Strength:

Contain many attributes of the big brother 5700, Upgradeable to decode DTS (if necessary), plenty of power to run impedance challenged speakers, easy to use.

Weakness:

None, what so ever

I wanted to purchase a receiver that acted, performed and looked like an high-end component but didn't have the price tag. So when I read the specs on the Denon AVR 2700, I was surprised Denon didn't put a $1K price tag on it. When your getting Dolby Digital decoding, 24 bit 96 kHz Burr-Brown DACs on all 6 channels, 80 Watts x 5, Digital Signal Processing, Enhanced bass management,Intelligent On Screen Display, 4 Pre-0uts(L,R,C, and sub) which I use to provide enhanced amplification for my mains and cc and to boot a remote that glows in the dark!! And as stated below somewhere that this particular unit was featured in Stereophile mag and it claimed to out perform the Yamaha and the Sony. So if you're asking yourself the question,"I want the best receiver money can buy without taking out a 2nd on your mortgage and your wife chewing you another orfice, then you should be considering the Denon AVR 2700 as a unit to demo....

Strength:

A very good sound for the money, extremely easy to use

Weakness:

Sound mode on the remote

When this product was going to come out I went to Tweeters and ordered one because I thought if the 3200 was an excelente product this one would carry on the 3200 excelency.
As soon as I hooked and fired up the Goldeneye Laser Disc I was impress because for tthe money I paid it was very good sound over all. But it wasn`t until I played a CD and my wife noticed the diference between the Denon 2700 And the Technics 770 (which I paid $500) and she found the sound of the 2700 much more better than that on the Technics, that I said to me if some one that just listen to music like she does and doesn`t know anything about equipment can tell a diference, hey! Does not that tell you something?
And finally is so easy to use that my 8 years old daugther has no problems playing DVDs or Lasers thru the Denon.
For what we paid for you just can`t get any better than that.

Strength:

Sound is Clean and neutral, very solid

Weakness:

only 85 w so if you have a large room get something with more bite

A good unit, Only complaint is the remote. It is mated with a pair of NHT super2's front, and old sony POS for center, and SUperzero's for surround.

Does fine, plenty of power for the NHT's in spite of thier unsensative nature. get yourself one!

Strength:

5 Channel stereo, expandability, warm sound, remote, great sound even at low volume levels

Weakness:

no rear pre-out

No contest, best A/V rcvr anywhere near this price. Much warmer sound than Sony ES,Yamaha,or Sherwood. The only way you can do better is by spending MUCH more money, but then we're talking about another group of product. D-A converters are the same as those in much pricier pieces of gear. Was not a blind follower of Denon, especially considering thier spotty customer service history, but I kept going back to this one. Have never had a problem with this or any other Denon product, but I know of others who have. This is a great performer, throw in the low price and you can't lose. Buy one used if you can find it.

Strength:

Quality sound good versatility

Denon has always offered a quality product without breaking your bank. That history continues with this A/V Receiver. It offers a variety of connection options, a good sounding preamp section, a solid digital decoder, a fine and sweet sounding amp section.

Yes, there are some disappointments:
1. Though the amp section of the receiver is sweet sounding, it is a wimpy 85 watts (not a robust 85 watts).
2. The amplifier also has some barely detectable distortion. I couldn't hear it until I plugged in my Rotel amp that has much better specs. Shouldn't bother you unless you have access to better equipment..even then it isn't terribly bothersome.
3. Preamp outputs are limited to Main Speakers, center & sub. Main speaker pre-out does not differentiate between front channel sounds from ohers when in Surround operation.
4. The remote, though better than many, is still awkward to use. No explanation in the manual about some buttons. Door that hides the set-up functions is clunky and breakable.
5. Needs additional video output for Picture In Picture operation.
6. Switching sound fields using the remote is cumbersome. To get from Dolby Surround to Direct Stereo, one must press the proper button on the remote 8 times to cycle through other sound fields to get to the one you want (9 times if you want Stereo with tone controls).

Still, this is a product worth owning. Not a world beater, but mostly solid performace at a reasonable price.

Strength:

5 channel stereo, glow in the dark remote, bi-wireable fronts and center

Weakness:

no rear outs, just frons, center and sub

I purchased the AVR-2700 in Sept. 1999 (it was discontinued) for around $500. For the money, it is a good reciever. I have Paradigm PS-1000 10 inch powered sub and there is NO lack of bass...in fact there is a little too much....I have Paradigm Monitor Series fronts and center, and I have a nice pair of Bose 4.2's as surrounds. The amp's volume goes from -60 to +06, and there is NO distortion when playing the Matrix lobby scene at +06. Eardrum shattering highs, but no distorion. I noticed that the rear speakers leave a little to be desired, and the lack of rear outs is a thorn in the side of this wonderful reciever. 5 Channel Stereo is the way to go for music, and because of that this is an excellent buy....

Equipment:
Denon AVR-2700
(using to power the front speakers, and for 5 Channel Stereo)
Marantz SR-5000
(used to power the rear speakers, and for Dolby DigitalDTS)
Onkyo A-7 (integrated Amp)
(used to power the center channel)
Paradigm Monitor 3 speakers
(6.5 inch 2-ways....used as fronts)
Paradigm CC-350
(center channel)
Paradigm PS-1000
(150 W RMS powered sub)
Bose 4.s speakers
(8 inch 3-ways....wood finish)
Sony VAIO computer
(DVD player MP3 player CD-RW)

(this is a combination of two peoples stereos....don't try this at home!)

Strength:

Transparent and balanced sound

Weakness:

slight lack of headroom, and I mean slight in DD with all speakers in full range.

I am running my 2700 with B&W 602 series 2 speakers. I have run the system in a large room and small room listening to mainly 2 channel music, and have been very happy with the sound. If you have a cheap CD player, then the Burr-Brown decoding chips will bring new life to your music. It took the new Nakamichi MB-10 CD player to finally surpass the sound of the onboard decoder.

I listen to 2 channel music in direct mode with the Sub turned off and the bass is deep and the imaging is wonderful. I think that some of the people that are having bass problems may want to try something like Audiquest type 4 speaker wire, it made a big differance in the sound on my system and its fairly cheap.

As far as movies go, the sound is also wonderful. You should be able to find one of these units used out there for little money. I think its an incredible performer in 2 channel direct mode, and you would have to pay around 1000 to get any improvement. When you throw in the surround performance, you really understand the value.

As a side note, the sound softens after the amp is hot, so let it warm up before you listen. Also, the toslink sound quality is a little lower than the coax digital input.

I can't say enough about this receiver. At $525 mail order, it is a steal. Very easy to use, and the complaints about having to have a TV to configure it are irrelevant in my opinion. Who buys a DD receiver and doesn't hook it up to a TV. The on-screen programming was straight forward and easy to use.
This receiver is great with both music and HT!

Feature laden and well constructed, this is a great buy!

I compared this next to the Yamaha RX-V793 and I must say, get the Yamaha. It's a much cleaner, dynamic sounding receiver with better quality. The Denon was very cheap looking, the cabinet flexed so buzzing can occur with it. The Denon didn't have any bass punch or extention. I thought maybe the bass knob was turned downed but wasn't. The dealer said that's one of the main reasons people return it. He said people who are loyal to the Denon name buy the receivers but most don't care for their sound quality. He said most say it's grainy and forward with the bass missing. I couldn't believe thats what everyone was saying, because I thought the same thing. Even the way the the receiver was made, with every function only available though the remote or on-screen menus. For the Yamaha, you could lose the remote and still use all features except sleep and mute, big deal. I just couldn't believe it sounded so bad. I didn't think Denon became that bad over the years. I guess that's why all the magazines give the receivers bad reviews. I never go by what reviewers say because they can be biased but they sure where telling the truth with all the problems the Denons have. I even tried the more costly 3200 and it sounded just as bad. Do people not compare anymore? How could one buy this thing when the bad qualities are so obvious? Well, maybe the reliability is good. I can't see any other reason for buying these two receivers with such horrible sound. I can give only a 1 star because it still can reproduce music, just not very good.
