Strength:

Picture Quality. The best RPTV on the market today. The all over styling is outstanding.

Weakness:

None

This rptv has the best picture I have seen on the market today. Very clear, and gorgeous color. There are lots of picture modes to choose from. You can also change every picture type to your own preferences, and very easily.
The sound is awesome and even tho I have it hooked up to a Bose system, it is still outstanding when I choose just the tv speakers. The styling of the set is really cool too.
We are very very happy with this purchase. Sony has come thru once again in a big way!!

Strength:

Hi-Definition picture, multiple picture formats. PIP features, build quality.

Weakness:

Only 1 HD input?? Cable or terrestrial source picture quality is poor, all source formats can appear "fuzzy" or out of focus at times.

First of all, I'd like to ask Brian from Oakland a few questions about the component video switcher he purchased. I could not find a 2-port model on Extron's web site. What is the model # you own and where can you purchase their products? This appears to be a good solution to the single HD input oversight.

I've owned the set for about 6 months and overall I'm quite pleased. With DVD and satellite sources the picture is great with the exception of a "fuzzy" appearance at times. I would definitely prefer a sharper focus. Cable and terrestrial sources display very poorly although my viewing time is minimal with these sources so this isn't huge drawback for me. One small nuisance is the fact that the time and source displays for a minute or so upon initial power-up? Certainly NOT necessary!!! Multiple picture and format modes (including MOVIE which disables Hi-Velocity Scan) are very useful and the PIP features are awesome.

In summary, this is a great set that I would recommend as long as your video sources are HDTV, SAT, or DVD. One thing I forgot to mention is build quality - this thing is a tank. Bravo to Sony for considering this as a $4500 price tag deserves a solid cabinet as well.

Strength:

I was exicited when I received the set and thought it was the end all

Weakness:

After owning it for 14 mo, problems start to occur

I simply think it is time to sum up the reviews on this set as it will be discontinued shortly. No doubt the newbees think it is the latest and greatest since sliced pie when they first receive it... and so did I. A part from a few Sony haters, and few lemons out of the box, which happens from time to time, valid assessments really take awhile.

I am not going to say I am unhappy at this product... but I think it is clear, from my experience, and others that love Sony products as I do, that this set has not met up to Sony standards in the long haul. This set according to Sony, "being an Audiophile grade product, does need to be tuned from time to time".

Unfortuntatly the reality of the situation is that maintainance after 9 mo of ownership of this set exceeds most pocket books, and that irriates many. For those who have kept their cool on this complaint. Thank You. It does suffer from a need for tuning every 9 mo, but again looks superb for another 9.

So lets understand the nature of rear screen in general. Most sets need to be tuned annualy to perform optimally. Though this set needs to be tuned every 9+ mo, the electronic reliability has been superb, with the exceptional failure of the auto focus system, which occurs every 14+ mo's for persons that watch TV an avg of 8 hours a day, and usually every two years for the average tv watcher, 4 hours a day. That is on par for most rear screens on the market in this generation.

Bang for the buck and reliability, there are better sets on the market these days, including the Mits and Pioneer, and thus why Sony will be replacing this set shortly with a much improved model to address these issues. For this reason I cannot give this set the platinum award for excellence, but it does met silver status.
