Strength:

Power Design Configuration options Blue-light

Weakness:

There is no clock on the receiver!

To describe this machine in 1 word "WOW!" fits the best!! I have read the reviews on this site, and that was the reason i bought this amp (it looks great in silver!). I can only confirm the reviews, it is a great amp. What i think is cool, is the blue light if DD or DTS is used!! Well, thanks for all the reviews here, it made the choice easy! Marcel.

Looks average. Plastic feel! Very expensive in New Zealand.I feel ripped off when I see it can be purchased for under $US200 elsewhere.

Strength:

Excellent value for money. Has all the mod con's - DD, DTS many inputs to keep me occupied, reliable, excelent DSP modes to choose from, stylish, overall pretty damm good

Weakness:

Could have another optical input, could have increased RMS wattage (but that desn't really bother me)

Well I bought this a little time ago and I only had a strict budget (Uni student...hello!). I wanted something that could give me excellecnt sound, all the modern processing techniques, enough power for my bedroom and that looked stylish in the cabinet. This was my choice because not only was it very cheap, It suited my low budget ($500 AUS or approx $250 US) and provided excellent sound processing with the new high powered satellite speaker system (also from Sony). Only a few draw backs - one would be only one digital input and not being able to alter the dB frequency slopes (but I suppose that's getting into the more exspensive side of receivers).

Overall a great receiver if your a home entertainment enthusiast but can't quite afford the ultimate set up yet.

Strength:

Dolby Digital and dts decoding. Digital Cinema sound modes. Adequate remote.

Weakness:

No S-Video. A bit of learning curve to fully understand menus.

I realized that I needed to upgrade in order to experience the full "DVD experience" and I intended to do it on a low budget. My old Kenwood is still very powerful and belts out the music with no problems (except a little distortion) so I decided that I would get something to play movies only, and use both receivers - one for movies, one for music. In other words, I wanted dts and Dolby Digital decoding but I was very reluctant to give up my Kenwood (sometimes it's hard to let go).

I did extensive research in order to figure out exactly what I needed to achieve this. My research pointed me in the direction of the Sony STR-DE475 every time. And I have never been a fan of Sony. I'm not sure why, I guess I have always known that there are better products out there (for more money of course). Well, Sony must be doing things right these days because I love this receiver. I know people are going to start bashing this receiver on this site soon enough, but for $200, there is NO equal! I was extremely skeptical of the 80 watts at first but now that is no longer the case. If I were to do it again, I might buy the 575 just because it has S-Video and 100 watts, but oh well, this suits me fine for now. I previously read some reviews of this product on another website and several consumers complained of a hissing sound, especially at low volume levels. I have never experienced such a thing with this receiver. Maybe they have poor cables hooked up to their's.

I have old Kenwood tower speakers in front (soon to be replaced with JBL's), the JBL N-Center channel, Bose bookshelf speakers for surrounds, and the Sony SAWM40 subwoofer. With this setup, I finally realized that my Kenwood's days have come to an end. The Sony STR-DE475 is all I need for movies AND music.

Great Surround for Price

Weakness:

limited sound fileds ( but of good quality )

Great receiver. my first digital receiver ever. I have upgraded to the 875 for the matrix, sound fields, and price. I got a 875 for $267. However, if you need a quick slution for cheap, this is the unit. I would not hesitate to buy another if it were a must situation. If you have the extra dough, go with the 875 or 1075

Weakness:

none so far

i picked this baby up at best buy for 199. got a free 30 dollar gift card with it too. so you can kinda think i got it for 169 in a way.

ive only used it for a few hours tonite but so far, its a really good reciever. i have a pair of SSM-F500H speakers. the speakers are also sony, in case you didnt know.

one thing i noticed cool about the reciever is it tells you what kHZ its decoding at when your using the digital optical cable. earlier i was playing tony hawk 3 for playstation2, and it was decoding at 48khz. it sounds really dam good.

when i heard the THX thru terminator 2 with the volume only at 33% or so, i already has goosebumps.

bottom line...this reciever is a really great deal. its not feature packed but its got the basics for great home theatre.

FANTASTIC!!!!

Weakness:

GO AWAY weakness man!

I have already written a review on the 475 but I have just been watching Moulin Rouge on DVD and I know use this movie as reference material to show off to people the 475. I'm in Australia and we got the DVD version with a DTS soundtrack. The 475 just blew me away because it is probably one of the best DTS soundtracks out (along with Gladiator). The 475 completly shone through this movie providing extreme bass during strong musical sections of the movie and positive power to all channels providing the most immersing movie experience ever.

Once again I must stress this is one of the best receivers I have ever heard in this pric range. I connected my dad's receiver to my system to make a comparison with Moulin Rouge and Gladiator (mainly using DTS). He own's the Sony strdb940 receiver which contains many ES components that sony put in their high end receivers. the db940 cost about 750 - 800 bucks(US) and when making the comparison, the 475 shone just as well as the db940 - only noteable difference was the amount of power from the db940 (which is irrelevant).

In conclusion a fantastic receiver for a fraction of the price. Does just as well as the higher sony models and there are plenty of high positives to this receiver - especially if you don't want to spend your life savings!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO BASS BOOST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello!

i bought last year, in a promotion, an str de 345 (the one whitout dd or dts); after I read more, I made an up-grade to str 445 which I consider it excellent! This month I visited some friends in Germany where the prices for such receivers are strongly folling down and I bought an str 475; it looked excellent! using it with my MF 515 front and CR/CN 190 sorround I have found this 475 does not sound simmilar as the 445. I was dissapointed because it has not bass boost (at 445 exists, +4db). 475 has only +/- 6 db in 2 db steps; those +4db gives much because are at a lower frequency, 60 Hz I remember.

80 W are sufficient for a room; of course, the number of db of the boxes is very important (the mare they deliver, the better fils the room with the sound).
