I am reluctantly parting with this set after a decade of exceptional and reliable performance but the time has finally come to move to a large plasma. (See http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/ele/1477822562.html)

Unless viewed side-by-side against a modern HDTV, one might think it HD. The picture is sharp and bright with excellent contrast; the colors are vivid and balanced; and the audio is very good (though I use a home theater sound system now). I used to really enjoy the high-end PIP features (before moving to a cable box). I still use the flexible PIP occasionally to view two different sources.

Contrary to some reports, this set has never given me a lick of trouble nor have I ever been disappointed in its picture or audio performance. It's only real downside has been its weight (175 lbs.).

Strength:

Picure quality/flat screen(now obsolete), ok sounding speakers, picture effects(sports, movies, etc), number of component hookups

Weakness:

High cost, no resale value, obsolete picture quality, heavy(175lbs), bulky, died after 7yrs of ave. service, reliability

first generation flat screen crt tv performs well. Problem is, just died on me after just 7 yrs of average service. I expected a longer life term than this for the price I paid. Overall, the picture quality was ahead of its time when it came out but has been surpassed by $600 tv's within the last 3yrs. Heavy and bulky. I tried to get an estimate to fix it and minimum cost would be around $200 plus depending on what and how it was found. Not worth the cost to repair.

Customer Service

ok from sony, but authorized repair shop sucks....long wait time, high cost to repair, heavy tv is not easy to lug into repair shop.

Way too heavy but it's got a picture to die for. Fullscreen DVD's look as nice as looking out of my apartment window.

Brilliant picture! "Normal" TV now look severly dated as I am used to my flat screen WEGA. Sound is surprisingly full (for a Sony TV).

Strength:

Features, picture with DVD

Weakness:

Picture with cable feed

I bought this TV and brought it home on a Friday. I tried it out with DVD first and the picture looked pretty good. But when I hooked it up to cable, the picture was bad. It was very grainy and occasionally the picture would move around. I took it back and got the discontinued KV32XBR100.

The geometry on these sets are good. The line doubled HDTV WS version looks much better then the others. I am fairly dissapointed in the lack of 16x9 switch, the aliasing, and the blacks. It seems to have a high black level cut off and with out an extremely high end source the tv looks edgy and garbled. The colors looked fine out of the box but nithing to brag about. The flat screen is very nice. I feel these are expensive, feature lacked TVs, that come in only slightly above average against direct view sets. It seems Sony had a nice little innovation with these, but they look strange and they're overpriced.I do hear they're coming down in price though...

Good sound, good features, and most important... Awesome picture!!! Spent about $400 more for the XBR model but well worth it. The picture is sharp! The black is black. The screen is flat.
I've owned this tv set for 2 years and it's performed flawlessly, and a great match for my DVD and DirectTV

Just received this beauty. By far the best TV I have ever owned. It is huge and very heavy (you'll need help moving this one around your apartment!). The picture and sound quality is excellent.

I would just like to incorporte an aqustation if i may. This Sony XBR is single handedly the best television that I have stolen yet. When I ripped it off, the salesman said this would be the best t.v. to robb. I brought it home, and through in DVT called Blade. Let me tell you this was the bestest picture I have ever seen in my life. I highly recommend this tv because its pimp it 18K silver paint.
Its great
