Strength:

Picture, size

Weakness:

no selectable video input. Either RCA or S-video

I have had this TV for Several years now and have not seen any problems with it. I run my audio thru a Sony 945 receiver, so I can't comment on the sound from the TV. The on screen display is fine when I need it. No PIP, but I don't think I would use it anyway. Crisp picture with no waviness or distortion.

After my cheap no name 20" died, I looked long and hard at new 27" TV's. On a straight comparison with other leading brands, the JVC offered the best features for the best price. The average user doesn't need more resolution or PIP so why pay more? I also went this way because it matches my JVC Hi-Fi Stereo VCR! For an entry level product with decent features I recommend this TV.

Strength:

cheaper than a sony, great picture!

Weakness:

hmm, can't really see any...

Picture rivals any Trinitron, it's got S-video & component video, & it's cheaper than a Sony! Excellent on-screen menus, easy to use. Not sure about the sound quality since I always use my 5.1 amp. I'm very happy with this unit! Oh yeah, & it's got a 2-year warranty. Beat that, Sony!

Strength:

Good picture, good audio, very good value for the money.

Weakness:

Crappy remote. No PIP.

This TV replaced a 19" "Solid State" (I think Eaton's). A very good deal, much cheaper than any other good brand. Crappy remote, the buttons are too small, but the seperate VCR controls are nice... Why can't they make one with a VCR TV/VCR mode button??? I always have to fish out the VCR remote or turn it off...

Good Value for 27"

Weakness:

Distorted Picture

Nice site. I'm looking to replace this TV with something better. Bonuses: excellent value, it was the cheapest 27" at Sears and looked no worse than others $100 more. If PIP, guide + and component video are not your concerns, this is a good value TV. If you are new to this size range you will be impressed at how easy it is to view, it seems almost too big at first. It is a worthwhile investment if you have a movie channel or use a TV alot.
Minuses: I tried this with my computer in S-Video connection. The test pattern grid of my video out control panel revealed a startling weakness of the TV; the picture was quite distorted. Nowhere could I find a straight line all the way across the tube. As compared to standard video levels of greyscale, the TV was well calibrated in "Standard Mode". White colors get very blurred when brightness is turned up. I found dark areas too hard to see in movies thus it was a balance between too bright and too dark. The space between video lines is a little noticeable. Comb filter is not perfect, crawling dots could be seen inside patches of color.
The most disapointing thing to me was how distorted it really was on a grid pattern or computer desktop. You don't normally notice this in a natural image. Also I am hoping that for just $100-$150 more I can get component video which I hope will make DVD look better. Overall I am spoiled by watching DVD on a computer monitor where it is absolutely photographic, and no flickering lines and edges; perfectly sharp lines and no distortion. I want to mention that a hollywood plus computer card can be tricked into outputting component video with the software for their higher end card; but you need to make an adapter cable.
Also I found the resolution a little poor.
As for the remote, the buttons were a little tiny, but a good thing is it changes channels very quickly. Also the menus are easy to use but very slow to go through. I found that setting the time was not intuitive. Also the auto clock set never worked for me; I had a PBS station from Maine but after 10 minutes it never set. Setting favorite channels was also an awkward process.
Summary: I recommend this as great value for the average person. I do not recommend this to someone who is picky about quality and connects computers and high quality signals. Also widescreen movies take away so much of the screen that the TV seems small again; I found it hard to see some details at a normal distance on a widescreen movie. Get a bigger screen for this purpose; or perhaps a sharper resolution TV of this size.

Strength:

-Wonderful Picture (once you back off on the factory "Sharpness" settings).
- GREAT Value
- Variable Audio Output (Volume buttons on vary the audio line out signal)

Weakness:

Remote has too many tiny buttons (or I'm just ham fisted)
Hyper Surround is underwhelming
Hyper Tuning goes too fast.

After 15 years and uncounted hours, it was time for our family to replace the Sony Trinitron we had used since 1985.

After many hours of research (Including the reviews on this site) I settled on this model as the most bang for the buck available currently. I purchased the AV-27121 (which I guess is a minor change from the 27120 as I can't find a difference in the descriptions and features fromt he JVC web site)from our favourite retailer in my small town (the Sears catalogue store).

Basically I settled on this set in terms price, picture and features. I liked the picture better than the Toshibas or Panasonics, saw no need for the embedded program guide (RCA's).

Also, I ended up deciding to save a few hundred bucks and go for the 27" over the 32" and S-video over Component input. (Can you truly see a difference in the signals from component vs S-video on a 27" TV?)

This ends up being a compromise set that will end up being in upstairs wall unit after I get the basement home theatre finished (yeah right).

After you detune the picture settings from the boosted showroom defaults, picture sharpness is impeccable, and colour saturation looks good to me. A nice feature is the ability to save your personal settings as "Choice" and toggle to them with a single button on the remote.

The remote design is well thought out but the buttons are too small.

The hypersurround is barely noticeable and the hypersurf channel changing is more annoying than useful.

I'm feeding the stereo out to a two channel Yamaha receiver and Yamaha speakers and the sound improvement over a mono Sony is good enough to blow me away (Yeah, Yeah, Laugh away at the yokel who thinks stereo TV is cool.)

The way I figure it, with the money I saved on this set over another Sony I'll be able to buy a DVD player or S-VHS deck.

In the meantime it tides me over as I convince the family that what we really need is 5.1 dolby digital with a 60" display device.

Oh yeah, one final comment, sort of like the old Timex commercials. The first set we received came out of an obviously dropped box (the plastic housing and case were cracked in three or four places). Somewhat nervously, we plugged it in and fired it up. It worked flawlessly and continued to do so for the five days it took Sears to ship a replacement (as an aside, done so without hassle, argument or question). The replacement was made and works like a charm.

If that doesn't say something about build quality I don't know what does. No matter what people say about JVC VCR's and DVD players, their TV's seem to be built like rocks.

This is a replacment set for a SONY KV-1971 (mono, RF in only)(bought in 1985) so I don't have a lot to compare to.

Strength:

great picture for the money compared to a more expensive trinitron, sound is excellent, good design, an s-video input

Weakness:

could have at leat one more a/v input, it dont maatter because i use a 5.1 reciever

this tv has an amazing picture for a regular analog tv. i bought it because my crapy magnavox only had one single r/f input, thats all. i had too many components to hook up so i bought this JVC. i have also had an older 13 in. JVC which is now in the kitchen, my folks also have an older 32 incher and they all still work great! so Jvc carries a good reputation for thier tvs. highly recomend it for the average spending consumer who is the market fo a 27 in tv,.
