"PL-II does not make use of the subwoofer. In the cinema-wide mode subwoofer does not perform even though the manual shows it as operative. Subwoofer does not maintain consistent volume level from one mode to the next."

    Can anyone confirm this?
I want to buy the 3802, but if this is true, that's a big weakness.
It seems strange, because the onkyo 595 does make use of the subwwoofer in Pro-Logic II.

    Thanks

    Alberto

Before step 4 you must change the Input Source to the Tuner. Press the yellow "1/Tuner" button to do this.

    Strength:

    great sound

    Weakness:

    not found

I demo'd several receivers Arcam, Sony, H/K, Onkyo, Nad. This receiver offered the most features, power, and ease of use of any. As an audio enthusiast, I have to temper wants and desires with a practical price ceiling. Subtle differences were noticed when playing DVD's between the receivers, with Denon offering the clearest, cleanest sound. Performance is outstanging. To me, this product represent a very good balance between, performance, features and price. I have it with Sonus Faber Electa, AR Athena and Boston Micro 90x, a Hitachi DWV1E (DVD/LD/CD/ player), and Sony Dat. To me, the AVR 3802 is one of the finest receiver available today.

    Strength:

    Inputs/Outputs

This reciever has been great, it was a snap to install out of the box. All of the inputs/outputs are clearly labeled in the manuel so you do not have to turn the thing around every time you want to add new components to the system. The menus are easy to use and there was a lot of flexibility in configuring the audio setup. As for strengths, there are all the inputs you can ever need and it sounds fantastic. I also really like how it auto detects the signal coming in for DVDs so you do not have to figure out whether it is Dolby Digital or DTS. On the downside, there is no IEEE 1391 input but we will see if that becomes an issue and if you have really large speakers and want the system to really thump, you might be pressing the amp a bit. I would definately reccomend this reciever for anyone with a mid to large sized system that wants a quality reciever for a great price.

    Strength:

Very good sound quality, good balance between price and power.

    Weakness:

    remote control, I also purchased a Marantz RC2000mkII (168)

Overall Im very happy with the receiver, I have the avr3802 hooked up to a Klipsch Reference series speaker system that is very efficient. The bass response seems to be tighter than the sr8000 and the 5 channel stereo mode is great for live music. I would have given the receiver a 5 if the remote would have been better.

    Strength:

Full detailed sound ; bass delivery ; power

    Weakness:

remote control; number of digital inputs

First I had a Marantz SR-7200, I loved the sound but I started noticing things that should not be there (see my reviews for the Marantz SR-7200)

Since 2 days I have the AVR-3802 and I noticed immedeately 2 big differences : bass reproduction is much better and the detailed sound. The Marantz sounded very bright and playfull but in the higher tones it exagerated (compared with the Denon). The Denon sounds more flat but I guess this is the real sound (like it is meant to be).

I play all kinds of music and I noticed that the Marantz lost its detail in classical music (expecially with violins). I have a Denon DCD-2560 (with 4 DACs, ASLC, ...) and when I used the analog channel it sounded better, clearer (less higher tones but more detail) than through the digital channel of my Marantz. This was the first CD I tried with my AVR-3802 and there is hardly any difference between the 2 sounds (analog/digital). I was misleaded at my first impression with the Marantz. After all I'm glad things turned out that way (only that the AVR-3802 is $580 (US) more expensive in Belgium than the Marantz SR-7200).

I will come back later after I tested it more in detail (My Marantz started making noises after more than 1 month of use so I'll never know what this puppy will do...)

    Strength:

Tons of features, sound quality, DTS ES, DPL IIpower

    Weakness:

Useless adjustable crossover (80, 100, 120 Hz), remote could be better

This receiver rocks. Music and movies quality is above anything else at this price range. I noticed a big sound improvement after I upgraded from my Sony STR 935 receiver (used to be a believer only in Sony products). You can't go wrong with Denon, it's a really good product and I highly recommend it.

    Strength:

DTSES, DPLII, 7 x 110w, OSD is very cool, Fantastic price for DTSES

    Weakness:

Poor remote, Not THX, No A and B speaker outs for front channels

This is my first true "high-end" Receiver. I really wanted a Amp that had DTSES and 2 powered surround back channels instead of just one. I don't think that you can find a better receiver for this price.

The only bad thing was the remote. Previous reviewers are correct in calling the ergonomics very poor.

    My set-up:

    Mains - Mission 773e
    Center - Mission 77cd1
    Rears - Mission 77ds x 4
    Subwoofer - Yamaha YST-320

    Amp - Denon AVR-3802
    DVD - Sony 700p
Tv - 32" tosibia (soon to be 50" Tosibia HD Wide Screen)
Speaker cable - All Monster referance Z2 and Z1

Wow! Talk about a night and day difference between this receiver and my old sony. I am loving this receiver, as it has definately brought my home theater to life. After a few weeks of debate between this receiver and the Onkyo tx-ds898, I didn't think the extra $350 was worth it for THX certification. I am very satisfied with my decision, and plenty surprised on the price I was able to get from lgdsuperstore.com.

Here is my system as it stands:
TV - Panasonic CT32-sf37 (GREAT TELEVISION!)
    VCR - Panasonic pv4562
DVD - Sony Playstation 2 w/ Monster Component
DBS - PVR 501 (Dish Network) with Dolby Digital out
    MD - Sony
    Center Channel - Polk cs4001
    Fronts - Cerwin Vega AT-12
    Rear - Polk rt25i
