AH! LS Noise Killer Others

AH! LS Noise Killer Others

DESCRIPTION

The AH! LS Noise Killer is a small parallel-filter which is connected to the terminals on your speaker. In case of biwiring connect to the tweeterterminals. The immediate effect can be described best as "taming" the tweetersection by eliminating the high-frequency ringing, resulting in a smooth and clean reproduction of the musicsignal. The AH! LS Noise Killers are available with bare wire connection, spades and bananas.

Strength:

Smooths out high freqencies, retains air & dynamics, improves tranparency. Inexpensive tweak.

I ordered these for my Thiel 2.3's which are frequently characterized as being bright and very revealing. I was impressed with the results. They did smooth out the high frequency edginess without altering the air or dynamics in the music. As a result they did seem to lower the floor noise. I can now listen to recordings that I used to avoid. I would imagine that many other speakers with a similar tonal balance would benefit as well. You could send alot of money on other components trying to achieve the same taming of high frequencies. Strength:

Controls sibilance and harshness as advertised.

Weakness:

Robs the sound of air, transparency, and extension.

Price was relatively cheap so I gave them a try. While it did smooth out the highs, it also robbed the sound of air and transparency. I felt that the tradeoff was simply not worth it and have not used them since. Lesson learned: Address room acoustics and speaker placement FIRST to control sibilance and harshness before trying these. Even though the price is cheap, who needs a pair of these lying around the house collecting dust? These are for sale so let me know if you want them.

Strength:

May work on other systems? Inexpensive.

Weakness:

They compromize the sound on my system by colouring the upper midrange and reducing detail and air. Sibilance was not improved. My theory is they do remove 'noise' but they also remove other 'good' charateristics of sound.

Based on everything that I read, I really wanted these suckers. My audio had become progressively brighter and brighter sounding as I added components to my system over time. While I loved the detail, air and timbre of the sound, sometimes the highs just became too much to handle, especially with recordings that had sibilant vocals to start with (like the Eagles 'Hell Freezes Over' CD for instance). Turning down the treble control on my preamp just didn't give me the end results I needed (it sacrificed too much of the sound along with the highest highs). So, from what I had heard, the noise killers seemed like the inexpensive miracle remedy I was looking for. Well, to make a long story short(er), I ordered the suckers, hooked them up and was... not sure. At first I thought, maybe it did sound cleaner, less 'noisy' in the upper range, but then was also somehow lacking in something. Or was there some sort of coloration being added to the sound. And the harsh 'esses' and 'tsss' were still coming through while the upper midrange of the vocals seemed to project right in my face as if certain frequencies were being emphasized. And the music overall was somehow missing the usual liveliness and richness. After extended testing over the next few weeks with the noise killers connected and disconnected, I decided to leave them off permanently, somewhat comforted by the fact that I didn't spend an arm an a leg on them. Maybe they work for some people on their systems, but they don't work for me. Wow the best 50 bucks I have ever spent on audio. I was ready to sell my triangle Cellius because of treble harshness. Now no way. this has eliminated about 80 percent of my treble problems. They did have a short break-in.but in a few days they worked wonders. some say they in prove the bass as well but I think that its just that you are no longer distracted by the harsh treble and can now hear the bass better. What ever reason and what ever they elininate they do work. If you have loud, harsh bitting, or ringing treble you need to try this product. you may also want to invest in some mattress foam eggcrate and put it beside and on the wall behind the speakers. This made a big inprovement in the sound stage. My system is Triangle Cellius speakers With AH ls noise killers in the tweeter inputs. Strength:

tames bright highs on my system, cleaner sound

Weakness:

None!

I took a chance on these based upon reviews here and elsewhere... They were right, these things work!!! I was amazed! My Paradigm Studio 100''''s have always been a bit on the bright side (despite nice upstream stuff). This brightness manifested itself as harsh sounding sibilants- s and t''''s... This made all but the most well recorded CD''''s sound harsh and irritating. These Noise killers, without any burn in made a remarkable difference! Gone were 95% of the sibilants from all but the brightest sounding recordings... I suspect that some brightness is unavoidable if the recording is bright. The highs are cleaner and clearer without harshness. I have spent more than I care to ever admit to to alleviate this brightness, and I kick myself for not purchasing these many many dollars ago (laughs).... For 50 bucks, this is the best thing I have bought for my system. Give Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio a call, he is a pleasure to work with. Weakness:

Could not detect any in my system.

Did not notice any effect in my system. I was hoping that these would tame the brightness or ringing my system has with high piano notes. No such luck. Could not hear any degrading of sound with these or any sonic improvements. I think the key is in the engineering of the recording not the play back system as I have other CD's that are fine.

Yamaha RXV2092 as preamp

Strength:

Chaep, easy to install

In their relentless quest for the best sound possible, the friendly people at Ah! have come up with yet another useful little device. I took the time to test it and I have to say that it works fine. It really does tame the highs effectively. It smoothes out that brittle harshness of the high frequencies and helps getting rid of the irritating ring or ping effect associated with CD sound reproduction. The Tjoeb was already pretty good in this respect, but with the LS Noise Killer, it's even better. More so, it does it without compromising the transparency and the clarity of sound. Meaning, it doesn't sound like a filter.

Works fine with the Tjoeb, I wonder what it could do for other CD players.

Strength:

Eliminated annoying high frequency tizziness.
Improved the soundstage.
Improved the overall sound.

Weakness:

Required removal of the tweeters to access the tweeter terminals. Required soldering in place in parallel across the tweeter terminals.

The Ah! LS Noisekiller is a tiny two wire component intended to be wired in parallel across the terminals of a tweeter. These units are supplied in pairs for use in stereo systems. If the tweeters are inaccessible, each unit can be wired in parallel across the entire loudspeaker. I used mine across the tweeters.

I obtained these as part of an Ah! Tjoeb CD player package from Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio. Looking at their miniscule package, I did not expect much.

Wow! What a surprise. These things really work, removing excessive tweeter brightness, improving the sound stage, and improving the overall sound.

At $50 per pair, just do it.

Kevin at Upscale has been a big help, providing the wonderful Ah! Tjoeb 4000 CD player, advising on tubes, and providing hard-to-get tubes. He has made a huge difference in my listening world. Now I understand why women fall in love with their obstetricians. My audio system is my baby. Kevin delivered!

Has tamed the high-frequency ringing that frequented my B&W CDM1 speakers.

Weakness:

I'm sold on these babies as one of the cheapest, most effective tweak out there. I used to have a real problem with my speakers ringing on the upper end at high volumes. These things have completley tamed them.

Also, for those that have the Ah Tjoeb! line, be sure to upgrade your tubes to Amperex 7308. These were recommended by Kevin Deal and have made for an amazing difference in clarity on the upper end and a much richer bottom end.

Strength:

Improves clarity, reduces externalities, helps neutralize my bright system

Weakness:

Still doesn't totally make up for my lack of research and time spent before purchasing components

Since tuition keeps going up, I had to think of some creative ways to get the most out of my HT until graduation.

While I was looking for info on CD players, I ran across these guys. They sounded like exactly what I needed to attempt to reduce the harshness that is a result of my combination of Paradigm Monitor 7 v.2's (naturally a little bright) and a Yamaha receiver (extremely bright).

I read the reports on this site and decided to go ahead and try them out. I placed the order early on a Sunday morning and received an e-mail from Kevin at Upscale letting me know that they would be shipped out the next day. I was already excited about the customer service.

They showed up right on schedule 2 days later. I connected them to the high-end terminals on my Monitors, sat back, and enjoyed. I immediately noticed a (positive) difference. They, of course, didn't eliminate all of the harshness. But for $50, the difference they made in my clarity and imaging is unbelievable. The best way I can describe what these guys did is with an analogy: Imagine staying in a smoky room for several days. After some time, you probably won't even notice the haziness. But then, step outside into fresh, clear air and you can instantly see a difference. These things removed a layer of "haziness" from my speakers that I didn't even realize was there.

I highly recommend trying these. My experience with Upscale Audio was very impressive as well. I plan on ordering another set and trying one on my center channel.

Unfortunately (?), I will still be replacing my Yamaha receiver next week.
