Strength:

clarity and sound are good for the price...sale of $400

Weakness:

need to be able to add "digital cable box" code to the universal remote.

I liked the picture clarity and sound, but had problems w/ the features to work with digital cable. The Guide+ and the PIP did not work, even configuring the VCR as one of the tuners.

Strength:

Lots of features for the price.

Weakness:

Poor picture tube

I've had 3 of these now. The first 2 had terrible moire patterns on the screen that distracted from broadcast TV viewing and absolutely ruined letterboxed movies, since the pattern was more noticeable with a darker background.

The 3rd one had the same problem, but to a much lesser degree, enough that I could ignore it. However, it has 2 new problems: 1. it buzzes constantly after it warms up, so much so that I can hear it over normal TV volume; 2. there are occasional bright flashes (like camera flashes going off across from you in an arena at night) every time I try to watch anything through the S-video input.

I have tried to find one of these that's satisfactory, since I was able to find it for $499 in a local store. Even with price matching at other stores in the area, I haven't been able to find one without a problem or two.

Avoid it.

Strength:

None detectable.

Weakness:

Adaptability, picture quality, sound quality.

VERY poor quality. So inferior to other models in this range there is no savings, and with the high performance of machines in the $650-700 range, it's REALLY not worth any savings.

Strength:

nice picture, built in speakers are above average, all around good bargain for the price.

Weakness:

BUZZ!!!

I'm on my second one of these right now. I exchanged it the first time around due to an annoying buzz from inside the chassis. I thought it might be due to some interference, and I went crazy determining this was not the cause (isolating the TV from all other components, making sure my outlets were properly grounded, etc). I concluded I must have a defective set, but the second one I picked up has the same problem. This is the first place I've seen this problem mentioned, and I'll be bringing the set back for a different brand.

Strength:

It was cheap for a 32"

Weakness:

Too many to list

The only reason I bought this atrocity was that I got it dirt cheap- the store I work for sold it to a customer, it blew up the second day, and I bought it after it had been repaired as "B" stock.

I also have Toshiba and Zenith TVs in the house, and the RCA is by far the poorest performer- picture is blurry and fuzzy, sound is at best mediocre, and the set was serviced twice in the 90 day warranty period for the same problem- it would lose all brightness in the picture (it's held up OK since- about 6 months- but, if it goes again, I'll toss it out). Fortunately for me, it's a bedroom set, so it gets little use- if I want to really watch TV, I watch my Toshiba- best set I've ever owned.

The people I feel sorry for are the people who assume they're getting something good because it says RCA- we regularly advertise this set for $499, and people come in for them in droves. Fortunately, most of them we're able to sell something decent for just a couple of bucks more (going to a comparable JVC 32" set, for instance, is a mere $30 more, and the performance and quality difference is night and day), but as my employer doesn't believe in "bait and switch", if a person really wants the set, we'll sell it with no argument at all. I have no sympathy for these people who've been told what the score is- cheap is as cheap does, and in this life, you get what you pay for.

Thomson Multimedia, the current owner of the RCA name for electronics, should be ashamed at how they've prostituted a grand old name.

Strength:

Lots of features for the price.

Weakness:

Soft picture; loud buzz from set, often louder than the audio.

The constant buzzing from the picture tube drove me crazy & I returned it. I have a 27" RCA that does the same thing & have read about others with the same problem, so I decided not to get another RCA.

Strength:

Features, value.

Weakness:

No component video inputs.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I haven't experienced the problems the other reviewers have had with this set. In fact, I couldn't be more pleased with it. I'm using it with a Sony S530D dvd player, and a Sony STRDE635 receiver with KLH surround sound speakers and sub-woofer. The dvd picture through the s-video is excellent. It is very clear and clean on my test dvd's (The Matrix, Saving Pvt. Ryan). Also, although not as good as the surround speakers, the built-in sound system on the tv is very adequate and above average I'd say. Guide+ is a pretty cool feature and once you've used it, you'll love it. Picture on my cable (sorry folks...haven't switched to satellite yet ;-) ) is also very good. Overall I think it's a great set and I'm extremely happy with it. If you're looking for a starter set for a home theater this could be the one for you.
