Strength:

Excellent Picture, especially with DVD.

Weakness:

Can't use 16 X 9 mode with DVD unless you have a newer DVD with component video inputs.

I have had this set for only a week, but so far it has worked great. The picture on this set is as good if not better than some of the much more expensive widescreen TV's I looked at.

The center channel in feature is really cool, it enables you to use the TV's speakers as a center channel speaker for your surround sound.

The PIP feature is nice too. It allows you to view 2 27" size screens side by side. There is also a multiple channel preview feature.

Could you please help. I have been trying to contact Mr. Ed Stantitz who previously wrote a review saying he was able to obtain a DRC capable television directly from SONY for a little over $2K. Request you please send me his email address or contact him for me to obtain the telephone number at SONY direct he used, and name of the sales person he worked with as I am on a tight budget and would like to try to obtain one with the same terms that Edward purchased his.

Thanks,

Rick Errhalt

Strength:

Fab picture, excellent built-in line doubler

Weakness:

4:3 format leaves large empty horizontal blank spce on widescreen DVDs (this weakness not specific to this TV)

I shopped extensively for a TV and found this to be the best large screen 4:3 set for a bit over 3K. (Dont know where the others got theirs for 2.2k and 2.7K, I bought mine at circuit city and bought peace of mind with a 4 year performance warranty)

This has fabulous picture with regular TV. the Picture with DVDs is good too, but i can't tell a huge difference. It is annoying that we dont have a choice between pan/scan and widescreen on most dvds any more, because although the picture is quite big, it still does not have the same impact as using the full screen. The PPV pictures are all pan/scan on Dirctv, and we actually prefer those to the DVD on this large TV. Can't usually tell the difference in quality. Perhaps this is because I have used only the S-Video feed and not the component video inputs. but the shorter picture alsomakes quality comparison between a 2.35:1 widescreen mode and 4:3 full 61 inch mode difficult.

I found the picture significantly better than that of Panasonic and Mitsubishi TVs which were within $500 of the price. Did not really look at 16:9 sets, which are in a different price range altogether.

Do not use the sound system much, as I have separate dedicated 5.1 setup. (see my reviews of paradigm spkrs). But sound on regular tv programming is more than adequate.

Strength:

Beautiful display with anamorphic DVD's, upconversion is pretty good, looks great, easy to roll even on plush carpet

Weakness:

poor cable reception is amplified, only one 16:9 verticle squeeze component input, SVM

Well this is my first RPTV and it, so far, is great. The verticle sqeeze mode to emulate 16:9 is excellent. Anamorphic DVD's look better than they did on my old 32" Toshiba. As most remote go, it isn't the best, but it is good enough that I wouldn't list it as a weakness as one reviewer below did.

I have digital cable and the standard broadcast channels look kind of grainy... the "digital" channels look really nice. This TV could really benefit from directTV/Dish Network. I am currently looking into it.

Physical appearence is sleek and stylish. Auto convergence button on the front doesn't do anything for the picture, in my opinion. You will definatly need to calibrate this properly with a Video Essentials or AVIA disc.

One nice thing I liked was the very little "red push" you tend to get with a lot of RPTV's. The calibration came out really nice. The HS10's offer 5 viewing modes, Vivid, Standard, Movie, Game, and Pro. Sony implement SVM (scan velocity mode) on all these viewing modes. Movie and Pro are the two that has the least amount of SVM. They use this to enhance the picture, but I think is sucks as it "ghosts" the images. You can go into the service mode and defeat these alltogether, but I haven't yet and Movie/Pro look good (svm=1 on these.. the other vary from svm=2 to svm=3). I was able to get mine for $2700 so the price was a real attraction. The Toshiba was a little better on regular cable input, but not as good with anamorphics (my opinion). However the Toshiba has two sets of HD component inputs, but is more $$$$.

Strength:

Picture on any input looks awesume! Dvd is awesume, DV input, Fixed audio out is nice, front av input,

Weakness:

One HD input, some glare off screen protector

THe best picture of any digital 4:3 tv I have ever seen is from a 36" picture tube. Outside of that the true hdtv 16x9 tv's due have a slightly better picture than the 4:3 hdtv's, unfortunately not everyone can afford 7,000.00 for a tv. and I am one of those !

My system is as follows (Unlike some reviewers, I don't write my dream system!) I have a Denon AVR 3600 w/ dts upgrade, two Infinty RS5, two Infinty RS4, One Infinty CC3, ONe yamaha ystw300, sony kp61hs10, mits u549 s-vhs vcr, Pioneer dvd 334,Toshiba SD3109u, monster cabling, Pioneer LD md434, sony psx...

One issue with the TV that I had was size, fortunately after removing aprox 24 screws the tv comes apart into 3 pieces, back mirror, screen, base. I was able to get the tv parts around a flight of stairs and two doorways.

when playing dvd's (toshiba or pioneer) in the y,cb,br input at 480i, I can kiss the TV and hardly see any distortion, or scan lines, this TV is the best 4:3 tv/hdtv out there compared to the 16x9 hdtv's. Outside of the 36" 4:3 tube this tv had the best picture in its class, and is the only 4:3 tv with a megapixel config , that I am aware of!

The one thing I couldn't get over was the color and brightness of the TV, this TV gave off the same Brightness as a tube !!!, I had to tone down the brightness to prevent my friends from going blind,

I also recently rented a psx2 and used the hdtv hook up and set the psx2 to the hdtv setting, and it rocks!!
Overall this TV provides Size, quality, almost affordable price, and lets not forget HDTV.

PS> The price i paid was discounted for benefit reasons, and includes tax and 4yr in home plan, at retail you are looking at spending aprox 4000.00

Strength:

Picture is truly amazing.

Weakness:

Protective shield. The glare is annoying.

Picture is truly amazing. I put standard setting to NTSC and prefer the picture. Using component hookup to Sony DVD, and Matrix looks "awesome". My 5.1 input helps too.

I was going to get tv calibrated, but decided to wait for a few months - letting the set break-in.

Purchased RCA entry level satellite with dual LNB and 2 receivers. Using s-video input, and the picture is unbeatable.

Strength:

Same as before

Weakness:

There is a product up-date issued by Soy on HS10 series

I think Sony ha goofed. Well sort of.

My set's diagnostic system started giving 5 flashes at cold start up time and no picture. Turn the unit off & on-- bingo. Later, I realized it is a known and wide spread problem with sets that are manufactured prior to mid July-early August. Sony took care of my problem with speed and they even called my local service center and sent them over. They replaced two resistors with one new resistor and that took care of problem. Aside from that, the set has been working beautifully.

From what I have learned, some sets exhibit different symptoms. If you have any problems with the set, have it updated. Most likely that will take care of the problem.

Strength:

Great picture quality, very good depth of field.

Weakness:

Remote is cheesy, glare glare and more glare from screen saver.

If you have the space in your room this seems to be a great TV, be warned that you need at least 10 feet between the viewer and the set. My TV is hooked up to a Onkyo 777 THX reciever that is powering two Polk RT800i front speakers a polk CS400 center speaker and Two polk 500 surround speakers, thus I have never even turned on the speakers on the Sony and I really appreciate the speaker off swith in the audio meny of this set. Sources for the pictue are a DSS and a Sony DVD player with component out. The picture quality with the component out through Video 4 is exceptional, but I am slightly dissapointed with the picture quality from the DSS. The picture from DSS is wonderfull on the close up shots but the depth of field is lacking, I feel that this is due to a poor incoming signal from my DSS that I will need to correct, This set is not very forgiving to poor signal quality. My last big screen did not have a screen saver and it got trashed by my 11 years of use, this time I insisted on getting the screen saver but it creates a lot of reflection and glare, you will need to have all shades drawn to view this set in daylight hours. All in all I love the picture but I have to give the TV an overall rating of 4 due to the remote and the glare. Sony really needs to supply a beteer remote with this set. The little flip up door on the remote will probably not last one year in a household with young children.

Strength:

Picture Quality

Weakness:

Only 1 HDTV Input

This set is one of the best values in an HDTV ready set. The picture quality on all sources is very good. An HDTV picture is beautiful. Since most of our viewing is still standard cable programs we opted to go with a 4:3 set. When there is a lot more HDTV programming it wll be time to go to a 16:9 set. I have used this set for 4 months and have not had any problems.
