Strength:

2-way stereo sound, natural, qreat DD and DTS separation, many input available, price, Marantz style

Weakness:

no phono input, meaningless remote, unbeilevable short manual

it's really happy for me to hv this product. increible stereo sound when use it for music. i found that its appearance in high frequencies music is much better than Yamaha product like the 795a. Bass is also gd when in cinema usage. u may try it using "a bug's life". The price is gd to buy such a gd product. Later i will find another 5-channel power amp to upgrate the system instead of changing the SR-5000

TURN IT UP...IT DOESN'T JUST GET LOUDER..IT GETS BIGGER !!!

Weakness:

THE WORLD WE LIVE IN...UNIT MADE OF PLASTIC..ON/OFF PWR&SPKR
SWITHCHES HAVE CHEAPER 'FEEL' THAN I EXPECTED FROM MARANTZ.

I BOUGHT THIS UNIT BECAUSE IT IS A MARANTZ AND IN IT'S PRICE
RANGE, ALL ELSE STEPS BACK. AT FIRST LISTEN I WAS A BIT UNSURE ABOUT SOUND QUALITY, THEN I TURNED IT UP TO AROUND
65 DECIBLES AND THIS THING TOOK ON A LIFE OF IT'S OWN. AT AROUND 71 DECIBLES AND SOME RE-ADJUSTING OF THE BASS/TREBLE
I REALIZED THAT THE ROOF OF MY HOUSE WOULD BLOW OFF FROM THE SOUND PRESSURE BEFORE THIS BABY SHOWED ANY SIGNS OF STRAIN. ( 4 LARGE ADVENTS CAN PRODUCE QUITE A LARGE SOUND )
UNIT IS SOOOO EASY TOO USE AND HOOK UP. REMOTE IS OKAY.
YEAH. THERE ARE A LOT OF SMALL BUTTONS ALL SCRUNCHED TOGHETHER, BUT A BIT OF ATTENTION AND IT'S USEABLE.
THEY SAY BECAUSE THE MUSIC MATTERS, AND THEY LIVE UP TO IT.GREAT SOUND FROM ANY SOURCE, INCLUDING OLD VINYL.
MOVIE SOUND TRACKS COME ALIVE. WHEN LISTENING TO MUSIC IN 2-CHANNEL THE ROOM STILL FEELS IN SURROUND.
OH YEAH, SOME OF YOU COMMENT THAT THE SOUND SEEMS TO GET BETTER WITH TIME...THAT'S JUST YOUR EARS ADJUSTING TO MARANTZ SOUND...IT'S BEEN UNIQUE FOR MANY YEARS.

Strength:

Excellent sound, clean, great mid-range, warm, open soundstage

Weakness:

Manuel (but don't need it), Remote is not all that bad. Busy looking with lots of buttons but very easy to use.

An awsome receiver for the $600.00 budget. It blows the doors off the Harman Kardon and Sony. Excellent sourround sound. Tight, clean, hard hitting base. I auditioned, Onkyo, Sony, Yamaha, Denon and actually bought the HK (but returned it). The Marantz wins hands down. Very easy set-up. I've had better remotes, but I see no need to upgrade. I bought it for movies only and it out preforms all I tested, can't say enough about it. Excellent receiver, just excellent. The HK lacked surround sound, it sounded flat with not much detail from the rears and the mid-range was week. Allthough the HK was better than my Sony, it can't compare to the Marantz.

Peace Out!

Strength:

Good dolby digital, and DTS and also Pro Logic. 6ch in/outs
nice stereo and movie clarity.

Weakness:

surround modes sound bad. lacks some bass when listening in 2 channel stereo mode

Overall I really like this receiver.. especially for the price. It's a great deal! I wanted a high current receiver and only looked at two other brands, Yamaha and Onkyo. I'm happy I chose this one. Was also looking at the Marantz SR7000, but it was just out of my price range. I'm sure the SR5000 is very similar to the SR7000, a few less features and a bit less power. but hey, this one sounds pretty damn good to me.
Only problem I find, is that it seems a little bright to me. Plus it seems to lack some good thundering bass when listening in analog stereo mode. Anyone out there know what a solution might be to add more bass to my music? I turn the bass knob to the right.. but it doesn't seem to add much either. Maybe I need some new kick butt speakers?
Movies in 5.1 sound awesome. DTS is out of this world. That was the main reason I bought this receiver.. was for the DTS. Remote is fair. So I decided to replace it with a Marantz RC2000 remote instead.. i like that much better.
As far as the power ratings go.. it's rated at 70wpc x 5. I find that I do have to crank it up much more than I used to over my old Pioneer receiver. Pioneer was rated at 100wpc, but it didn't sound anywhere as clear as this Marantz does.
True the users manual is not very helpful, but the receiver is so user friendly that it's not tough to figure out at all. I'd give the Marantz SR5000 a 4.5 stars.. close to 5, but not quite there. Anyone looking for DD, 6ch, DTS and a clean no hiss high current receiver, should look close at this receiver. I"m now a Marantz fan. Because music matters.

So far so good. I have it hooked up to a pair of old sony bookshelf speakers and replaced my old sony reciever and the speakers never sounded so good. I cam waiting on Energy Take 5's with the ES-8 sub to get in so I'll tell you more.

BTW if you know anyone who works for Philips ask them to get this for you. My father in law was able to get it at an employee discount for $450!!! You can get alot of the new Marantz stuff at great discounts.

Strength:

Purity of the sound,It is effortless, digital and dts w/ s-video for price range, and it isn't clogged with fancy, processings to kill the current.

Weakness:

Manual and remote (although both which you can live with.)

Well, I am needless to say speechless about the 5000. Being in audio for quite a few years i took the liberty of trying many recivers before the marantz, from denon to yamaha, to even b&k and proceed, all seem forced and loaded with fancy shmancy circutry, and processings I would never use. I found the sr5000 can be summed up in one sentence. Seprates sound without the seprates price. It is extremely easy to use (any one with common sence doesn't even need the manual) and the sound, from dynamic range to midrange warmpth, amazed me from the get go. In dolby digital AND DTS, the sound is always impacting and crisp even when the sound seems a little demanding. It put to shame the sony seprates my buddy has. This reciver is just another wonder made by maranz...value, sound, intensity, and quality, all in one.

Sound...clarity, no distortion, clean. Build, looks, controller.

Weakness:

Manual!!!!!

I just bought this reciever and very happy with the purchase. Many features with this baby and it rocks. Setting the speaker levels a little trickey if you are a novice but it does a wonderful job. Two channel music is awesome and powerful when turned up!!! The soundstage is amazing and movies is especially incredible!!! Pro-Logic sounds great too fot tv and I recommend this receiver to anybody that wants a high quality receiver.

Strength:

Sound

Weakness:

Remote control, Manual, Poor spec disclosure.

The manual for this product is bad! It pull down the overall quality of the whole product.

There is no mention of how to hook up the subwoofer. (any thoughts on this would be appreciated).

It is not clear how to setup the sound level of each speaker. The different modes for each set of speakers "Front", "Center", "Rear". Modes are "Large" or "Small" does not make sense .

Again the Manual is so bad, I have no way of knowing if my set ups are correct and that I'm getting the best possible sound.

Other wise it is a great sounding receiver in basic stereo mode and dolby digital. The other modes are not very good. Too bright and echoee.

Marantz's should be ashamed to produce such poor specs and manual.

Shame on you Marantz.

Marantz web site. Poor!

I would like to return the receiver and try something else with a better instructional manual.
