I bought the STR-DE915 about 1 year ago for around $300 bucks, with the rca dvd player and Infinity speakers, with powered sub woofers,i have to say, it is the best receiver for the money, using monster cables and svideo outputs and optical outputs, this thing works perfectly, runs a little hot, but is to be expected, try watching Twister on the DVD and you will see what i mean, if you use dynamic rang comp, set at max, and volume around one third, you will feel the bass rattle your bones!!! any more and the windows will begin to rattle!sorry for those of you with all the problems, maybe i just got lucky for now, hope it keeps up the great sound, then again, my full set of Infinity's may have alot to do with it, the powered towers run around $500 a piece, the rear rs-2's about 4300 a pair, but the huge center channel was free! i will buy sony again, as long as you buy digital, all the hype about dts is bull! You will hear all that with this receiver, believe me!

I've had the unit for 2 years plus and it serves me well. I have not had any problems or issues so far. After reading the reviews herein my fingers are crossed though. I have noticed it does run very warm. The remote is busy but runs all of my systems units. I also have a Russound Pro-6 speaker switch with 4 channels being used to support 4 pairs of seperate speakers throughout my house. I've had all 4 channels cranking for parties and sporting events without so much as a hint of failure.
I am very pleased with it's DVD audio playback. I have Bose 401s as the main speakers, CSW center, Boston Acoustic VSR dipole rears and a Infinty BU-80 sub. Quite a mix but it sounds great. The regular Pro-Logic surround seems to be missing something though. Regular tweeking of the speaker levels is required to work the sound to my liking.

I am thinking of upgrading some of my system and have been looking at receivers. I will stay with Sony. Most likely something in the ES series.

Strength:

Even Power to all speakers, optical in/out, plenty of sound fields, good speaker connectors, simple setup features.

Weakness:

Heats up, low sound quality, static occurs when volume or balance is being adjusted, no gold plated a/v in/out except on front

Not a bad rig unless you paid more than $400.00, I have had no major problems yet. It does heat up fast so i keep stuff away from the vents to help cool it better. The volume knob in a word sucks because everytime I adjust it it makes this crakling sound, I keep the volume at average listening levels to avoid using it. It still is way better then my previous unit (STR-DE 705) which cost the same a year earlier. I bought it while on vacation because it was $1200cdn in Canada at the Sony store, and I got it for $399.99us on an open box special at circuit city which after exchange works out to half price.

I upgraded because I wanted larger speaker inputs as well as optical in/out, and of course more power and balence. My STR-DE705 had (120x3) plus (50x2)Rear for a total of 460watts. My STR-DE915 has 100x5 watts which was better for my rear speakers because before I could hardly hear them with the front ones getting more that double the power.

In conclusion it is a very good unit if you can keep it cool and don't mind the volume control problem. I recommend getting more sensitive speakers for this unit so she doesn't fry on you.
