Ok i don't know why people are complaining about a "HUM" or a "BUZZ", with this reciever, i have had no problems with it, i have it on >70 and i get no hum or buzz, and i got 2 15" Tannoy speakers, people hearing the hum or buzz must have crapy or blown speakers. The dobly digital decoding is great on it, very easy to use, awesome surround sound, with my 2 Tannoy M1's for rear and a Clement for my center, i hear no distortion or anything, very high powerfull wattage, 100x5, so far i am impressed, i could be more pleased with what i bought, i have always bought JVC, all my stuff is jvc, and always will buy jvc, it's a good bang for your buck!

Strength:

On-screen Programming, 500W power, Optical Digital In, Naming of the radio channels

Weakness:

Lack of DTS, no bass response with bookshelfs alone, remote not compatible with new equipment

This is my first real receiver. For years I was stuck with my parent's old Marantz stero reveiver. This has been a Godsend for me and my family, as we like to watch alot of movies. Right now, I only have the receiver setup to a pair of JBL N24 speakers. The bass response is quite low however, and I am looking for a low proced sub to beef up movies and music. The picture quality of my VCR is excellent through the receiver. The optical digital in with my 2 year old Sony CD player is incredible. I can really crank the music loud without distorting the quality of the music. The on-screen programming is an amazing feature. As of right now, I need a DVD player, surround and center speakers, and a sub to complete my home theatre. The sound fills my 12' x 12' room. I love it. Great receiver at a great price.

Strength:

sounds great for the price

Weakness:

hiss and jvc customer service

well i took my 778 back to jvc. they analyzed and and again said there was no hiss. i wnt to pick it up and told them "hook it up right here. i want to hear it in your store w/o the hiss before i leave." they got 4 speakers and hooked it up to the FR, FL, RR, RL and to a vcr/tv combo. as soon as they cranked it up, hisssssssssss from the right rear.

they looked at it dumbfounded as if it just now magically started doing this strange hissing noise. i said "this is the damn noise that i was talking about, i dont know how ou hooked it up to your badass sound system and didnt hear it but there it is." his excuse was that in the lab it was cranked up so loud that he couldnt hear the hiss (which is true, you can crank it to 80 or so, the hiss is the same level but you can crank the volume over it if you want to bleed from the ears).

they went in, found a loose resistor inside somewhere, soldered it back together and it sounds awesome. i do love the quality of it, it sounds great and on my jvc-511 dvd player it looks great. i just wish it didnt take over a year before they finally fixed it.

and thus ends the jvc 778 hissing problem. it exists because of a reciever defect, and can be fixed.

This receiver is actually better than its predecessors (884, 7XX, 6XX) in terms of power handling and Dolby Digital built-in decoder. Mind you 884 doesn't have AC-3 decoder built in.Overall, the features are enough to live with, neat LCD display, volume setting/control is a satisfaction, and sound quality is clean for the price range.
I've been using this unit for 2 years with no complaints. Enslaved and abused for movie playing, still going and going and going (make sure it has enough ventilation tho...)
A good receiver!

Strength:

great sound, lots of features

Weakness:

very low but noticeable buzz from right rear speaker

I actually have a JVC 8010V but it is a similar product. I ahve been knowcking my brains out trying to get rid of the buzz from the rear right speaker. I swapped cables, I tested other speakers, and I hooked up other speakers to the rear right output. The only explanation is the rear right output from the receiver. I have a very nice set of Infinity surround sound speakers so I know it is not the speakers - especially since I tested each one on the rear right channel and all of them produce the same result on that specific channel. If anyone has any more information on how to fix it, please e-mail me.

I bought this reciever in the middle of July of '99, and have been very pleased ever since. This reciever could have had a bit more gadgets on the reciever it self for the price you pay (roughly $350). I think that it should have had front inputs, two subwoofer inputs, not one. The thing that realy get's me is, that this reciever doesn't have rear plug ports, for other devices such as a cd player, tape deck etc. I thought that was a little odd. Nevertheless, in the over all performance, it does a great job. I would have given it 4 stars, maybe even 5. Now i am not too sure about reliability, because I have only had this reciever less then a week. Therefore, I hope that you enjoy your new reciever :)

It's a decent receiver with some bells and whistles. The lack of inputs is compensated by rigid build and clean, good power. Highly recommended for home theatre use (AC-3 built in) and music listening is an OK. The features are all great. The sound is warm and solid.
Bought this unit for 330 in August this year.
Overall, it's a good investment! No complaint whatsoever.

Strength:

Many features not found on other receivers that are the same priced

Weakness:

Not many inputs as the 888vbk. No DTS decoder built in. Binding posts on "main" only

I dont understand why there are so many complaints about a "HUM or BUZZ" I own a pair of Cerwin vega VS-150's and cerwin surrounds and they are highly effecient and when the volume is set at 40 or 50 it is so loud i couldint possible listen to a movie that loud! People claim to hear a hum at 55-70 on the volume and it might be because your speakers are so ineffecient that you need to crank the amp to where its working hard to put out that much power to the speakers. Its a great solid amp and i have run many surround receivers on these speakers but this one is the best so far for the price and features you get on it. I give it a 4 star cause i would like to have binding posts on the rear and center channels also, and DTS sure would be nice to have extra but thats why you need the extra bucks for the 888vbk. I would recomend this amp to anyone wanting to start a Digital theater anyday!

Similar Products Used:

I had a Kenwood 2090 and for twice the price as the jvc not much different.

Strength:

Price and features

Weakness:

No coaxial digital inputs, no 5ch stereo mode found on new receivers

This is a great buy at Costco for $249. Nothing comes close to the quality and features for this price. The on screen setup is great. It also has a great one-touch operation feature in which the receiver remembers the settings of subwoofer level, center level, surround mode, etc., for each input, so you don't have to constantly adjust the settings when you change from DVD, to CD, etc. The only 2 things lacking are a coaxial digital input, (this is a major drawback as many low end DVDs only have coaxial not optical outs), and 5.1 ch inputs for future upgrades. This does not have DTS decoding, which does not matter at all because there are barely any DTS encoded DVDs available and even still, you cannot really rent them anyway (no rental store stocks 'em). This receiver has plenty of power, I have it hooked up in a budget "Costco" configuration w/4 Advent Marbl surrounds, and a 15inch Audiosource sub, and it rocks!
