Strength:

sound dolby digital ex, prologic 2, dts es all thos neo matrix stuff. awesome sound for $500

Weakness:

how can i explain this. on the surround back isnt powered like the 3802. the 3802 has 2 amps pushing the surround backs, 1803 has one.

i am in the market for a new reciever. i had my heart set on the denon 3802 but know all the new models are out. well i have a small listen room and dont want to over do anything. i came up on the 1803, dont know how much of a difference it is from the 1802's but danggggg. well this little champ amazed me so much sound out of 500 bucks. when i was at the dealer dang i forgot the name but its in charlotte, or you can go to now audio. well anyway this puupy can play some movies. i listen to the starwars 2 dvd and man i started to druel. there was a couple who also listen to it and they loved it. i love chapert 29 i think with the sonic charges.. woooow lets just say that im gonna but one on layway asap.. why layway, well you know christmas is coming up so i got to make sure theres some money for other people. but the denon makes me want to say Damn you all to hell i want my denon. the dealer also told me that the 1803 has enough head room to fill 3000 cubic feet of listen space. i figure that to be a room thats 20x19 now how many of use have listening rooms that big.

Strength:

Sound Reproduction, Ease of use, 3 optical in's, features, price

Weakness:

Would be nicer in Silver, Optical2 doesn't work on my unit,

Best receiver for the price...by far. I auditioned everything from $900 Sony's (not ES) to $400 Yamahas, and the Denon reproduces HT and Stereo sounds flawlessly. I use it to power some inefficient Audio Concept Sapphire II speakers, and it drives them beautifully. This unit is all the average person should ever need. Even my technophovbe girlfriend can operate it with ease. I don't plan on upgrading until it dies. My only problem with it is the Optical2 doesn't work, but this will be fixed under warranty. Note: Price paid is for Demo unit in Canadian dollars.

The Denon receiver that I bought has been incredible. I have had nothing but complements on my system and will be a denon shopper for a long time.

Strength:

A great value, excellent quality in it's sound reproduction.

Weakness:

only one that there is the remote, but all receivers have unsatisfactory remotes.

Sorry but this is not my first review on this site for this product, but after having it for over half a year i would like to do a little more in depth review of it. First of all if you are new to home theater there are some things you need to know: 1)sometimes less is actually more, the specs on the 1802 state 80 watts by 5 channels. This a good true rating. Don't think that the Panasonic(or other cheaper compaies that don't specialize in av receivers)that is two hundred dollars less and the power specs on it say that it is 100 watts by 6. Please don't get sucked into that because it's not acurate at all. The power it would be producing is less "clean" or "pure" and would not be as good as the Denon's 80watts. 2)things like the quality of power tranformers and DAC's(Digtal Audio Converters)and processing make a big difference and can make or break the sound of a receiver. Here is what I have observed from my Denon AVR-1802 over the last 6 months: -Good clean power -Can play my Paradigm Monitor series speakers as loud as they really need to be played(although more power the better always as long as it is good power unlike some crappy power amps) -This receiver with my speakers can still amaze me. All i have to do is turn on my system and pop in Black Hawk Down or Lord of the Rings and be amazed. -Dynamic sound -easy to use -the remote is not laid out the most logically and could feel of better quality(although it seems everyone is fussy on remotes on all av gear) -it makes me smile when I put in a good dvd or music cd. Whenever the day comes for an upgrade(this hobby never ends)it will be another Denon. The only other brands to consider if your into home theater are, Integra, Yamaha, Onkyo, Marantz or Pioneer Elite.

Strength:

Undoubtfully DD, DTS and Prologic II decoding.

Weakness:

Music reproduction, at least until I can try it with a better source.

About the remote: Yes, it is unfriendly, but nothing terrible either, I had the amp up and running from the remote before actually reading the instructions. And now I even use it to control a Sony VCR that I later bought. About the power: I have not yet been able to crank up the volume control to the top when watching DVDs, so I believe it has enough power. I use B&W 601 S3 as main speakers, LCR60 centre, 303 rear, by the way, I point it out because speakers influence a lot the delivery of power. About decoding: yes, indeed, this machine is a beauty deconding DD, DTS and Prologic II. This last in fact surprises me taking old Prologic material to very near DD quality. In fact I made comparisons in a film listening to its Prologic track and DD track, and I had a very hard time finding diferences. About connections: Good enough, including a phono stage, only I wish it had more than one coaxial digital input (it has two more optical digital inputs). It also has provision for additional speakers in another room. About music: this last point is the one I am most critic, it doesn't convince me when playing music in any of the modes, whether plain stereo o Prologic II. However, I am going to change my CD player for a better one, since I suspect it may be the weak link here. So, I defer judgement in this for the time being till I listen to it with the new player.

Strength:

Enough power for efficient speakers, great sound, Dolby Digital sounds great.

Weakness:

Remote blows goats. DPL-II cinema doesn't work right. All the cool new features are forcing me to upgrade my TV and CD player now.

Great reciever. Powers my Klipsch RB-5's, RC-3 center and klipsch satellite surrounds just fine. Sounds great musically. One complaint is the the DPL-II in cinema mode doesn't seem to work. I only get sound out of the center channel. Anyone else had this problem? DPL-II in music mode works fine.

Strength:

Sounds terrific Pretty much punch for only 80w

Weakness:

No equalizer jacks An extra video in/outs wouldn't hurt Functions split between unit an remote - you should be able to use one or the other not both!

Overall the AVR-1802 has crisp and clean sound. I'm replacing a 12 yr old Sony STR-AV1070 that is by all means fried! What I miss most is the adaptor jacks the Sony had to plug in an EQ. (Even if I had the big bucks, non of the higher end models have this anymore, so sad). The only problem I'm having, and if anyone has a solution, please jump in, is that, unless I UNPLUG the DVD + optical inputs and the TV inputs, the line coming from the PC creates a hum or noise in the background. If I was only using the receiver to play exclusively from the computer it would be no big deal, but this is just annoying. This is the only reason I'm giving it a 4 in the overall rating - after listening to onkyos, marantzs & yamahas, this denon just blows them away. Otherwise it would deserve a 5.

Strength:

Audio quality, inputs

Weakness:

Loudness 80 watts per channel. Ouchh!! and of course the remote

Overall great receiver. I am very happy with it. I compared three other players in this price range, a Yamaha and Onkyo (can't recall the model numbers). By far, Denon was the best, for sound quality and options. However I figured 80 Watts / channel would be enough, Believe me it's not!! A friend of mine bought the same receiver and he has the same complaint. If you can afford to upgrade to next Denon model do it. Else I would recommend the Yamaha for the money, but it didn't sound as nice.
