Strength:

Great Remote. Learning feature, completly programmable, look, back light...

Weakness:

Little large

Love the learning feature. Great buttons, touch screen is sensitive, works with everything I have and great price. To get around some things that may be missing, you can always program another button to do what u want - your just going to have to memorize.

Strength:

Very Attractive Remote
Touch Screen
Ease of Use
Pre-Sets and Learns
Macros
Low Price

Weakness:

No PC Interface
Limited space for touch screen button (cannot create unique buttons, must change what is provided)

Before spending $100-$400 on a fancy remote...one must ask themselves; "What is your piece of mind worth?" Mine is worth less than $100. This narrowed the field considerably. Among touch screens, it was between the Crisp Solutions UCommand 515, Home Logic UR362 and a few others. Because I had a Sony receiver STR-DE675, and because it was a mix on touch screen and hard buttons I chose the Sony AV2100. This remote is so simple to program because you can use the presets and learn together to customize screens. Took 20 minutes, but it is not like this remote completely replaces others though. For instance, I have a DVD-Changer and this remote has about 20 more buttons than the Sony thinks it does.
In conclusion, this doesn't do everything that a $400 remote does....but it comes pretty darn close. And for $90 looks every bit as good as any remote.

Strength:

Is programmable to learn as many functions as there are buttons on a screen.

Weakness:

Huge. I'm a small guy, and it barely fits in my hand. Makes it kind of uncomfortable to use. Hard to read LCD screen that needs to have backlighting on all the time. Non-definable text on touch screen buttons.

I used to have 7 different remotes for my home system. I had 2 "universal" remotes that didn't have some items pre-programmed and couldn't learn more than 5 functions. Damn this Motorola digital cable box!

I've been drooling whilst looking at this remote previously. However, the price kept putting me off.

Anyway, on a trip to the Sony Outlet, I noticed that they had this thing on sale for $69 refurbished! I didn't care what my wife said, I got it. :) Now, I have 1 remote control that does everything! No more clutter on the coffee table!

Strength:

Qick memory, Easy to use with other SONY equipment

Weakness:

Big

First of all this is a remote built for man. I wanted somthin that would control all my units without looking like the standard remote.I think I found it.
Well CIRCUIT CITY wanted $180.00 for this unit. I shopped around on the internet and found it for $94.00 at eCOST.com. Got it within two days.
All my units are sony so when I turned this thing on I didnt have to program nothin. Took about a half hour to adust some things to my satifaction. I heard somone say it some time to teach it. Not for me, I can press one button and turn the tv on,adust the reciever to a proper setting, turn the dvd on while the tv adjust the input.
The ony thing I cant get used to is the beep you get when you press the buttons.
And yes you can see it at night and the backlight works great.
If you own SONY equipment, this is a must have.......If this is this good cant wait to upgrade my units and get the PRONTO.

Strength:

Good Looking, has a nice feel to it, Macros, controls many units, etc.....

Weakness:

Wish the back light came on anytime you touched a key, wish backlight was brighter

I think that this is the best buy you can find out there for the Money!! I got mine at ecost for $99+ 12.95 for Fedx next day air! It was here at work when I came in that next morning!! Most of the other universal remotes out there ie Pronto or Marantz, will run you about $300-500 and that is quite a few DVD's and CD's in my book. This puppy does what it is supposed to do and it does it well for under $120 to your door. Thats better than a sharp stick in the eye any day.
I must say that I am very happy with this remote. It looks good sitting there on my coffe table, (MUCH better than the six remotes I had scattered around on the table that it replaced!)it is pretty easy to program and I love being able to hit one button now and it turns on my TV, turns on my receiver, turns on my DVD player, sets all units to their proper functions, all I have to do is push play(and actually you could program it to do that for you too if you wanted to!!)and sit back and enjoy the movie. And now my wife is happy because she can operate our humble HT with one remote, she doesn't have to call me at work anymore and ask how to get the DVD player to work or how to get the satelitte to work!! For me this remote is great, get ya one you wont regret it!!!!!!

Strength:

Indiglo style backlighting, loooks good, nice profile for tabletop use

Weakness:

Lighting does not automatically come on when touch screen is used. Isn't that what the sleep mode would have been good for?... Not being able to hide 'learned' functions. Macro speed not adjustable to provide desirable results.

Unless you have a complete Sony system, look elsewhere. Spend the extra little bit to get a system with more control. One of the biggest beefs I have with this product is the learning. Maybe I expect tto much, but how hard could it be to as to be able to hide the controls that I teach. That is the whole idea of that 'button' on the top left of the control. Like others have also mentioned the whine from the backlighting is annoying. After spending $200CAD I kick myself for trying to save a couple of dollars.
Now I have wasted that money, I think I will through this thing down the driveway, maybe run it over too. :) Then maybe I will send it back to Sony and see what they say, when I ask for it to be repaired under warranty.

I am looking forward to the Pronto unit by Phillips in the new year. As for Sony, they have been sliding downhill for too long, now I know not to bother anymore.
B.T.W. My DVP560D has also been retired due to problems.

Strength:

Weakness:

Has anyone else had this problem. I just received another unit in the mail today. We will see what happens.
The only good part is J & R has been great in dealing ewith the problems. I have called Sony and they are at a loss.

Strength:

Learning Functions, Macros, Price

Weakness:

Display can be hard too see under bright light and needs a auto mode for the night light.

Basicly I was looking for a remote to control my equipment, like verybody else I wanted too clean up my remote clutter.

I purchased this remote keeping in mind I will return it and purchase the pronto. Basicly I wanted to see how a learning remote worked beforwe i Ordered one online so I went too my local store and purchased the Sony AV2100 since they did not have a pronto.

Too my amazament the Sony remote was very easy too use and had more then enough buttons and macros. A month later I still have the Sony Av2100, and decided I wold hold off on the pronto until the sony broke.

There are many good remotes out there, and as of now I think there are about 4 that are in the same price and function range as the Sony. But I can say, I believe you will be satisfied with this remote. The pronot is however in another class by itself.

Warranty?

I haven't had a chance to try this out but after reading reviews it sounds like it will do everything I want it to. Unfortunately when I went to check on the warranty, Best Buy didn't have any posted and there wasn't any info on the box. I wanted to open the box to see but they said I had to buy it first. Well, it turns out Sony is now only covering the unit for 30 days. I think that sucks. Thirty days for a complex sensitive piece of equipment is terrible. When I checked the unit at a couple of stores on the internet they list the warranty as 1 year parts, 90 days labor. Sony's web site doesn't list the warranty info (the links on the page don't work.)
I intend to return the unit (after I open it for Christmas) and buy it from e-cost, it's $95 cheaper, even with shipping and handling added I'll still save a lot.

Strength:

Does what it's intended to do. Looks very Cool

Weakness:

Kinda large( but I like that), DSP? for what brand, model?

Works great with all my gear. The DSP won't control my Sony receiver, I guess Sony doesn't have that figured out yet. Macros and learning makes things very easy. Press the CD key and hold for 2 seconds, the receiver and cd player power on and start playing. Press and hold TV, and the tv, satellite and receiver all turn on, tv goes to the right input, receiver goes to the right input and there you go. Same thing for the VCR and DVD. I am the Hero of the house once again. No more phone calls at work "I've got two kids that wanna watch tv and this @#$%$#*&^% surround sound SOB won't turn on!". Life is good.
For the backlight problem some are concerned about, check out www.remotecentral.com. If you can solder, there's a fix.
