Strength:

Best analog picture I've seen

Weakness:

Slight discoloration (still) on small portion of bottom of screen when watching black and white movies

I wanted to amend the review that I wrote 11 months ago about the Toshiba 32AX60. This is the cleanest and best looking picture I think I've ever seen on an analog TV. Now that I've had a chance to set the picture controls using a calibration DVD (highly recommended by the way. The $15-$20 "Sound and Vision Home-Theater Set-Up DVD" is a great, inexpensive way to calibrate your TV, and the rest of your home theater), I am still in awe of how accurately the set reproduces colors and maintains solid sharpness with virtually no video noise. The discoloration of the screen during viewing of bright images, that I mentioned before, is only slightly visible now while watching black and white movies. This really only happens when the contrast is set to high. Since this effect bothered me before (while watching color movies) I went back to Tweeter (where I bought it) and brought along my DVD player and the DVD's that were causing the problem. We tried every combination (different TVs, different DVD players) and found the discoloration was apparent all the time. Hence, I don't believe the set was causing this problem. The set has an immaculate picture and if you can find one left at a lower price, buy it without hesitation.

Beautiful picture

Weakness:

Discoloration of screen during viewing of bright images

This is my second 32AX60 in a month. I love the picture quality of the TV during regular viewing and with DVD's. However, I've had a problem with the fact that when watching DVD's that contain scenes of bright images (i.e. bright skies)the screen will start to get dark/yellow in that area (mine was on the top right corner)if the image remains on the screen too long. The effect leaves a shadow there for quite a while until the TV is shut off and had a chance to cool down. The effect doesn't appear to be permanent (I hope!). The one I currently own doesn't do it too bad (only on one movie or two) but the one I returned did it very quickly and it looked terrible. I called the place I bought it and they sent out a service technician. He told me the tube was warped, so I had the TV replaced. The new one unfortunately does the same thing on a different area of the screen but not nearly to the degree it did it before. To be fair, this pretty much only happens if I'm watching a DVD with the contrast set pretty high and on the "cool" or "medium" temperature setting (which is rare), but I don't think it should be doing it at all. I can't comment too much about the sound (I use my main speakers through my receiver) but I do find it funny that you have to turn the volume up to about 18 before you really hear any sound at all. The other day I listened through the speakers and was impressed with their surround sound projection.
Overall, I like the TV a lot. My main concern is picture quality (as opposed to a lot of features which it also has) so I'm still debating if the light darkening on the occasional DVD is worth my $700. I've had a good experience with JVC reliability and quality in the past. This is my first Toshiba TV. Overall, I'd recommend the set as long as this problem doesn't exist on yours

Strength:

Great picture, sound, and multiple av inputs

Weakness:

lack of ability to turn tv speakers off and yet adjust volume of stereo receiver with tv remote, this simply drives me nuts!

I first bought the JVC and I liked everything about it except the fact you couldn't adjust color temp like on the Toshiba. I've had a JVC27" for a few years that I love and It was a tough decision to go for a Toshiba instead. The Toshiba has a few more bells and whistles which as it turns out, I probably don't need. If you don't plan to hook this to a stereo and there can't be many of you out there, then this tv has no faults that I can see. I had hoped to hook this up to a Toshiba 6-head SVHS VCR W808. I bought one and the picture and sound were excelent until I tried to record my first show, and in that case it would not record the sound no matter what. Also the remotes buttons did not all work. This worries me a little bit as to whether Toshiba's quality control is as bad as some people have said. The TV says it was made in America and the VCR in China so hopefully us Americans know what we're doing. GO USA!!!

Strength:

Picture Quality, Ease of Menus, Features

Weakness:

Sound--> noise

Although the picture is excellent and the color seems perfect, I have had some trouble with the sound. When listening during the late evening in a quiet room, there is a slight background hiss from the internal speakers, if the volume is low. Normally, if the sound is turned up, it is masked. However, even is the sound is turned up, during quiet scenes it may be audible. This is not a PROBLEM if you are using an amp and surrpund sound, but it is annoying when listening to a program on the internal speakers. All the same model in the store have the same problem, although maybe not as bad. The JVC equivalent has a lower noise level. This is a constant hiss that does not increase when the volme is turned up. A call to Toshiba says that this is "normal" in this series. Awaiting a service call to see if mine is worse than average.

Strength:

Overall picutre and sound quality.

Weakness:

Menu partially covers screen when adjusting color/tint.

I was looking for a 32" TV with PIP (to calm my wife so that she is sure she doesn't miss any part of a show if I surf during commercials) at a reasonable price. I didn't want to shell out the cash for a flat screen. The Toshiba simply blew away the competition.

I did a fair amount of research both online and in the stores to see what was available. I wound up looking at the Sony, JVC and Toshiba in the final compairson. The Sony had a wonderful picture and features, but the price was about $200 higher than Toshiba or JVC. In the final comparison between Toshiba and JVC it was almost a tossup. I chose the Toshiba because it seemed to offer just a little more for the money.

I was originally going to buy the 32A60, but upgraded to the 32AX60 (Cinema Series) when the prices were only $10 apart. I like the front A/V inputs (they make hooking up the camcorder much easier) and the picture tube seemed just a hair darker when doing a side-by-side comparison. . I also purchased the 4205 Cinema Series DVD changer to match. Together, the system provides stunning DVD picture quality.

I've read that some Toshibas have had difficulty with ghosting between cable channels when not using a box. I've noticed no such problem. It has been a great set so far!

Strength:

Great picture and I like the P.I.P feature.

Weakness:

Poor sound and lack of variable audio output and sound leveling.

My set is model 32A60 but I am told there is no real difference between it and the 32AX60. POSITIVES: Excellent picture and the 2 tuner P.I.P feature is nice(we'll see how much I use it). NEGATIVES: 1)In "simulated surround sound" mode the sound was poor--echoey and tinney.I turned that mode off. 2)Lacks variable audio output--so when I routed the audio through my stereo receiver, I have to use a separate remote to control the sound through my stereo speakers---a real bummer. 3)Does not have the "sound leveling" feature even though the salesman assured me it did---so some programs or commercials really blast you and and you have to scramble for the remote to lower the sound level---or in my case 2 remotes(see item 2). 4)The manual says I can turn the "closed captioning" feature off so it does not activate when I mute the audio---I have not been able to turn it off even though the instructions are very simple. BOTTOM LINE: You get what you pay for and if I had it to do over again I would probably pop for a few more bucks and be sure I was getting the features I found important. You have to be careful with these salespeople---they will tell you things they don't know----and after you get a huge 125LB. set home--unpacked--and all hooked up---you might decide to reconcile some things that you will regret later on. Live and learn.
