Strength:

Even Power to all speakers, optical in/out, plenty of sound fields, good speaker connectors, simple setup features.

Weakness:

Heats up, low sound quality, static occurs when volume or balance is being adjusted, no gold plated a/v in/out except on front

Not a bad rig unless you paid more than $400.00, I have had no major problems yet. It does heat up fast so i keep stuff away from the vents to help cool it better. The volume knob in a word sucks because everytime I adjust it it makes this crakling sound, I keep the volume at average listening levels to avoid using it. It still is way better then my previous unit (STR-DE 705) which cost the same a year earlier. I bought it while on vacation because it was $1200cdn in Canada at the Sony store, and I got it for $399.99us on an open box special at circuit city which after exchange works out to half price.

I upgraded because I wanted larger speaker inputs as well as optical in/out, and of course more power and balence. My STR-DE705 had (120x3) plus (50x2)Rear for a total of 460watts. My STR-DE915 has 100x5 watts which was better for my rear speakers because before I could hardly hear them with the front ones getting more that double the power.

In conclusion it is a very good unit if you can keep it cool and don't mind the volume control problem. I recommend getting more sensitive speakers for this unit so she doesn't fry on you.

Strength:

It's a good receiver, I've been happy owning it. Overall good performance.

Weakness:

Reliability seems to be an issue. At 2.5 years old, it lost the rear amplifier. At about 3 years old, it lost the front right/left amplifier. Now the rear amplifier has gone out again. I called Sony and they agreed to give me the discounted flat repair rate as a break. Nice people, but I am sick of seeing them, know what I mean?

Anyone else having this kind of problem? Is it a model issue or related to some external factor? I've got decent cables and speakers of the correct impedance and wattage.

Looking at the reviews posted this far, I am glad I have the New Zealand Model of this reciever. Mine is rated at 100w x 5, not 100w x 4, and I believe this rating is true. The amp gives out a great depth of sound, better than a power amp I have that has been bench tested at 115wrms. While the sound fields do seem a little gimiky, some of them do improve the sound of the material, It just depends on what it is.
I have not noticed any of the noise present that some of the other reviewers claim to hear, nor any audible distortion until well above normal listening levels, as one reviewer commented, it depends on the quality of your speakers.

Having had a problem with another Sony product, I found Sony NZ very friendly to deal with, fixing the problem quicker than estimated.

Having run a NAD 316, Sony STRDE515, and Many! high quality power amps with this system, I feel the 915 gives an excellent output, good clarity & warmth (normally lacking in Japanese componentry), add the benefit of Dolby Digital, and this receiver makes excellent value for money.

Purchase price was $999 (NZ$)

HOW CAN I BREAK MY RECEIVER? Basically posting this to get an answer to my question so please e-mail me ashegam@hotmail.com
Now about this reciver. The remote broke down on me after about 1 month. cost was $120.00 but was covered by my 4 year plan I had. I hear all these problems with this receiver so I want to get a new one before it breaks down and because 110 x 5 is a lie. This thing can't pump more then 10 watts. My desktop computer speaker sounds much better with it's built in 2w of power. Any how the thing is if my reciver breaks down 3 times I'll get a new one. So how can I break this puppy? and please no moral lectures cause you don't know what I've gone through with this receiver and how I was suckered into buying the wrong item.

Strength:

Plenty of power and inputs.

Weakness:

It blows up if you use it past the end of your warranty.

I had the same problem everyone else had. After about a year and a half, the rear amp quit. Then the protector circuit would kick in, and finally about a month later the front amp was fried. Now i have to decide whether to waste money to get it fixed and sell it on ebay or just chuck it in the dumpster. Sony really put one over on me with the high number of features for such a low cost. Now I will never buy a Sony again.

Reliability

I bought this unit on impulse. I don't regret that as it started me into the home theater experience. I have since added a good dvd player and full HT speaker setup. If I could do it again I would go with everything I have except this receiver. It's in the shop with the rear chanel problem and I have to rely on a service centre that doesn't keep me informed. I talked to a Sony rep who claims not to be aware of the problem. Either he doesn't bother checking on his products reliability records prior to responding to an inquiry or many of these posts aren't factual. I won't be buying another sony unless I am impressed with the service and this receiver somehow becomes reliable while it is still under warranty.

- With lots of unused inputs on my STR-DE915, I was disappointed to discover that I can not have an optical input for both the laserdisc player and DVD player. There may be three optical inputs, but only one works with a video source.- The settings do not switch with the source, so when I change from video to FM, I have to rotate through settings as well.
- The FM receiver needs to be more sensitive, for my area.
