Strength:
Awsome clarity and good power for this price range reciever.
Weakness:
S-video outputs Like most people that replied to numerous threads, I too was skeptical of the infamous "hissing" at high levels. But went ahead and got it mostly because of a nice low bid on Ubid. I have AR226ps rear surrounds, Wharfedale Modus8'up front, JBL 150w sub, and Advent 420 center channel. All of these were bought here and there at damn good prices that couldn't be passed by and I was a little worried about the mixing of the brands but it sounds spectacular. While watching Saving Private Ryan at very high levels, it felt as if there were tanks rolling through my living room! As for the hissing sound, I haven't noticed it and I have cranked everything from Metallica to Mozart and think it was money well spent! |

no banana plugs for rear i was long looking for a receiver and this is my 3rd receiver in a span of 4 months. at first i had 2 pioneer vsx series. nothing is really wrong with the pioneer except of the lack of 5 channel stereo.i chose between denon and onkyo because of the 5 channel stereo. at first i was looking for the 676 series. unfortunately b coz of the hiss problem, i wasnt able to find one here in phil. the 676 was somewhat pulled out bcoz of this error from 676. Strength:
5 channel stereo, DTS decoder
Weakness:
None This reveiw is for all the people out there who are ready to upgrade their systems to DTS home theater. After reading most of the entries here, I thought I should write my own. To start off, this receiver is a very good value for what it offers. The sound from the Sony and Denon didn't warrant the extra money (Sony didn't offer 5chn stereo) Panasonic sounded a little "tinny", no 5chn stereo. I can't beleive that any mid-priced receiver can make any quality speaker sound that much better or worse. So forget about the speaker issue. As far as the "hiss". Most models out there have been fixed, you can tell this by the -B after the model number. So ask about this if you are buying discounted units. It does run a little warm after a couple of hours, it's because of the heavy duty circuitry. DTS, make sure that your DVD player is set to play in DTS mode, most manf. have this set to off at initial set-up (read your DVD manual). I like the fact that I can set the distance and size of each of my speakers on the unit, although bass and treble only work the front speakers. I listen to music, watch movies & TV equally and this unit is superb in all modes. Again a great investment for anyone out there ready to upgrade to home theater and still have great stereo sound for music. Similar Products Used: Auditoned Denon, Panasonic, Sony at CC |

Monster hiss still exits I just purchased the new 575x model from CC. I have been tracking the reviews on the Onkyo receivers for the past couple months and thought the dreaded hiss problem was finally gone. I was wrong. Just purchased the new 575x and it has an incredibly annoying hiss. Needless to say, I will be returning the unit tomorrow. Good luck if you purchase this unit. Sounds like a crap shoot as to whether you get the hiss or not. |

Strength:
5.1 Ch rca independent inputs if you do not have coaxial or digital out
Weakness:
trouble with the law for neighbor complaints (cracked walls and windows), no weaknesses, NO hiss, some lack of features though In all a GREAT receiver for the price, it is powerful and clean, dvds sound great, as for fm and other inputs, the surround modes do ok, some sound better, one of the features that should be added is the memory of the speaker level settings for the multiple sources, the only one that remembers the setting after shutting down the receiver is the 5ch. input. Strength:
Wonderful sound. Flexible configurations.
Weakness:
It only works a little over half the time. Customer support is very weak (I have been on hold for over thirty minutes as I type this.) Wonderful unit if it works. It has been broken four times in 7 months. Onkyo has it now and I can't find out the status of my unit. |

Subwoofer output? I really like this unit. I'm a poor college student and I'm really into computer audio. Unfortuately, I bought the best computer speaker system out there (Cambridge SW) and it has much to be desired of. I'm making the upgrade to the Sound Blaster Live for the digital out (analog out from my SB 512 needs almost 80% volume). As of yet, I've only heard analog inputs through a single pair of old speakers, but this thing really plays. And full volume is just that. The sound is concert-loud and distortion is very low. Great for shaking the dorm. My only complaint thus far is with the subwoofer output. The only time I can get any thing from it is when I connect my Apex 600a (also great) DVD player's digital out to it. (or of course when I select "multi" source and put a signal to the input). I am just wondering did I miss the page in the manual that allows you to output to the subwoofer from an analog input (like from my vcr)? I guess I can always have a Y adapter to feed an input to the sub, but I'd really like to think this unit is capable of feeding the sub out from any source. If you know what I'm doing wrong, please let me know at gielamonster@hotmail.com Similar Products Used: Ancient JVC that would turn the left channel on and off at random. |

Onkyo built like a tank. Good power. Clean sound.
Weakness:
Seems to draw negative reviews from brainless buttholes who can't get a life and move on. This receiver is excellent. I highly recommend it. An excellent value for the money. I don't hear any "hiss", and I listen very closely. Yes, the S-inputs aren't there like you'd think, but I don't need them -- just how many S sources is someone buying an amp in this price range planning to hook up anyway??? This receiver should have better overall ratings than it does, but there is one guy who keeps logging on under a single name and posting the same negative crap over and over and over. Read down and find the similarities in what this guy posts under different names. This unit is a bargain, and Onkyo stuff is built very well. I'd keep it, but I got deals on 2 Denon recievers, and this and one of them have got to go. I'm buried in receivers!!! :) Similar Products Used: Denon, Technics |

No S-video switching. Slight hiss. I had both the Sony unit (above) and the Onkyo at home for a few weeks to try them out. I was impressed by the Onkyo's preentation of both music and HT. The Onkyo ran cooler, sounded clearer and created a better soundstage than the Sony. Although both units had a 'hiss' problem, the Onkyo's was constant throughout the volume range, whereas the Sony's hiss would increase with an increase in the volume setting. At very low volume levels, the Onkyo had slightly more hiss than the Sony. The Sony quickly got worse than the Onkyo as volume was raised (Onkyo apparently has a fix for the hissing). I did notice that the Onkyo's hiss would be reduced by shutting off the Subwoofer output, and run the unit in stereo mode. Plenty of power and clear sound made me choose the Onkyo - I would recommend it. Similar Products Used: Sony STRDE935 |
