Strength:

Quality, Great sound

Weakness:

Dirty remote. You can't imagine.

Very Good receiver for price.Very clear. Very enjoyable for music and movies. However, the brochure provided by the dealer reads 100x5 watts where as the system is actually 80x5. deserves a sue. As for the product nothing to complain except the remote. Me always hardup for power, will go ahead with a bigger one next time. The control of the system is distributed between the remote and on the recvr. To me all the controls should be available on both.

Strength:

Big punch to rock your house, and fine pristine detail in all frequencies.

Weakness:

Everyone talks about the remote control, well that is true but it is a minor thing since I like to controled the old fashioned way, at the receiver itself. The only thing that I don't like is the painted logo in the front panel instead of the raised gold lettering, (minor thing too)

What a monster!! This receiver really meets the expectations of a new home theatre fanatic and pleases an old audio enthusiastic. The frequency response is brutal! even in the "tone defeat on" mode. solid construction, beautiful to look at, this Denon is by far my best buy ever.

Strength:

Plenty of input/output options.

Weakness:

The remote is a little hard to use.

After 10 years my Sony STR-AV1020 is finally on its way out. So I decdied to purchase a new amp. The surround sound on this AVR-1802 sounds great! I miss the 120 watts per channel of my old amp but I am very pleased with the sound quality and options the 1802 provides.

I bought this to run the digital output from my PC. I initially bought a closeout Marantz 4000 but returned it due to somewhat weak sound. I am driving a pair of Kef Q15s for mains and some crappy old Yamahas for rears. I have a Compaq subwoofer (yes Compaq... It actually rocks for this application) and am using the phantom mode for the center channel info. Initial setup was indeed confusing (an onscreen display would be nice), but once I figured it out, I have not had to mess with it. The remote does indeed suck. All I need to use it for is to change the source occasionally and for volume control, but its small clustered buttons even make this a chore. On to the good stuff. The sound quality is superb. I am only filling an office, but I think this would make an excellent light duty theater amp. I have Rotel separates in my main system, but I'm considering another one of these for my bedroom. In my initial search, I looked at Yamaha, Sony, HK, Marantz, and Onkyo. In this price range, the Denon really has no competitors.

please no more brand name painted in panel, I love the raised metal lettering

What a Monster! first it was asleep, then I did all the setup and he woke up and blow away my old system and all my expectations. Rich bass clean highs and overall a true natural sound that won''t hurt your ears with unrealistic tones. Very happy with it.

Strength:

Excellent sound, transient response, clarity, and impact. Easy to use, and just enough modes with not a lot of extra junk you don''''t need.

Weakness:

Remote is multicolored, small, cheesy, and confusing.

I bought this receiver to replace my Denon AVR-1601 receiver. My 1601 had fried itself. I can honestly say after living with my AVR-1601 for nine months that this unit sounds astonishingly better. For starters, my system consists of the Mirage FRX series matched speakers: FRX-7 fronts, FRX Center and rears, and a custom made 12" sub in a sealed enclosure sporting 200 wattts. My initial impression upon viewing the back of this unit is one of great happiness; this receiver has everything on it. From phono inputs to multiple VCR''''s and S-Video switching, it is all covered. Secondly, all the speaker terminals are screw connecters...gone are the cheesy spring clips from the AVR-1601 model I replaced. I powered up and began the setup. the directions are slightly confusing, but I was able to figure it all out. I think this is a positive, because when it is finally set up the user will have a thorough understanding of just how it is all set up. The Pro-Logic II is leaps and bounds above the old Pro-Logic I in sound quality and realism. My two channel stereo sources (Dire Straits - Brotheres in Arms, for example) have taken on a new life. I then compared teh old modes I was familiar with: Rock Arena, Matrix, 5 channel stereo, and Jazz Club: The extra power compared to my 1601 Unit really makes a difference. transients were much tighter, snare drum hits were much more clear, the impact of all percussion was much tighter, and overall I was extremely satisfied. I set up a $600. Sony unit last week, with its umpteen million overprocessed surround modes, and although some of them sounded good, it was confusing. the Denon is about as straightforward as you can get. No extra crap you don''''t need. And top quality sound to round it out. Only time will tell if this unit is more durable than my 1601. If it survives, I will be very pleased, as this is the best sounding sub $1000.00 receiver I have heard to date.

Strength:

DPL2, number of inputs, sound quality, great bang for buck

Weakness:

not worth mentioning

This receiver is unbelievable! I was initally going to get the AVR-1602 but here in Australia, Denon is finding it hard to meet demand for that model at the moment and so offered the 1802 at a discounted price for a limited time. I couldn''t resist not to get it as it''s a much better receiver with more inputs, S-video and also a cool gold finish :D Setting up was pretty straight forward, but people who aren''t very cluey might have a few problems. Although I did have a little problem as I had my DVD running thru coax and the Xbox thru optical input 1. You cannot have two devices in said inputs both at the same time, it''s only one or the other. This wasn''t explained in the manual.. As soon as I plugged the Xbox into Optical input 2 all was good. Halo running thru 5.1 is truly amazing, every shot can be heard from every direction. The sound quality of the 1802 is very crisp and clear as you would expect. I have it running thru a set of Denon SC-50HTB 5.1 speaker pack which does the job nicely in my smallish bedroom. As for the remote, it''s a bit daunting at first but you do get used to it and it isn''t as bad as you first thought. It still would have been nice for Denon to either stick to sole receiver buttons or incorporate the buttons for other devices and make the remote bigger. All in all I thoroughly recommend this receiver, I have listened to other receivers (namely JVC, Sony & Yamaha) but there was something missing which didn''t become apparent until I listened to the Denon.

Strength:

Performance for the price. Dolby Pro Logic II. Excellent Dolby Digital Surround and DTS processing.

Weakness:

None

I spent over 4 months researching a mid-level A/V receiver and determined the AVR-1802 to be the best deal for the money. I was almost sold on the JVC RX-9010VBK until reading more than a few reviews on here about how the Dolby Digital Surround was unstable. My next delima was where to find the best price. I had reservations about buying a Denon online because of their strict rules about not honoring their warranty if bought from a non-authorized dealer plus all the other nightmares you hear about etailers however my worries were eased when I found a company that said they would honor the dealers warranty even if they wouldn''''t! Their price was $180 less. The setup was easy and instructions were clear. I had to invest another $75.00 in cables (Acoustic Research) but I think it''''s a wise investment. Everyone is complaining about the remote control but I don''''t see anything wrong with it. The buttons aren''''t too small and I have big hands ;-) I''''m 5''''9" - 185lbs just so you''''ll know. As far as performance goes I don''''t think there''''s another receiver in this price range that can beat it. The Dolby Digital Surround and DTS are incredible. Also the Dolby Pro Logic II is much improved over the original Pro Logic and sounds almost as good as Dolby Digital and DTS. The sound is strong, crisp, clear and full. I highly recommend this receiver.

Strength:

Sound quality is the primary strength. Can be played extremely loud without distortion and the gain is uniform across entire bandwidth.

Weakness:

Sometimes clips after playing continuously for 6 hours or longer (is this asking too much??)

This is a masterpiece. Excellent sound quality - evenly balanced lows, mids and highs. I looked at yamaha RV530 and Onkyo before deciding on Denon. Yamaha RV530 was too loud, Onkyo was still good but nothing was close to Denon. I owned a Denon AVR1200 earlier and this was an easy choice for replacement. The 5 channel stereo is great for listening to music although I prefer stereo for old analag sources. Home theater mode Dolby PL-II is amazing. I use JBL-N38II towers as front mains, JBL-NCenter and N28II as sorrounds. I do not have a subwoofer as yet but the bass is quite enough. I am not sure whether I should go for the subwoofer.
