I'VE ONLY HAD THE UNIT FOR ABOUT A WEEK, BUT I CAN
SAY THAT THE OUTLAW BURIES MY MARANTZ IN BUILD QUALITY -
THE THING IS BUILT LIKE THE PROVERBIAL "BRICK OUTHOUSE"!

MY LIMITED USE WITH DOLBY-DIGITAL AND DTS SUGGESTS THAT THE
65 WATTS PER CHANNEL EASILY KEEPS-UP WITH(AND PROBABLY OUT-PERFORMS) THE MARANTZ'S 110 WATTS. INCREDIBLE DYNAMICS!
I WAS A LITTLE SKEPTICAL(LIKE SOME OTHER REVIEWERS) BUT I
DON'T THINK ADDING OUTBOARD AMPS IS NECESSARY - UNLESS YOU
HAVE REALLY INEFFICIENT SPEAKERS IN A LARGE ROOM.

I STILL NEED SOME MUSIC LISTENING TIME, BUT I THINK I WILL
ENJOY THAT TOO. MY ONLY COMPLAINT CONCERNS THE REMOTE CONTROL: WHEN I UNWRAPPED IT, THE PLASTIC LENS FOR THE
TRANSMITTER WAS LOOSE AND RATTLED AROUND IN THE HOUSING.
SEEING HOW WELL-BUILT THE RECEIVER WAS, I WASN'T ABOUT TO LET THIS AFFECT MY IMPRESSION OF THE OUTLAWS. I TOOK SOME DOUBLE SIDED FOAM TAPE, CUT A THIN STRIP AND WEDGED IT INTO THE GAP BETWEEN THE LENS AND THE CASE - VOILA! NO MORE CHEAP SOUNDING RATTLE.

I LOOKED AT AND LISTENED TO SEVERAL OTHER BRANDS(YAMAHA, DENON AND MARANTZ) IN THE $1000.00 AND UNDER RANGE. I BELIEVE THE OUTLAW REPRESENTS THE BEST PERFORMANCE TO PRICE VALUE IN THAT RANGE - AND SINCE THE PRICE JUST DROPPED $100, I CAN RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT WITHOUT HESITATION.
THIS RECIEVER HAS EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS SO FAR- AND THAT IS NO SMALL FEAT!

see nitpicks below

You won't find a better A/V receiver for anywhere near $600 (new), so stop looking. Plenty of clean, dynamic power at 65W; this baby drives my 4 ohm Seas Odin speakers with room to spare. The 1050 is the dividing line between "Best Buy" grade equipment and audiophile equipment.

Awesome customer service, the questions I had about connecting my subwoofer were promptly and knowledgeably answered. You will get better service with Outlaw than you will with any retail outlet.

At $600, you are trading off some asthetic and "ease of use" features for solid performance. For example, the display suffers from some parallax problems making it difficult to immediately tell whether you are in DTS or Dolby Digital (but does this really matter?) This unit has its share of bell and whistles, and I suppose the various modes could be easier to navigate and switch between, but for this price I am not complaining.

If you have been thinking about getting one of these, get it. You won't regret it. Put the savings toward some better speakers, so you can experience where the true value of the Outlaw lies.

Price - Great Home Theatre

Weakness:

None for me

I puchased the Outlaw 1050 after researching receivers here and in all the popular audio review magazines. I was also looking at the lower end Onkyo and Yamaha receivers. I have it paired up with four paradigm atoms a paradigm 10 sub and paradigm center channel. DTS, Dolby digital and even normal Dolby surround sound increadible. Watching the HBO Band of Brothers miniseries makes me wonder how I ever survived without surround sound. I also purchased my first DVD audio disk and it sounds great on the Outlaw. The channel seperation on the Bela Fleck Blue Grass Sessions really shows off the possabilities of the format. I'm still fiddle with the sub cross over to try and determine the best settings for my speakers.
I even find the remote pretty easy to use, although I cannot seem to get it programmed to control my Nakimichi CD player.
Overall, I'm completely satisfied with purchase (especially since I procrastinated long enough for Outlaw to lower the price by $100).

I bought on the strength of many positive reviews and am very happy I did. The unit arrived 2-3 days after internet order placed. HEAVY, quality unit. Great sound.
Best of all, Scott, in customer service practically helped me set up my whole HT system, patiently answering questions re TV, DVD, cables etc, etc. Didn't think I could, but it is together and kicks ass!!! Very glad I got the 6th ch. center surround. A week later I bought the sound meter from
Radio Shack and cal. the speakers...what a difference, highly recommended.

plenty of power ,sounds great ,best bang for the buck

Weakness:

remote could be better. It is like a all-in-one remote ,but it works and no way can it ever be a buying factor

The reason I even looked at getting a new receiver is that I bought a set of new speakers from edge audio and my denon really did not do them any justice as far as bass management was concern otherwise everything was ok ,until I got my outlaw. Wow!!! is all we could say when I got it hooked up and turned it on. At that piont I knew my denon was gone.
Not only was the bass better but the sound was so so so much cleaner ,crisp and fresh. I would not have ever believed it unless I heard it. Before I thought nothing could beat my denon so with that I almost bought a 3801 but Now I am sure glad I tried the Outlaws first.
I would like to say thanks to the outlaws for making such a outstanding product at such an unbeatable price.
I would like to also say to the people that are looking to buy a receiver in the future ,I know how it feels to make a decision based on reviews. To most of us $500 bucks is lot of money and even though outlaw has a 30 day return you still have to pay the shipping ,so if it is not what eveyone says it is you either have to keep the thing or lose the shipping charges and all the hassles that goes along with it. So it might be easier to go to Best buy and get something local. Let me say to you that I have done the shopping ,all the price comparisons ,all the worring hoping to get the best deal. So if you are reading these reviews and you are really wanting a new receiver do yourself a favor and trust the guys here and go to the site and get yours ,if not you will always wonder if you really got the best deal out there. I am really really happy with mine and I am going to recommend them to all my friends.
Good luck

This replaced the old surround system. Everything good that has been said about this is true. When I first hooked it up, the unit would not stay on. I was very upset. I posted the problem on Outlaws saloon. I left a phone number. Got a call from a Mr. Caldwell from the west coast. It was 12:45AM at my house. It was the best wake up call I have answered. He told me to unhook the speakers and then turn on the unit. If that didn't work to unhook the other units. Turned out the speaker wires were touching. Fixed the problem right away. I had everything up & running by 3 AM.
The system is very solid. As anything new it takes time to get use to it. You need to take your time and realize it will take pratice to get use to everything. I had to redo the VCR hook up. I hooked up the digital cable. Over all the system was easy to hook up. I didn't need to use the book until I started on the speaker adjustments. The problem I had was do to my error. The remote has no hum like has been reported elsewhere. I am impressed. I bought the JBL 135 home theater speakers. I like them, but already thinking about getting better speakers. Have to work on wife somemore.

Strength:

6.1 that is better than 2.1, 4.1, and 5.1. The 6.1 really does add a lot to the realism of the viewing experience. The standard 65w all around gives you plenty of umph to watch anything. Given that you have more choices and capabilities than receivers of nearly TWICE the cost, you are getting a value that is only attainable with the lack of a middle sales person. This unit is built like a tank.

Weakness:

I personally like big output gauges like those of McIntosh, but that is no reason to not buy this receiver.

I would buy this unit hands down until I started looking at products in the $1800+ range. This units trumps all others below $1200 with no exceptions from my experience.

I have much experience with three different Yamaha a/v receivers and they are all beat far and away by the Outlaw.

Quality Builds - sounds great

Weakness:

Cannot listen to it before buying (minor point since there is a 30 day return policy)

I have only had this set-up for about a weak now. I was considering the DENON 2802 but went with this one instead. I was hesitant at first to buy off the internet but the reviews on this and other sites convinced me to give it a try - I have no plans to return it.

I have yet to optimize all the settings and it sounds very good. I will soon take the time to "tune" all of the speaker settings and think it will make it sound great.

Am am no audiophile but do enjoy both music and watching DVD's and am very pleased with the purchase.

I think the remote is good but not great. The buzzing sound people have been complaining about is audible but not distracting for me.

Well built, sound quality, price, easy set-up, no bells and whistles, excellent customer service, warranty

Weakness:

No for this price range

This is one fine piece of equipment for $499. I previously owned a Technics AX6 and thought it was OK. It was a pro-logic receiver and I wanted to upgrade to digital. The search began.

I auditioned Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Sony. I had it narrowed down to Denon or Yamaha. It then came down to Denon. Then someone mentioned the Outlaw 1050 and I am so glad he did. The problem was I could not audition the unit. But the many reviews relieved any doubts because of their customer service and return policy.

I made the decision and purchased the Outlaw. I ordered it at 3:40 Pm and it arrived the NEXT morning at 10:20. I soon became aware the weight difference - 36+ pounds. The Technics seemed like a feather. Some gripe about the looks but I personally like the looks (plain and simple).

But what about the sound. It sounded better than the Yamaha's and Denon's I auditioned and certainly much, much better than my Technics and only paid $150 more than the Technics. I heard things on my CD's that I never knew was there and the DVD's - Amazing. If you close your eyes you would think the people are standing in your living room. It brought my speakers to a whole new level. You would be hardpressed to find another receiver as good as the Outlaw in the price range.

My system is as follows:

B&W 601's
B&W LCR (for center
Sony rears (soon to be replace)
JVC 501D
Sony DVD
