I like the unit, but I have a big question: I connected the DSS receiver and cannot get the 1028 to decode the Dolby Digital signal from Direct TV. I installed the optic cable, I checked the optic socket assignments and every thing else I could think to do. Then I switched the DSS/DVD cables and the 1028 will decode the DSS Dolby 5.1 when the cables are hooked to the DVD port so it must be the 1028? |

Weakness:
I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but it let's out alot of heat so if you don't have a heater then here you go.It makes a popping sound every once in a while. When I first read about this receiver it was in sound&vision mag.I wanted it badly so I order it throght J&R music world with the shiping and everything it came to $550.00. I received it 4 days later hook it up and all I could say is wow. This is some receiver I had no trouble with it at all except for the weakness that I filled in at the top.also the remote is just about perfect you could control it almost anywhere thats all I got is JVC component's so it help's me alot. Then when i got some digital cables everything sounded alot different I was playing everything again from movies to cds.I really cant say what everybody else was hearing but I know I didnt hear what they were hearing. All I know is when you want something you should reseach it first before you buy it[to the people who bought this receiver at UBID]MAKE SURE YOU GET SOME KIND OF WARRANTY WHEN YOU ORDER SOMETHING NEVER BUY SOMETHING FROM SOMEONE THAT YOU DON'T KNOW OR COMPANIES THAT GET THERE THINGS USED THAT IS ALL YOUR GUY'S FAULT THAT GOT THIS RECEIVER FROM UBID. Strength:
Lots of Opticals inputs. Solidly built.
Weakness:
Sound quality isnt very good. This was a OK receiver for me until I upgraded to an Onkyo Integra 7.1. for $200 more than I paid for this thing new. I instantly heard the difference in sound quality. I owned a HarmonKardon ProLogic reciever before this one, and was sad I updgraded to this. But I could not afford to upgrade again w/o my wife stabbing me hehehe. The reason I got rid of the harmon kardon was because i wanted to go Dolby Digital etc... Similar Products Used: Onkyo Prologic Rcvr,Harmon Kardon,This Thing,Onkyo Integra 7.1 |

Its hard to setup initially plus poor remote design and you can't operate DVD player with this remote. I got this one recently it sounds great for that price. Its really worth purchasing this reciever. It has every thing. The only problem I have is you have to turn volume all the way upto 60 other wise you wont feel good dolby digital sounds other than that its good and I don't have any hiss problem also. If I have any I will be back Similar Products Used: JVC-778,JVC-668 |

I recently bought this unit since I liked the feature set and wanted to take advantage of the compu-link features with my JVC D-VHS Dish Network system. I also got a great price on it - $500 delivered. I had read all the comments here about the hum problem, but since some had it and some didn't I thought I'd take a chance. Unfortunately, my unit has it also. It is very noticeable at volumes above 45. I'm not talking about hiss, but a hum that absolutely should not exist even on a cheap amp. Now for the hiss..... any amp in this price range is going to have hiss at higher volumes, but this one has more than the 10 year old Sony it replaced. Granted, it was a top of the line Sony, but I expected a top of the line JVC with ten year newer technology to have less hiss at comparable volumes, not more! Finally, no one else here said if they connected the pre-out jacks to another amp. I tried to pre-out the center channel and subwoofer signals and it is apparently not even sending signals to these jacks. Even though it is possible I just got a lemon (I will find out since I have a replacement coming) I am left baffled that JVC quality control could allow this unit to ever leave the factory. |

I have had this receiver for a month now, and am very happy with it. I have only owned JVC components (with exception of speakers) since I began buying audio/video equipment in '93. Before you categorize me as a JVC biased person (only to a sensible extent), my one and only receiver before this was a JVC RX-809 model, bought in August '93. Great power, but probably less than a year from buying, it demonstrated an intermittent annoying squeal/tone over the speakers when playing from the TV or VCR (included DVD when I got that, early '99). CD and tape sources were fine. However, being the casual listener that I am, I put up with it until new technology would come along that would tempt me to purchase another receiver. Well, Dolby Digital and DTS came out, and since I had the DVD player, I decided to upgrade to something that would bring out the best in it. Reading numerous reviews on this site, I was willing to switch to another brand receiver, although the JVC compulink system is an extremely nice feature to have, when having other JVC components. However, the prices floored me, and from what I read, the JVC RX-1028 was going to be my receiver for at least the next 6 years (bang for the buck). I got it online, for $585 including shipping. Yes, you must turn up the volume control for what seems like an eternity (compared to older receivers)to get "loud" sound, but once you hit a certain point (between 40-60, depending on what your listening to), anything higher is either to impress your girlfriend or the people at your party. For the first time tonight, I experienced the hiss that some reviewers wrote about on this page. It was during the DVD version of "Excalibur," and the volume was set at 60, during the Director's commentary. I noticed it from the rear speakers only, didn't check the front speakers (I was lounging, to relaxed to do some scientific testing). This is the first time I have heard that in over a month of daily listening, and it wasn't so annoying as you might think from some posts written here (i.e., not overly noticeable), so take that for what it's worth. The remote has more buttons (read: more complex) than the one from the RX-809, but nothing seems too difficult, and it has red lighting for the buttons (annoying or cool, depends on your perspective). The inputs (digital and S-VHS) for the receiver are great for the price, from what I've read from other receiver reviews. My other JVC components are as follows, for those interested; CD Player: XL-207 Carousel(bought Oct '93), Tape player: TD-309 (Oct '93), DVD player: XV-D2000 (Jan'99), VCR: Hi Fi HR-J61OU (Mar '95), and TV, a JVC 31"(Sep '95) model I'm not to sure of the model number, here at 1:30am! So, in conclusion, if you're looking for NO hiss (noticeable or not) at ALL levels and well, NO hiss, I guess step up to the higher priced receivers. Otherwise, if you're looking for very good performance at a cheaper price, then I guess you should consider the JVC RX-1028. |

Very versatile, Looks great, Sounds great.
Weakness:
NONE I have had the 1028 for well over a year now. I bought it through Amazon.com for $60 (they had it mispriced for a while). I have had absolutely no problems with it. It has worked flawlessly. I have never heard any strange noises come out of it that weren't supposed to. The RF remote works great from anywhere in my house. I have not used many other receivers, but I am very impressed with the versatility of this unit. The receiver does get warm, but that has never caused me any problems. I love this receiver and would buy it again. |

Strength:
Great feature list. Great mid-fi receiver for the money. RF remote works great.
Weakness:
No optical output as my slave Rob(Shmedlap) says. For a mid-fi receiver this is great value. If you want a better quality receiver(Denon AVR 3300, Nak AV-10) then go and spend the extra money. I originally wanted to get either the Denon 3300 or the Nak Av-10 but with tax time coming up, well you know the rest. I owe a butt-load to Uncle SAM. I wanted a good receiver for under $600. Bought mine for $551 from Supreme Video. I've no hiss or hum from my unit even with max compression with all other components turned off and volume at near max(70-75) without the HTS 3500 Power conditioner and I say again WITHOUT. Max = 80. The Video switching is flawless and saving EQ settings for each source component couldn't be easier. Manual is mediocre. Remote is fairly intuitive. takes about 1.5 weeks to get used to. There are more than enough analog and digital inputs which is great for upgreat or component additions. Now the most important - Sound. For a mid-fi this is truly astounding. With all of the frequency range set at FLAT this unit puts out a very clean sound throughout the frequency range. I have connected to type of subwoofers to this unit. The POLK PSW 650 and the Infinity HT-500(at the showroom floor with room dimension to mirro my own space at home. If you like a nice tight bass(Polk PSW650) tight bass is my preference ? It will deliver! If you like you a booming bass(rap, etc. using the Infinity HTS 500)? It will deliver! Midrange(at FLAT or NEUTRAL setting) - Opera, movie dialog, etc is liquid smooth and not harsh. High frequency range - Crisp and clear without high end saturation. At what volume setting will the integrity of these characteristics be retained? Well I slowly turned up the volume at at 73 was when clipping began at pro-logic mode. Clipping began at 68 with pro-logic off. Not bad at all. Now the Video sound test. Pretty much the same description when popped in a movie w/o DTS. With DTS? The receiver was high in the "WOW! " factor. Sound distribution and seperation was very, very good. This mid-fi receiver is a very good value for the money. Similar Products Used: DENON AVR 1400 |
