I just purchased this receiver a week ago from the BuyingEdge site (through Sound City). The price was reasonable, considering the $50 rebate. Compared to my former Sony receiver (and a Kenwood that I bought and returned), the Onkyo really seems like a step up in terms of quality and stability. This is reflected in their longer factory guarantee too. There are far fewer "bells and whistles" on this receiver, just good clean sound. Unlike my Sony receivers, this one stays cool and seems to pump out sound effortlessly. The remote functions with all of my other A/V products and is quite intuitive to use. This receiver provides a minimum of features in its price category, but really delivers on sound quality.

I just got my 575 today. It is replacing a Technics SA-EX510. The difference is night and day. The Onkyo will go to full volume with absolutely no distortion, and is so much cleaner and crisper. The DSP modes are a nice bonus and I love the programable remote. Can't wait untill I get my DVD drive and Digital soundcard to test out some AC-3 movies. Overall an unbeatable deal for under $400

This receiver is a very solid product. It replaces an Onkyo TX-SV313PRO. Now before you discount my review as just another Onkyo loyalist staying 'in the family', I searched very hard for 7 months before buying this receiver. I compared Yamaha (795/595a), Sony (925/935), Sony ES (30/333), Kenwood (2090), Nakamichi (AV10), JVC (884), Toshiba (1507), and Onkyo (555/575). All of these at some point over the 7 month search were in my price range, except probably the Nak (easily the hands down winner of all these, but also over a 1000 dollars). All of the following comparisons were done with the same speakers but in different listening rooms-I could not find a dealer that sold all of these models to facilitate the use of the same room. The sound was rich and full from the Yamahas and the Onkyos especially considering their competition (the JVC and Sonys were harsh and tinny with seemingly little power in comparison). I could not find local dealers for the Sony ES, Kenwood, nor Toshiba and I was mail order was completely unacceptable or something I had not even hear for myself.
There was little diference between the Onkyo and the Yamaha and so the final decsion was based on features. In short, the learning remote of the Onkyo won out over the butt-ugly 'universal' remote of the Yamaha. Also the Onkyo ended up giving me the features and sound for the best price point (~$490 retail, it can be had for under $400 at leesvideo.com but I was unwilling to go with mail order).

I would like to echo the opinion of a few past reviews in that there is not a bottom-less well of power from this receiver. My previous Onkyo (rated at only 60 watts) blows away the volume output of the 575 (rated at 70 watts). Only on very rare occasions would I dare venture beyond 3/8 total volume on the 313, but I am consitantly at or above 1/2 total volume of the 575. I still do not think that I will ever 'run out of power' with this receiver, but it is queer that a 60 watt receiver out powers a 70 watt receiver from the same company.

The receiver has performed perfectly upto this point-ABSOLUTLY NO HISS-as reported by other reviews. Dolby digital DVDs decodes flawlessly. I have not tried DTS yet but I should have a sampler to try soon. I really like the different sound fields, especially the 5 Ch. Stereo with CDs. The remote is in one word AWESOME. I have not tried the Marantz king-of-remotes, but I have a hard time believing that it is much better. The Onkyo remote has learned every command I have thrown at it and it is user friendly enough for the whole family (just my wife now, but this receiver will be here long enough for the kids to use).

To be fair, The receiver does lack S-video inputs and a digital out but for me this was a non-issue. My television lack S-video input and I have no MD/CD recorder. To sum up, this receiver provides everything I wanted and more in a digital receiver at a price I could live with.

Strength:

Sound quality, ease of use, price, remote control

Weakness:

For the price, none

I purchased the Onkyo 575 a couple of weeks ago from best price audio video on ebay. The cost was $369 plus $17 shipping. I finally got the receiver a couple of days ago, and I am very happy with it. For music, the 5 channel stereo mode is great. There is no other receiver on the market other than the Bose Lifestyle system, that has that feature. For home theater, it sounds great and packs a good punch. I haven't been able to get near the max volume and I like things loud. The remote is great. It is a learning remote that is laid out very well. Within about a half hour, I had the thing programmed to run every piece of equipment that I own. I put away my pile of remotes and now only need the onkyo. This receiver has everything, (including DTS built in), that most audio enthusiasts will ever need. As Onkyo states in their online brochure, this might be the last receiver you ever buy.

Strength:

Ease of installation and great remote control.

Weakness:

No S-Video Connection

Outstanding receiver for the price ($411 delivered). I had this receiver for about 8 weeks now, and the reviews from previous posts (whatever happened to those reviews when this site was upgraded???), no discerning HISS whatsoever.

Highly recommended

Ok Remote

Weakness:

Hisssss! Lack of basic s-vhs.

I've been using this receiver for 2 weeks and i'll take it back since it has a terrible hissing problem. I hate it. My room is small so the rear speakers are really close to me and what i hear at low volume is a hiss mixing with the sound coming from the rear speakers. Another thing is the lack of basic connections like S-VHS!

UMMM...I can still return it...

Weakness:

HISS HISS HISS...Lack of bass response..

I have to agree with John's review below...Disconnected all inputs and the amp still hisses...it is very noticeable...especially if you are sitting close to your surrounds...it is unbearable...got the same response from Onkyo. "All receiver's hiss. Our amp hisses b/c of it's ultrawide bandwidth." Sure it does. Tech support was terrible, too. Believe the reviews, this thing is a waste of money. No S Video input's for this amount of $????

Killer Learning Remote with Macros

G'day all ,
Well this is my second review of this product , for some reason my first was lost when they changed the format of this web page
I have been using my Onkyo for almost 6 months , I took my TX-DS474 back to the shop when the 575 came out mainly for the DTS reasons plus the extra power.
For all those people out there who are looking for a receiver with DTS and DD chips the Onkyo hits the mark for both price and features . If you get the chance I recommend the Asian model which comes with S-video connections.
I got my first DTS dvd this week ( Saving Private Ryan) and
the onkyo blew me away . The sound stage was alive with bullets passing overhead and bombs exploding with heavy bass.

ps. I'm in love with my remote , I hit one button and it turns on the TV , Video , Onkyo , cable and CD player .

By the way I still think Toshiba make the best DVD players.
