Strength:

Exceptional sound quality, wide array of connectors and capabilities--analog, digital (coax and optical), S-Video, pre-amp, on-screen display, full function remote, flexibility.

Weakness:

I personally haven't encountered any weaknesses. I'll post again later it I uncover any, but after running thjis baby through the paces I see no weaknesses.

JVC must have had a mid-model year ec change on this unit since mine has none of the hiss or hum referenced by others. It seems of high quality, and the sound quality is outstanding. Since all my video components have S-Video capability I appreciate all the connectors. Also, having a total of four digital ports (1 digital coax, 3 digital optical) is great. I use one optical for my JVC DVD player for Dolby 5.1 DVDs, plus use my DVD player for music CDs (thereby eliminating one antiquated CD player component from the stack). I use another optical for my Dolby-capable Hughes Satellite receiver. I tore apart and labeled my wiring, removed and replaced my "old" receiver with my new 1028VBK last night, and tested everything. Maybe I should start worrying but I had no problem with the user manual--it even included a separate "quick start" sheet folded up inside the manual with about 8-10 key steps. I have my Dolby 5.1 audio and music CDs coming in on the "DVD Digital" setting, and my satellite coming in on the "CD Digital" setting (since I no longer need my CDROM). This receiver is opening up a new world of sound and features for me and my home theater. For the price ($450 delivered) and features, this is an outstanding price performer. If you can still find one on the net, grab it quickly. If not, I would hope JVC's 2000 model is equally solid.

Strength:

Nice unit if it worked

Weakness:

I havn't seen the unit for over 2 months.

A quick update, I took my unit to Martha Lake Electronics, one month later they sent it to JVC. 2 months I have been without my receiver. The Martha Lake electronic representative say's that most of their factory warranty repairs are from Ubid.I should had bought this unit locally. The $50 I saved doesn't seem so great since a local merchant would have replaced it.This is the downside to shopping on line. I have bought most of my electronic gear on line in the past. This is my last electronic purchase from UBID and JVC. The reason I have updated with these comments is I beleive this should be considered when buying this unit from a prominant e commerce retailer.
I wish I had not bought this unit and I hope it saves someone else this same experience.

Strength:

Excellent design, clean sound, versatile

Weakness:

Not much, considering it's price range

I always wait until a new model year comes around to buy the last years model. You can always get a deal, and you can get reviews and experience from other users first. But with the 1028 is was even more important, as their newer model (RX-9000V) is a cheaper unit...

I paid $449 for my 1028 from Computability on 06/25/00 (watch their S/H prices, they will rip you off if you're not careful. Always call and ask for their 2nd/3rd day S/H $ first, as their online page ONLY offers overnight or ground)

I've owned other receivers, but for the price, I don't think you can beat this unit. Some have mentioned a hum. I heard it *one* time slightly, and it was with the cd player paused, but have never heard it again. And it did not, and does not, have any hum while playing anything.

I also read of some complaints of the fluorescent display being too bright. That is utterly rediculous, as the unit has a dimmer switch that auto dims the unit ALL the time for you, if you wish. The button is right on the front panel!

The advanced class-A amp sounds excellent, period. I have optical digital cables for sound from my DVD and CD player, and everybody mentions how clear and transparent the sound is. Once set up to match your speakers and sub-woofer, the unit is thrilling. Compared to my 884, it is quite an improvement.

Excellent options on the unit as well as the remote. Someone mentioned they thought the remote was too complex. Well, I like having everything I CAN have on the remote, it just takes time to learn it. Once learned, this remote is very useful. And the background lighting is unbelievably good in the dark.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the RF multi-room transmitter, that allows you to use the remote from ANY room in the house. Now that is slick. Put some speakers in your office or bedroom, and you can control everything from that room with the remote. I love it, and it works perfectly.

The ability to handle add-on pre-amps/amps is a huge plus. You can virtually make the 1028 into as powerful a unit as you want, if you have the cash.

Overall, this is one fine and good looking unit. I have all JVC equipment now, and the "compu-link" makes it all work together great. I really don't think you can beat this for the price, and I have listened to quite a few others.

***NOTE: I would recommend buying the 1028 over the new 9000 ANY day. The 9000 *is* the 1028, but cheapened. I looked very carefully at the two. They essentially took features off the 1028, cut the amp output down, took the background lighting off the remote, etc, etc, and ended up with the 9000. The 9000 has NO new features over the 1028. Compare the SRP and features on both at www.jvc.com, and you'll see what I mean.
============================================================

Bottom line...if you can still find it, get it.

(Computability still had 9 units in stock the last I checked. These are brand-new, unopened, not refurbished)

I just took this receiver back from whence I got it. Actually what happened was I was having problems with the JVC 701 cd player I had (got both for the K2 interface, which by the way produced pretty clean music) When my Eagles Hell Freezes Over dvd wouldn't play on the DTS mode and other dvd aggravations I decided it was time to send it back. My sales guy said he'd let me take back both units even though I had them for 4 months and upgrade to the Denon AVR-3300 and Denon Dvd-2500 for 425 buck more. Couldn't pass it up.

But let me just say that I'll miss my JVC. I've owned JVC receivers for about 10 years now. The 1028 was a joy to use. It never waivered, and pumped out great sound levels into my Def Tech BP-20's (the best front speakers for your money) and my Paradigm PS-1200 (the best sub for your money)Have been nothing but pleased with my JVC amp. But I'm an upgrade freak. Just don't tell my wife how much all these upgrades are or it intantaneous divorce for me.

Bye JVC,
I'll miss you

Strength:

More than enough inputs for any system; able to listen to different music at the same time in different rooms.

Weakness:

Manual needs a little more detail to inderstand some of the complexities; Remote is a little weak.

The music quality seems clear, clean, and powerful. I do not have the hissing or buzzing background noise reported by other reviewers. I have experienced the loud crackle/pop from the front speakers one time when the volume was almost all the way up. This popping could've been from over-driving the speakers rather than the receiver amp.

I am using digital inputs for my JVC satellite reciever and JVC DVD player. The DD 5.1 works fine with DVD moview. The satellite only as PCM digital (unless you order pay for view moview which I never have). The PCM digital also works fine. I don't have anything with DTS so I don't know about that.

The dual room capability of this receiver is great. I can listen to CD music in the garage or patio while listening to a DBS satellite signal in the main room.

I took me a while to figue out all the software switching and terminology since I was new to Dolby Digital, PCM, and DTS digital concepts.

So far, everything that this receiver is supposed to do functions exactly as it is supposed. I still don't have a subwoofer, but plan to add one soon.

Seems to me the value of this reciever for the price is high considering all the inputs and digital capability.
