Don't buy one. They don't have the parts to fix them. I just got off the phone with Sony service and they told me there was nothing they could do. I now have a big pile of junk in my livingroom.
Stay away from this product. After the service call i just had with Sony - I would stay away from all there products. I thought a Sony product would be a good purchase - well i was wrong - Buyer beware

Good TV never had any problems. It has set in the same spot since I bought it in December 2001. Sony makes a good product. Will buy Sony again.

Had this set for well over 5 years, no problems whatsoever. No repairs no lines, was shocked to see other have problems, I guess people with a bad experience are more prone to post. It has been great set with not one repair!

Strength:

Good picture for a projection TV.

Weakness:

Must be serviced after 3 years. Very expensive to repair. Does not pay to repair.

Well its three years now since I got my first Sony HDTV model KP-51HW40. Now I find out I must replace all three picture tube at a cost of 1000 dollars. Last Sony I buy!

Strength:

First projection set, pic looked great until the red lines!

Weakness:

Poor Picture with red lines.

Had the set for 3 years. First 18 month great then came the horizontal red lines! Spaced about 2 inches apart and arching upwards. I eliminated any magnetic issues and they seem to be getting worse! Looks worse on a darker picture or at certain angles. I expected with the Sony name this would be a quality product and with all the customer service issues I will just deal with it until my next set. Chalk this up to an expensive lesson and will never buy another Sony TV. Guess they need to stick to the music business!

Strength:

Pretty good piture when it worked.

Weakness:

Just read the review above.

I experienced the famed flicker isuue that most everyone else has had. The set was repaired under warranty and worked great for about one month. On Christmas Day, walla the screen turns red , a pop is heard and the kp51ws500 has died. Two more trips by the repair company and we have pronounced the set ready for burial. Sony is shipping me a replacement. I have tried to find out if it the same set, a rebuilt set or an upgraded version of the Titanic. The regional rep does not know, the customer service reps at Sony can not anwser my question and it is a mystery to my dealer. When will this electronic wonder reach me? Today, 12 days after Sony said they will ship my replacement they were able to give me an 800# to track the progress of my shipment. Apparently to have my selling dealer pull one out of inventory and be reimbursed by Sony is just not how thing are done. This has been a valuable lesson in customer service. Please keep this in mind when considering Sony. I am greatful for the replacement, but hey for 2 grand on a tv,I think they should last a little longer than a year. A big thanks to my selling dealer who when asked about an extended warranty said when the last time you had a problem with a tv? My anwser is when I purchased a Sony. It has been three weeks without my big screen. Oh well, I am just a number at Sony.

Strength:

The set had a nice picture and easy to use features when it worked. The sound in the set was good also.

Weakness:

There had been small glitches periodically with the television. The lack of a diagnostic screen and detailed troubleshooting make this television unfriendly for the user to try to diagnose their own fix. Take the back off, there is not much in there to fix.

I originally purchased the Sony kp51hw40 because it was feature rich and had a split screen mode I was looking for. The SONY name has always been associated with quality so I thought it was a safe bet. I have never owned a projection tv before and with the intermittent little problems inherent in the sets I don't think I will own another. Especially not another SONY big screen. SONY has really let quality slip in their products to make price points more reasonable. No longer are they driven to be an industry leader for quality and service. Profit is the bottom line and inferior products are getting shipped to unsuspecting customers who have always trusted SONY. I got the kp51hw40 in February 2002 and it is now, in December 2003 no longer focusing. The flash focus botton on the front of the set is a joke. I did not purchase the overpriced extended service policy as I have never bought one before on any other television I have owned and never needed one. Now to get this thing worked on takes the patience of a saint because everywhere you call wants to come pick up the set and take to their hidden repair facility somewhere on the outskirts of town. Where has the in-home service gone? This television is huge! and heavy! You don't see a refrigerator repair guy coming to take your fridge when it needs a service. Why then is it necessary to take the television away? Long story a little longer, buy a picture tube television and be happy. They seem to still be the only reliable products for television watching.

I had the same problems with my set when I first purchased it. They fixed the problem (guns were defective from the factory, I was told). Now it works fine. IMO, if you pay this much, spend alittle more and get the extra warrenty, for peace of mind. At Futureshop, I got the three times a lemon garentee. I'm on two right now.

Strength:

almost perfect picture in both HDTV as well as in the digital mode

Weakness:

none that I have found yet

Bought the Sony KP51WS500 last Dec 9. Liked it from the start. I work in Tech Support for Directv so I wanted the best I could afford. About a month into use I did have a green problem but fortunately my tv tech is a Sony authorized repair shop and he came out and made a small adjustment which seems to have fixed it as it has not reoccurred. This spring I added the Sony HD200 HDTV satellite receiver and am now wowed by the fantastic HD picture and sound (Home theatre system connected). In HD the picture on this set is almost 3D. You can tell when a program has been filmed in HD as opposed to one that has been reformatted to HD, sporting events are so clear that when looking at the audience in many cases one can see individual features on the faces. I keep the setting at the wide zoom 1 which is possible through the remote for the HD satellite receiver. All in all, I am happy with my first projection type tv, but after reading some of these reviews I think that I will purchase the extended Warranty ....just in case.
