Strength:

Strong comb filter, great sound, nearly flat screen, cheap buy

Weakness:

No front A/V inputs, no component inputs

I bought this TV as an "open box" purchase at Best Buy. I picked it up for $360 without a manual or a remote. I've since ordered the remote for $28.

I was deciding between this set and an 32" RCA that had all the same features and Guide Plus. I went with the Philips because the picture looked better(better resolution) than the RCA brand.

The Surround sound on the TS3259C is surprisingly good. There is a marked difference between this set and the Zenith I was using previously. The 5" speakers give an extremely "full" sound that has plenty of volume to boot. And since I don't currently have a home theater system hooked up to the TV, the sound quality is a big bonus.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good quality TV for a startup-intermediate level Home theater system. The lack of component inputs, and PIP aren't a big deal for me. For serious Audiophiles they might be.

Strength:

Easy to use. Fairly affordable. Several good picture presets. Good choice for those home-theater enthusiasts on a budget.

Weakness:

Make sure you get a 2000-model or above. Older models have unsheilded A/V inputs which result in gray bars over a DVD or VCR picture source. No component input.

Let's get the bad out of the way first: One thing that almost sinks this set is the unshielded A/V inputs on the back of the set, which results in gray bars over your picture when using your DVD or VCR through the inputs. S-video input is affected in the same way. The coax input is unaffected in this way, so cable TV will look fine. There is hope, though it will cost you if you're TV isn't under warranty. Take it to a service center and request part # 483531057494. This will fix the problem, but you'll pay at least a hundred bucks for the parts and labor. On the plus side, this set has several features that will satisfy the home theater nut on a budget. The picture presets are great, as you can choose from sports, weak signal, movies, multimedia (my favorite as it makes DVDs look GREAT), and personal (which is the customizalbe setting). The sound is just okay. When there is deep bass my right speaker hums. This is of little concern as I run most of my audio through a reciever anyway. The lack of a component output may turn off some people, but I find the S-input (coupled with the multimedia preset) to be more than adequate. If you can avoid the problems I noted, then you will get your money's worth from this set. I would say anything under $500 is a fair price.

Features/cost ratio; picture clarity

Excellent TV for the money. If you don't need or want PIP then this is the TV for you. Sharp picture, good features. I bought this TV to bridge the gap until HDTV comes down in price. Good set of I/O selections. (2In, 1Out)
Most other brands were higher priced for the same feature set. Toshiba, Sony, RCA.

Strength:

Lots of features -- smart sound & picture, S-video inputs, temperature control, etc. Excellent picture on broadcast programs

Weakness:

Those darn dark bars! See the reviews for Philips-Magnavox model TP3284C

This product was purchased from Sears for $440 as an out-of-the-box demo and was approximately 1 year old at the time of purchase. Judging from the four previous reviews, the poorly shielded power supply that creates alternating black-and-gray bars during DVD playback has been resolved on newer models. Unfortunately, however, mine had this problem and could not be fixed by the Sears service technician, so it's going back. (See reviews of model #TP3284C to learn more about this problem.) So if this TV is a 2000 or later model, you can probably buy with confidence; if it's a floor special or used from 1999 or before, AVOID!!!

Awesome picture. Easy to navigate.

First of all as you can see i've made a vast improvement from a 19 inch and it is well worth it. The picture quality is the main reason why I bought this tv. I did some research and found that for the money this is hands down the best value out there. I paid 514.00 for it from best buy about a week ago. I would recommend this tv to anyone who wants to get out of the 19 inch rut.
