Strength:

Awsome product, all that I can say , Strong for 65 watts, has all the features that I need

Weakness:

None that I can see yet

I had been looking to upgrade my AV System from an old Pro Logic Denon , to the new Dolby Digital. I have been researching this for some time. I liked the Denon 2802, but no local stores had any here. Then I found the Marantz 7200 for $725.00 locally. Opened it , hooked it up, played it. Just plain sucks. Hard to setup, Remote is terrible. Music is harsh. Then I ordered the Outlaw 1050, after much consideration, for $ 499.00 , what a deal. Easy to set up, easy remote, and it sounds Fantastic. Played Independance Day, first time , sounds like I am in the Movies. I am looking foward to more great products from this new Company. But for now, I am truly amazed at the quality of this fine AV receiver.

Strength:

Smooth sound, fabulous service department, great on music too, a steal at this price.

Weakness:

None

I started out the budget route, but soon grew tired of the shrill sound from my cheap speakers. Catching the "bug", I soon upgraded everything except my 1050. I bought Joseph Audio rm25 speakers ($3500), a Pioneer elite dv09 ($1900), and a Sunfire Grand Sig amp($3500)

When I bought the Sunfire amp, I had planned to also replace my 1050 with a Sunfire Theater Grand2 preamp, but had run out of money. Good thing! Because my 1050 sounded just fine with all of my upscaled equipment. Now I'm sure the Sunfire preamp would be an improvement, but damned if I can tell! Certainly not worth the $3000 price difference.

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you didn't know the price tag on the 1050, you'd guess it would cost at least $1500. It plays so effortlessly.

Strength:

6.1 is nice but my room provides difficulty in locating the rear, center, surround. I just don't have the room for it. Sounds as good as the typical mainstream products (Teac, Onkyo, Dennon, Yamaha).

Weakness:

Never realized it was made in Malaysia. 50% of Malasians HATE America - why do we continue to keep them employed? Remote just plain stinks. Light hum out of the RRS. Looks (if it's a big deal), not as clean as some other offerings from competitors.

I'd keep looking before buying another one. Not a bad attempt. Mislead to believe American made - NOT!

Strength:

Awesome sound. I was impressed with the build quality..and it's heft. It's a hefty bugger for sure. Simple to set up and amazing output for the money. No better deal going!

Weakness:

I hate the big green power button!

I've read many of the reviews listed here prior to making the decision to try out the Outlaw 1050. I, too, had made an exhaustive search for a good quality, high performance receiver. I've been pleased with Carver's products over the years and had narrowed my search down to Carver's new offing , the C1000, Onyko TX-DS898, and Denon 4802. Then I saw these reviews and had to find out just how great a deal the folks here claimed it was. I figured Outlaw's money back deal with try out was a plausible opportunity to try it and compare.
I actually bought it back in early October, but had to wait until my home theater was almost completed with the speakers wired in to hook it up. As it turned out, the try out period was long gone before I ever took it out of the box. I thought I might have to eat a $500 mistake.
That thought no longer is a valid concern. The 1050 has impressed me at every listening opportunity. I found on the six speaker setting, I have to crank up the power due to the fact I've got two rear speakers instead of one. So the 1050 is actually driving seven speakers, albeit very efficient ones, it's still seven 200+W speakers. Although I really need more power (which I'll get by patching the front mains through the sub amplifier), it leaves me really pleased with myself I trusted this group's recommendation. Thanks to all those who took the time to brag! I'm tickled pink.

My set-up:
Outlaw 1050 AV receiver
Infocus LP530 front LCD projector
Toshiba HDTV DST3000 satellite receiver
Toshiba SD4700 DVD player
Monster Cable HST2500 line conditioner
Klipsch RF-5 II mains
Klipsch RC-3 II center
Klipsch RCW-5 II surrounds
Klipsch RS-3 II rears
Klipsch KSW-15 subwoofer
Monster Cable interconnects and speaker cabling

Strength:

built quality, sound, great customer service (thanks Scott)

Weakness:

weak in music

before coming to California, I used to own a couple of high end equipment.....Lexicon Processor, White Audio Lab mono block amps, Audiomeca CD transport, Audio Alchemy DA converter and anti-jitter to name a few. So when it came time for me to choose some new equipment I pondered on the question.....Can I get low cost equipment that would sound great? I actually experimented combining my high end equipment to home theater and it really sounded fantastic. So it was really a surprise when I read an article about Outlaw. True, I can't try them out unlike before with my previous gear but with so many high praises I decided to give it a try. I ordered the model 1050. It came to me via DHL overnight (I'm impressed). As soon as I got home and opened the box which by the way was packed really well (I know I used to worked as a shipping clerk) I got shocked by the the weight of it. It's built quality is not like those mass market AVR's I see in Best Buy etc...
Now the real test.....
I combined it with my Paradigm speakers. Set-up was fairly easy. I used Monster Cables for my equipment. Hooked it up with my JVC DVD-Audio player and was ready to go....
I popped in a couple of my DVD's First was T2 ultimate Ed.
Man, was I impressed.....it sounded clean, highs were just right not bright, not painful to the ears. Panning was great, seperation was well defined. Bass was smooth not boomy. I didnt know receivers can do this. I tried several DVD's and notice that this receiver will sound great if the material is recorded well especially DTS. It will also show the flaws if not done right. Next, I tried music CD's...my opinion on this is it does not sound as great as my seperates but at 1/10 of the price who's complaining. Before I forget, use an SPL meter it sounds a lot, lot better after I calibrated it. For the price of this receiver, it is an exceptional value. I have no complains. I am looking forward to purchase the 950. If you want good sound but your not willing to pay the price this is the equipment for you....now I have extra money to go on a vacation......hooray!!!!

Strength:

Great sound, easy to use and setup.

Weakness:

S-video switching has major problems.

This is a solid home theater receiver. Very easy to use, one look and you know it is a quality piece. My big problem is that trying to run a DVD player through it via S-video gives major picture problems. Outlaw says they cannot offer a fix, so I am bummed, I would give it 5 stars if it worked. Since the video switching is a big part of a home theater, then they only get 3. Either do it right or leave it out it their motto, but not on this matter.

Strength:

Ease of use, bulky & well built. Wonderful sound

Weakness:

No DTS ES, no B speaker output, not all codes work on remote

All I can say is WOW! Im talking day and night difference from my older Pioneer pro logic rcvr. The cheap speakers that I have, Bose Interaudio types, have never sounded so good. I am glad that I read all the reviews in here, because I dont think I could of done as well by going with the Denon 2802 that I originaly wanted. I ordered it 12/14 and got it 12/17 because of the weekend. The longest weekend I have had in a long time.

Like I said above, after a quick glance at the manual and a little hands on, I have this unit mastered. Its no big deal to set the xover, surround levels or anything. Pretty much set and forget, but not because its a hassle. Because it sounds so damm good. My wife can work it too, and the rather plain face is growing on her fast.
I find its sound is bright, but I do like treble, and its no big deal to turn the treble down a few db. I find it has S-loads of available bass. I wish I had better speakers to hear what it could really put out.
All the controls are well marked and intuitive on the remote and on the face.

No A & B speakers outs, too bad, I could really use that feature. No DTS ES, no biggie, I dont even own a DVD that has that feature, just DTS. And trust me, it sounds GREAT!

The remote doesnt work my JVC vcr. Not sure why, the book has 5 pages of codes but none work.
The remote is very cool to look at when lit. The buzz others wrote about, its true, but with mine at least, I have to press it hard against my head and do it in a quiet room to hear it. So I guess I wont be strapping it to my head when watching movies. :-)

Stereo sound is great, 3 channel stereo is even better!

I was concerned with the posted 65 watts, it is not a concern. Must be the clean high current output that makes it sound louder than my Pioneer. I have not experienced any distortion or unwated compression because of the high volume I listen too yet! I have to watch it because my speakers wont survive that volume for long! Im talking loud, big time loud! I cant wait till I can hook up some quality speakers or do a comparison with someones more expensive reciever.

Bottom line, a great reciever for the money and the seller is a solid one with no worries about buying from a internet company. The reviews about other New York and Jersey sellers was enough for me to steer clear and go with this reciever, Im so glad I did.

4 Stars on "overall" becasue the no AB speakers. Important to me, otherwise it would of gotten 5

Strength:

Peformance to price ratio, build quality, customer service, looks and design.

Weakness:

Slightly noisy headphone output.

I like to buy products that are a good value for the money. You don't get rich by spending money on expensive things. And, it's not smart to buy things when the cost is not justified by the results of the product. The Outlaw 10506.1 AV Receiver is certainly a good honest value. In fact, for you could pay much more and still not get as good of a unit.

I had told myself that I was doing ok with a Dolby Pro Logic only receiver. Quite frankly, I didn't know what the heck I was missing! The price, design, build quality, manual and customer service from Outlaw is outstanding! I can only hope that these remain excellent going forward as the company grows. I've seen too many great small companies either get bought out by a large manufacturer, or grow too big for their own good, causing both their products and their dedication to customer service suffer. Outlaw seems to have a smart business plan, I hope they can keep up the great work, and not change a thing. Outlaw's customer service is so nice that you just want to support a company like that. Refreshing in today's sea of corporate bureaucracies and customer service reps who just don't care.

Essentially, I agree with all the positive comments people have already left and can add no more without being redundant.

When I first hooked up my 1050, and put in a CD, I thought that it sounded lacking in the midrange. I then realized that my ears had been trained to like more consumer mid-fi sounding units with lots of artificial mid bass extension. The 1050 is more transparent, and it reveals well what is recorded on your CDs and DVDs. Put in a well recorded source, and the the 1050 rewards you by being faithful to the recording without artificially coloring the sound. [Actually, it's your speakers and room dynamics that will color the sound more than anything else.]

Some people want THX certification. I don't feel like it's worth it. It costs the manufacter money, which is then reflected in the cost of the product. THX is a George Lucas licensing gimmick and means nothing if you can get a better or equal sounding unit at a lower cost! The Outlaw 1050 is fully compatible with THX material and sounds equal to if not better than everything but the most expensive THX certified gear out there.

My only complaint (albeit a very small one) is the fact that there is a slight buzz in the headphones during silent passages. It cannot be heard when music is playing though. If you plan on using headphones a lot or exclusively, then perhaps is not the unit for you. Still, i use headphones with the 1050 on occaision and despite the fact that I can hear the slight buzz during quiet passages, I still enjoy the music and movies while my neighbors think I'm sleeping.

You can feel confident in buying from Outlaw. I did and am quite happy given the price I paid. I do not honestly think i could have gotten an equivalent unit (both in terms of sound and features) for this price.
