Strength:

When it's not flickering it's great TV.

Weakness:

Green Flicker

TV worked great for the first 8 months. I was really impressed with the quality of the picture. However, after 8 months the TV began exhibiting the "green flicker". If I were able to get my money back, I'd buy a Mitsubishi wide screen projection.

Strength:

It was a great picture when it was working.

Weakness:

Flickering, Hue contol

I have the 51WS500 and have the flickering problem too. However, the picture presents a reddish color more than green. Told HH Gregg about it and their supposed to replace it with the extended warranty I purchased. We'll see. I just think that Sony should stop producing these sets when they know they're serious problems with it. Either that, or the retail outlets stop selling them. The only people that are getting jerked around are the consumers.

good picture when it worked.

Weakness:

If you like throwing money down the drain buy this TV.

OOPS....bought the wrong tv. Got the green flicker. Sony came out 3 times before they decided to replace the tubes. They replaced the tubes and botched that. Now they are going to replace the tube for the second time. Do not buy this TV.....Save your money. By the way....Soundtrack screwed me. email me for info.

Strength:

Beautiful with component video DVD. Easy to set up. Good manual. Flexible connections. Rollers for easy moving. Scratch and dent resistent screen cover.

Weakness:

Green flicker problem. That's really it. If they can fix it, I'm happy as a clam.

I also have the "green flicker" problem. Bought in August. Color saturation and brightness changes like when reading by firelight. Service called. Does anyone know if there is a fix to this? I notice that it's more noticeable when the color saturation is high. Really bad on the DirecTV menus or other solid color screens. Otherwise, no complaints. I love this set. It's so good, you'll notice compression in the source material.

Strength:

When working properly it delivers a great picture with the HDTV. Too bad there is only one truly high def channel being filmed and broadcasted in HD...

I bought this TV in May and after 3 months experienced the same flickering problem that many people have had. A service tech has come out and Sony is well aware of this problem. In my case there are two resistors that went bad and this caused the 3 picture tubes (guns) to fail. I am waiting for them to come back to finish the repair.

Poor customer service RANDOM FLICKERING High Price

I have the Sony 51HW40 with the exact same "Flicker" problem as the previous review. I WILL MEVER BUY SONY AGAIN. These TV's are supposed to be the best but they are junk. Circuit City will not take it back, they are losers also. I will only buy from Best Buy.

GREEN FLICKER

I bought the Sony 51" and it worked fine for 4 months. Now I have the "Green Flicking" problem. It comes and goes. Tech support is CRAP and no one knows how to fix it. I may just throw it away and buy another TV (NOT SONY) Sony service is TERRIBLE!!!!

Strength:

Beautiful picture and sound, easy to move, attractive presentation, useful features.

Weakness:

Aside from the problem listed above, the screen scratches VERY easily, watch your little ones around it!! Sony customer service leaves something to be desired.

(I REPOSTED THIS REVIEW BECAUSE THE EMAIL ADDRESS ON MY PREVIOUS REVIEW WAS INCORRECT) We bought our TV in January of 2002, with a manufacture date of December 2001. Brought it home plugged it in to our DVD, Satellite, VHS, stereo system, and gaming system. Love the TV. The picture is great, sound is great, easy to use. (We do not yet have the HDTV receiver but hope to get one soon.) Have not had the "green flicker" problem, and do not see much of a problem with the angle of viewing as stated in a previous review. We had no problems what-so-ever...until two weeks ago. (TV 11-months old, one month left on mfg warranty.) Our TV just started shutting off on its own very sporadically, sometimes staying on after a few shut offs and sometimes not wanting to stay on at all. Red light on the front ("diagnostic" light) blinks 8 times, pause, blinks 8 times, pause, etc. Sony's customer service has heart, but no real substance, took their time in getting back to us after a week's worth of calls. Could not give us a diagnosis for the 8 blinks from the "diagnostic" light. We've had more problems with the actual servicing stores than Sony itself. Anyway, the picture seems to go out first then, within a couple of seconds, the unit shuts itself off. Have had it happen 3 times in less than a minute to 1 time in several hours. We have tried several things, from taking batteries out of remotes in case of stray signals, unplugging the TV for up to 24 hours, plugging in to different outlets, etc. We're aggrivated that our $2300 TV has only worked perfectly for 11 months..and our two small TVs (around $400 ea) have never had problem and they're both over a decade old. They're coming to pick up the TV next week, said would be 2 weeks or so for repairs. When we get it back I'll repost with additional info.....if you have comments or questions about this problem, feel free to e-mail me.

Strength:

Great picture, best with progressive scan DVD player. I want to see high def. in my home! Sound is great, but I use my home theater system.

Weakness:

Need to be sitting eye level to see a great picture, but not a real issue. These television's aren't cheap!

I have been a bit leary to write anything because I don't want to jinx myself. I like to read reviews and decided to post one myself. I have owned this T.V. since June and it is now Dec. I love it. Knock on wood no green flicker that two other people have mentioned. The picture is great. I was worried about how the picture would look with satellite, but I am pleased. Even my over the air channels (antenna) look good. Now, DVD is another story. I decided to get a JVC progressive scan player because of all the hype. Well, they weren't kidding. It makes all the difference in the world. I am hoping to get a high definition receiver for my satellite so I can take full advantage of this product. I don't think the buttons are confusing and it is very user friendly. I love how light it is and the ease of use that comes with moving the T.V. to hook-up additional components. In my weakness box I am simply saying that in order to view a T.V. like this you must be seated. In the stores they are raised up in the air on risers. Sure you can get one that looks great from any angle (plasma), but if you don't have 15 grand to spend on a T.V. this size, this may be a better choice. When I watch this T.V. I am sitting down either in a recliner or my couch, so my view is great! Hopefully this will last me for years. I have been shopping for years and really wanted a big screen. As soon as the wide screen came out I made my decision to get one of those. My only choice was when and what brand. This T.V. fits perfect in my living room. I am about 16 feet away and I am not totally blown away. I don't want one any larger. They look cool in the store, but to be honest, I don't think most people will want one that large in their home. Too much! I had a little 25" Sanyo. You know the Walmart el-cheapo. Big switch. What a father's day gift! Take your time and look at all these high def. T.V.'s before you buy. Money doesn't grow on trees so spend wisely. I feel that I did! By the way, my neighbor bought the exact same thing. He is very happy too!

My first large screen. Get the Progressive Scan DVD player. Usually around $159 for the cheapest JVC at Circuit City. It works perfectly!!

I have to say that I am amazed at everyone's complaint regarding this TV. I bought this last year at Thanksgiving and I have yet to see the green flicker that everyone is talking about. Maybe I got lucky or I have yet to expereince this problem. Hopefully not!!! Can someone tell me exactly how and when would I see the green flicker ? THanks
