've read all of the reviews on the 930 and was blown away
If I had known there was such a heat/defect issue, etc.
from the 930, I would never have bought the 940.
I have been running this for 6 months now
and have had NO problems-I just recently installed
the extra 12V fan to the rear after reading the various horror stories described here. It has never
gotten near the range of high heat temps that some
of the reviewers have described.
Has the DTS module/fuse defect been corrected? I would very much like to hear some feedback on this point.
I am sure as hell the heat sink problem has anyway...at least on my 940...
What I want to know is why have some people who have been using this for over a year experienced NO problems?
I would like to say that I agree with some of the reviewers opinions stating that an addition to the cooling fan is inexusible. Shame on Technics for this flaw.

Weakness:

digital recording is flat and sterile-sounding

Good receiver with dds and dd5.1

Good Dolby Digital/DTS receiver for the price, and you get what you pay for.
Ideal for my little sister. I'll bring her tomorrow.

I was apprehensive about going with Tehchnics but for the price ($349.00), I felt that it offered the most with Dolby Digital and DTS built in. I must say, it is very impressive, the overall surround distribution is phenominal and it literally does bring a DVD or a regular video alive. I was a little disappointed with the bass. Oh well, that's nothing a powered sub can't fix. Overall, I think it's a great reciever.

First, let's get the negatives out. My receiver came with two major defects: the subwoofer channel and the cooling fan did not work. I had to send it back for a replacement. The case top got really hot without the cooling fan.
Now the good news. First, the price. I mail-ordered for $287 from Graffiti (202-296-8412). This is probably the best value for 500W DD Receivers available today. The sound is clean (only slightly more noise in surround mode than in stereo mode). There is plenty of low frequency power to drive my 15" sub. Very good FM reception, and very decent features and controls.

The value is 5, performance is 4, but my out of box experience is 2.

I am impressed with the sound quality from this receiver. The Dolbydigital surround sounds excellent. My center and surround speakers
are inexpensive bookshelf type and sound amazing. I like the lack of
a clock on the display of this receiver. 2 optical/ 1 coaxial digital
input, no video switching. Receiver does get quite warm when running,
built in cooling fan switches on automatically with a thermostat.
For a basic Dolby digital receiver I rate it an excellent value. The
DSS Dolby Digital sound will blow you away. Same with DVD. A low cost
surround system with this receiver will not disappoint you.

I just ordered this receiver via www.ezbid.com auction. This is an auctionhouse; you are NOT buying from other individuals. Anyway, I got it new for $219 + $7.49 shipping/handling. This is the second time they have had this item.
Obviously, I cannot give you a review now, but I'm sure buyers wanted to know this!

Ignore the rating below; I was forced to make it.

Just bought this from Sears for $349. I returned a Yamaha RV 703 bcos it had just 20 W on the rear channels (80 W on front and center) and no dolby digital. Brought this Technics home (it promised AC3 and DTS), hooked it up, and no center speaker sound. Triple checked all connections, looks like the output for center is not working.
Sound clarity is no where near Yamaha, I was getting better sound with three speakers (same speakers: Cerwin Vega E26F front, Technics S80 center and rear, nothing fancy) than I got with five (oops four) speakers here.

To be fair, I did not play a DVD, merely played a Dolby Surround encoded video tape, but I had watched the same tape yesterday on my Yamaha, and the difference was clear.

Listen to it v carefully in the store, and definitely compare it to Onkyo TX-DS474. For the same price, you will get much better quality of sound (no DTS but doesn't matter).

I recently bought the 930 based on price and features (Dolby Digital inparticular). I, too, had the same problem a previous poster had with the
fan doa and the case getting hot. Sound and features were satifactory, but
I have lost faith in Technics/Panasonic quality. Am returning today for a
Yamaha. Sounds like a case of you get what you pay for. Technics: I hope you
are paying attention.
