Strength:

Perfect picture, almost a three dimensional quality of picture on DVDs

Weakness:

The noise it makes from the degaussing procedure at startup

I must have got a good one. The picture is perfect and it has been reliable from day one. 32" TVs have gotten a lot cheaper since I bought this but I think it is worth the price I paid. DVDs are crystal clear and my dish network channels look almost as good. I haven't used the speakers so I can't comment on that. I think the picture is just as good as the subsequent HD ready televisions and it was a lot less expensive. But of course it's not HD ready.

Customer Service

Thank goodness I haven't had to use it

Strength:

Great Picture, great looks

Weakness:

Shoddy build quality

I’m surprised that I am the first to write a review for this set. I bought this set to use as a SD TV in my living room. I already have a HD set in my home theater and decided that for the time being I wanted to get one for SD viewing. I know (and most others do as well ) that Sony offers some of the best direct view CRT sets on the market. This TV lives up to the expectations and performs well with my older Sony DVD player (S-VID only) and Pioneer LD player. It also does great with SD cable. It has the typical Sony flaws, too heavy and limited inputs (one S-VID, one component) but it also had the standard Sony pluses as well (great sound and great picture). Straight out of the box it comes well calibrated, not perfect but in my opinion it didn’t need an ISF calibration. Now to the very bad part, Sony sets are hit and miss in the quality dept. If you get a good one it will last for many years, if you get a bad one it’s game over, you might as well buy another set. I worked at an authorized Sony dealership for years and have seen this many times. Luck has it that my set is defective. The power supply started making a VERY loud intermittent whine that could only be remedied by turning the set off for 10-15 min. This came after the warranty for labor (a crappy 90 days) and I tried to have the set fixed. To do this you must use a Sony authorized service center. The closest one to me…60 miles. Long story shot, the tech came out, the TV didn’t whine at the time (like I said before, it was intermittent) and I was stuck with a $160 bill. Needless to say I will not be doing that again. I will use the TV for another year or so, throw it out and count my losses. No more Sony TV’s for me ever. If they work it’s great, if they don’t it’s a nightmare. MY 32” Proscan bought in 1998 is still chugging along, it took the Sony only 6 moths to have problems. To me that speaks volumes.
