Strength:

Picture was incredible. Controls was good. 16 x 9 mode is awesome for viewing DVD movies

Weakness:

Like everyone says it's very heavy. It weights around 240 pounds. Price is decent. But you can get it for less than 1499 as stated at Best Buy. I got mine from Best Buy for $1399 during a sale.

When I first saw this TV in Best Buy. I just had to have it. The DVD video they had playing was incredible. The picture was some to see. So I bought it from Best Buy for 1399 plus S/H. Get the insurance for an extra $119. The warranty on the Wega is only for 90 days. And since you are already spending all that money, you might as well get the insurance. It took a week to be delivery. Buy a good stand because of the weight of this beast (240 pounds). After I turned it on. I noticed grainy cable. Since it's a great tv, the cable looks bad for some channels and great for others. I looked around and most people had the similar problem. I'm going to get digital cable or Directv when it becomes available. If anyone had a improvement with digital cable or directv, please email me. Thank you. I put componet video ( monster cables). The DVD is incredible with the 16 X9 format that the wega can do. It's awesome. The picture is sooooo alive. I guess that's why Best Buy plays DVD and not cable. Overall it's a great tv. Also, to get the best picture use Video Essentials. It's a great DVD that help my picture get even better., Also with the playstation, it looks great. Email me if you have any questions on this product. Thanks

Outstanding picture

I was originally going to buy a 32 inch wega but the 36 inch model seemed to be so much bigger. Bargain hard with your local store & you can get a good deal on this TV. I am very happy with this purchase. Definitely have this set delivered.

This is a follow-up to my reviews of this TV. Sony did verify the rolling white bar problem. This occurs when having a cable/sat box hooked up with S-Video while watching a DVD hooked up with componet. When watching the DVD, you can see rolling white bar moving from the right to left. When you unplug the S-cable from the cable/sat box (or turn the box off) it will go away. I tried the Panasonic CT-32HX40 for two weeks with the same set-up with no problems. Lady at Sony Srvice said that this problem is known and is beeing looked to be fixed in the next release version the the Wega sets. My set was in service twice and the problem coud was not fixed. I talked to the store where I bought it from, and are going to exchange it for the Panasonic CT-36HX41 when it becomes avaliable next month. The Panasonic sets cost a few hundered more, but the picture is much better than this or the XBR400 sets. This will be the last Sony set I buy for a long time.

Strength:

Overall picture quality, control versatility

Weakness:

minor defects with component inputs

At a discount price of $1350 it was a bargain with the 16:9 squeeze mode built-in. (Although the manual says it is not available on this model).
Overall, a great picture in resolution, color, and geometry.
With DVD component input and a black background (no signal) the right side of the screen is lighter than the left. So far I have not seen this to have a detrimental effect on a movie image.
Also in component mode, there is a very faint vertical line, about an inch wide, that runs from left to right continuously. It took me about 2 movies before I even noticed it. Now I can notice it but only when I happen to think about it. (Different component cables makes no
difference).
I have not tried to use the S-Video input for DVDs yet. I will see if I notice the same symptoms.
Otherwise, I can not really fault this set. I listen to audio through my system, so I can not say much about the sound.
I am about ready to run the VE and calibrate it. I may take it one step further and have a pro set the gray scale. I would be interested in others who have direct views and calibrated with Avia or VE, and then had a tech over to set the gray scale, etc.
If you did, was there a significant improvement? I have seen some incredible images from DVD that tend to tell me that this TV does not need much tweaking.
Being able to control the picture in any mode is great! It is also great the settings remain in memory. However, it would have been better to add numerical settings to the adjustments.

UPdate to review:

This is an update to my post a few days ago. A SoundAdvice Tech came to the house last Thursday. I showed him the list of problems and he confirmend that the unit is defective. It is going to be picked up today for service and was told that we would know by the end of the week what the definate problem(s) are and if it can be fixed. I have seen the new Panasonic CT-32HX40 in BestBuy and CircuitCity (the 36" was not on display), but from what I can tell the picture is far better than this tv and the XBR400 sets.

Strength:

No doubt, one of the best pictures around!!! Sony products most definitely are not the best priced, but this product is worth the money. Bad cable signals are a problem, but with a line conditioner, the picture improves dramatically. Best asthetics for a television. DVDs are absolutely amazing!!! Flat screen should sell anyone.

Weakness:

Not aware of any so far. Again, not a true Sony fan, but haven't found any weaknesses with this television. I disagree that it's weight is a weakness. Like one reviewer said, the weight definitely adds a little protection from theft.

To summarize, I would have to say first that this set most certainly plays DVDs as well as any non-HDTV compatibe television currently available. Great results without any calibrating. I am so impressed with this set, that I have yet to run the Video Essentials DVD on it. I am truly satified with its capabilities. Yeah, bad cable signals are certainly evident, but a line conditioner should more than fix the problem. After all, you could have this problem with any "higher end" television. The price has gone down on this set since I purchased mine last year, so I highly recommend this television. One suggestion: Definitely purchase from an authorized dealer--in case there are any problems. Nothing wrong with trying to get a decent price, just remember that it is always better to purchase from an authorized dealer. Anyone who purchases this television should be very satisfied with their purchase--at least I am. Kudos to Audioreview for allowing us to share information on audio/video equipment!!! It will always be my first source for information!!

Overall picture quality Versatility

Out of the box, it's an impressive television. It's modern styling which others are just starting to mimic, set's it aside from most TVs.
This is lowest model of the 36 inchers, but for lack of a few features demonstrates state of the art right up the Wega line until you get to the XBR series.
(While not truly HDTV ready, the XBR gives you a glimpse of true digital video and progressive scan, with compatible DVD players.)
Even this basic model has a very unique menu system that remembers settings for different modes.
The 4 viewing modes offer a great deal of versatility but I found myself settling on Movie mode for DVD viewing, and Standard for viewing satellite broadcasts.
Being an enthusiast, I got the service manual and did a few additional tweaks of my own, and a video calibration disk to adjust brightness and picture, as well as color and tint as accurately as possible.
That's something I recommend everyone do to get maximum enjoyment of their display, but even without that, this remains a nice testimony to modern technology.
It's just too bad that Sony can't see giving a full 1 year labor warranty (instead of 90 days) for the price one has to pay to indulge in that technology. But it's still worth it. I got mine for $1499 at YourInsider.com

I recieved my component video cables yesterday and had a chance to test them out with a couple of DVD's. I have both the component cables (Video 4) and the S-video cable (Video 1) plugged into the back of the Wega at the same time, and have not seen any kind of "white scrolling vertical bar" at all, as others had suggested below. So maybe those people just had defective sets.

One possible theory I came up with is that maybe this problem is caused if a signal is actually being sent through both the S-video and component at the same time. My reciever (Pioneer D-608) has "S-Video switching", so all componets that use S-video go through the reciever first, and then to the TV. So when I switch to "DVD/LD" on the reciever, the only video signal going to the TV would be the component cables. As opposed to using the DVD/Component cables while your cable/satelite reciever is still sending a signal through the S-video input.

This is an update to my prior post. Its FIXED now folks, the vertical white problem is all but history on my set. I have both s-video and component video hooked at the same time.

Basically, what the service rep told me that there is a grounding issue between the video sources. He came with a picture from sony telling him which electrodes had to be grounded inside the tv-board. He had to turn my tv around and remove the back casing. It all took about 20 minutes and its working great now.

Thank you for all the folks who kept posting updates to this problem..
