Strength:

Sleep timer, on/off timer, DVI, HDMI, Component Video, S-Video & PC inputs. Good overall picture and nice blacks. Not deep blacks, but solid. No convergence issues.

Weakness:

This set needs about 1 minute to reach an acceptable level of brightness, however give it 5 minutes to be safe. Let it warm up for at least 30 minutes before conducting calibration. Not all DVI sources work. I'm not sure if it was from my Comcast Cable & DirecTv Samsung box, but neither of them worked. I suspect that the set is DVI-D while the other components aren't. Shouldn't be a problem if you use HDMI or component video. DVI is on its way out. Cannot use split screen when using two high definition sources.

This review is for the Samsung HLP-6163W. This set as with all DLP & flat panel sets must be properly calibrated. I used the Digital Video Essentials DVD. High Definition sources look incredible. Because this set is 720p native, I suggest that your output source is switched to 720p. After calibrating the set, I found that the set looks best using warm 1 or 2 picture modes with contrast, sharpness & brightness, & color set to 50, the midway point. If you get your set professionally calibrated, those settings will slightly change. As of now, my high definition source & DVD player are component connections, however I plan to used the HDMI connection after upgrading to the denon 3910S. I believe the picture quality will significantly improve. Please note, standard definition sources look tolerable at best. If you don't plan to watch High Definition content anytime soon, I'm not sure if this set is for you. DVD looks great, but its only 480p, even if it’s upscaled to 720p or 1080i, its still not true high definition.

Strength:

Picture quality, DVI input, good looks, light weight, and no worrying about convergence issues.

Weakness:

Samsung customer service is TERRIBLE. Less than a week after receiving the set, it failed to turn on. Could NEVER get through to Samsung, but OneCall assisted providing a local service technician. They had to make 2 service calls to get it right, and replaced a board, but it's worked fine ever since (3+ weeks of distress later).

I purchased the Samsung HLP5663 after doing a LOT of research on projection televisions. After careful consideration, and seeing the picture quality of the previous generation set, I was convinced that DLP was the way to go (particularly since I have to carry the set up a flight of stairs!). This was the first set available with the latest generation DLP chip from Texas Instruments, with a claimed contrast ratio of 1500:1. The picture quality is OUTSTANDING with high quality sources after adjusting the color balance, contrast, etc. I used the THX set-up screen (included with the Toy Story 2 DVD, among others). You will also need a stand, though Samsung takes a little too much pride in pricing theirs. I purchased another unit from Circuit City that blends well (slightly wider than the set), has a good glass audio shelf, and was less than half the price. The set upconverts all video sources to 720p. This works well with high quality sources, but you don't "gain" information that isn't there...bad source quality yields a blocky, grainy picture. Switch to a progressive DVD source or (better yet) a HDTV source and be prepared to be floored! I am using a Samsung DirecTV HD receiver with the DVI output to eliminate the need to go through a D/A (and A/D) conversion. I have noticed a SLIGHT green tint in some shadow details, but overall, shadow detail is excellent...MUCH better than by 10 year old JVC 32" CRT set. I have not noted ANY "rainbow" effect except when using test signals (like the difficult "white circle" test on the aforementioned THX disc, particularly when you glance away). No optical distortion noted at all when using the same (can't say the same for my CRT set).
