Strength:

Ability to learn *any* IR signal tossed its way, battery life

Weakness:

LCD panel smudges badly, heavy

I bought this remote in December 2000 after seeing all the good reviews on it and realizing that I needed a way to consolidate the 7 remotes that I had banging around my apartment. After some time poring over the manual and about and hour to program everything I finally have the remote that tackles it all (even the air conditioner remote!)

Aside from the weaknesses I mentioned above there isn't anything that I can complain about with this remote except that it sometimes has problems picking up signals from my APEX DVD player (It would act like it had accepted the code, but the code would not be saved, a second attempt usually fixed the problem)

The macros are a nice touch as well, setting up a macro was a breeze and now it takes but one keypress to start the TV, chang the channel to the TV's input channel, start the DVD player and open the DVD tray :) All in all a fablous remote for the money.

Strength:

Controls everything, including British SkyDigiBox

Weakness:

cannot really think of any

This one does it all.I got this one as a Christmas gift for my husband. Basically because I got tired of 8 remotes cluttering our coffeetable and having to jugle 3 of them at once everytime I wanted to watch a DVD. My husband absolutely loves this remote and so do I. Set up was a breeze after reading the manual. People critize the beeping sound or the contrast of the backlit display, well you can adjust those settings as described in the manual. I also like the size, at least it does not feel flimsy and you cannot push wrong buttons because you run out of space. Also as said before this one will hardly get lost between the couch cushions. The Macros are fantastic. I can turn on everything and play DVD's and go back to TV with just a one button push. Also you can turn other buttons then the 3 system buttons into Macros. e.g if we press our CD button for 2 seconds it turns on the CD Jukebox and turns on the Amplifier at the same time with the CD sound Setting. So really if you just read the manual carefully enough and play around a little you will see how many more possibilities this remote has to offer. As for labeling the buttons..so what instead of select I now push execute etc. I consider myself intelligent enough to remember which buttons will now do what especially considering the sony hides all the unnecessary ones for the selected apliance to start with. Its definitely easier and faster then trying to find 3 remotes and trying to work all them just to watch a movie. If you are a label freak go ahead and spend 200-300$ more on a remote. I doubt that function is quite worth the price difference. So all in all it takes a little getting used to, but I think every normal person is capable of programming and using this remote with ease. For 100$ it just doesn't get better.

Strength:

Brand compatability, learning capability, large screen

Weakness:

LCD Contrast, size

First, I'd sure like to know how everyone else is buying this thing so cheaply! I paid $179 at Circuit City and some of you seem to have paid less than $100....sigh.

I really liked the set up of this remote. I've only used it a few weeks, but it's starting to become second nature already. I found the existing brand codes fairly comprehensive, with the only exception being my second DVD player, which I use to play MP3 encodes CDs. Since it's a back up unit, I didn't want to pay much and purchased an Apex unit. There was no code offered for that brand, but using the self-learning option, I was able to simply link the Apex remote to the Sony and copy over the key commands...very simple.

I'm not thrilled about the screen contrast, could be much better, but it's passable and I have found replacing the 6 remotes on my coffee table delightful. Some below asked "what is peace of mind worth?" Well, I may have paid more than most here, but I do have the peace of mind.

Strength:

I just put 14 remotes in a drawer, hopefully never to be used again......

Weakness:

None so far..

I love this product!!! It controls all of my toys, including the ones in the bedroom. Since my tv and vcr, are the same brands, in the bedroom and den, I amm able to use it for 14 seperate components. I was even able to program it for my webtv, and my Tivo!!! The manual says that you can program it for up to 12 different things, or in my case 14, but I think if you don't use the tape input, for a cassette player, then you should be able to control 13 seperate devices...

I got this on ebay from some user named MRNICEGUY for 97$. I see him selling stuff often. Out of the box this unit cotrolled everything but my reciever and digital cable box. After approx 25 min, I had it programmed to controll both. I use mostly sony ES components. The digi box is motorola (total junk thank you cox cable) and I use seperates by Parasound for pre/amp. The remote has all the required pre set touch screen buttons to not only control my pre amp but set up the 5.1 and surround sound. It will also not only control my cable box but again has all the required screen buttons to surf, use the guide info, ect. The macros function will make 16 commands. More than enough for my media room. When I upgrade it to Home theater, it will do all that I need it to and more. I am very happy w/this purchase. My wife is very happy w/the ease of operation and that the buttons have the same name commands. FYI this remote will controll 12 things. It can be programmed. It can learn and has settings for 3 seperate macros w/16 functions each. If you realy want better you will most likely need to spend about 100-250$ more. I do not think this has rf. It is only ir. LOOK ON EBAY AND SALES. DO NOT PAY FULL LIST PRICE! YOU CAN FIND ONLINE CHEAPER!!

Strength:

LCD screen, extremely customizable, price!, It will learn any IR signal that I can give it! controls 12 components!!

Weakness:

I don't have 12 components - only 4, but hey - room for future upgrades!!

All I can say about this remote is a work of art! Since I own a sony receiver, there was no troubles operating that as it controlled every part of it out the box.

My vhs is a SHARP so all i did was punch in the code for that and worked flawlessly - i just added a couple of extras by teaching the remote long play and slow mo.

Since I own a generic tv - it's a Palsonic, a rip off of panasonic - i didn't think that it could handle or learn a singnal from a less well known company. Well, the av2100 performed beatifully in learning every single command I wanted it to with the ability to customize every thing to my liking.

It was the same for the dvd player. I own an OMNI player (it's a cheap generic brand for people who don't have heaps of money but want something of good quality) and it learned every command i threw at the 2100.

The best thing about this system is the macros, I can turn all my equipment on at once in whatever order so I now don't have to fiddle around looking for all different remotes when one stroke of a button does the entire process - the longest process I have is:

1 turn on tv
2 change tv to AV1
3 turn on reveiver
4 put reveiver input to dvd
5 turn on dvd
6 open the dvd tray

The other macro is used to shut everything off and the other system function utilises the vcr instead of the dvd.

All I can say is, another winner from sony. For the price, it's a steal! and (as in my case) completly compatible to learn any function . The touchscreen is the coolest thing and many friends and family members think it's real high tech and cool. Ergonomics are excellent and the look of it is real cool. - If you need a remote to command all your equipment, looks cool, ready for add on's and is really cheap, this is the way!!

Strength:

Very Easy to learn and setup. Larger size display neutralizes button mis-hits and puts a lot of buttons on the display at once.

Weakness:

Is quite large compaired to conventional remotes, it's a plus and a negative. Button titles are not reprogrammable.

First off I'm no audio component expert by far, I just wanted something bad A@# that could once and for all control everything I got. I wanted to be able to sit back in my chair and be able to flip through football and the Red Wings while I had a game going on the X-box without doing anything but lift my finger, and There was no way I was paying $400.00 to $700.00 for any remote. So I did a little research and voila! At first at $115.00 online I thought this remote was a bit much but when I got it I was more surprised and satisfied than I think I've been with an electronic purchase in the past few years. I thought reading this manual was going to be like a novel but it was much the opposite. I had the remote out of the box and controlling everything I got within 20 mins. (thats 2 receivers, 1 TV, 1 VCR , A digital Cable Box That I could never find codes for or get a learnable remote to learn from it's remote and finally even my X-Box DVD remote which I've asked and even read in magazines no remote can learn )
That convinced me. Not one malfunction at this point either!

That Backlight

The remote was quite easy to program out of the box. I wasn't particularly happy with the presets and redefined the buttons myself which was a snap. The broad signal also means I don't have to stab at the component I need to control. This is an excellent product.

Strength:

Compatibility, flexibility, battery life, stability

Weakness:

Still looking for them...

This thing controls EVERYTHING and is easier to program than anything I've seen. My system has several brands in it and this has either had a code or been able to "learn" the item with ease every time! The backlighting is strong, the touch screen is very responsive and accurate, the original batteries have run in it since I bought it, the unit is study, and there just doesn't seem to be anything this remote can't handle in my environment. This is by far the best remote I've used!
