Strength:

Killer picture...!!!

Weakness:

Heavy...this persisting problem with all sets is ridiculous.

Bought the first set...had it 2 weeks...it died. No power. Numerous calls to Support were always responded with "gusto". Just couldn't get anywhere to get someone out to check it out. Called Good Guys, they took it back and gave me a new set after 'splaining what was happening. No probs with the new set until 1 year later. No power again, hi pitched squealing coming from back. Called Support again, they assigned a repair shop, next day, he was here. Took a gander at it, and said he needed to call RCA for recommendations on parts to replace. Man, this really blows. After all was said and done with you folks out there with similar problems, was it fixed? Did it function normally after??? We should all hire "somebody" to check into this and maybe get our money back. This is bordering on "lemon batch" big time! Oh well...I'll "wait and see".

Strength:

Great HDTV picture... ( in the dark house )

Weakness:

Picture rolls on the sides while playing a dvd. The glass on the tube is too reflective. Bad for daytime viewing.

What the heck? is that noise. Oh its the fan that runs all day and night. I could live with that except that I also noticed that when I play a dvd the picture bends at the sides of the tube.Im not sure if I have a defective tube or not.Dont plan on watching TV in the day time. The glare in the telivision is pretty bad.

Strength:

Great picture and feature-set.

Weakness:

The inability to turn off a box fan in a piece of electronics with either a thermostat and/or software is inexcuseable.

The first one I had kept flickering and shutting itself off. The second one made high-pitched squealing noises out of the back, (Daddy, the TV is giving me a headache). It is going back. And yes,the fan is very annoying. If it bothers you now, it will make you crazy in a few years.

Strength:

Great picture. HDTV DirecTV receiver built in. (Goodbye crummy cable) Nice set for a not so large living room.

Weakness:

24/7 cooling fan. (Not a good set for the bedroom.) No timers. Poor manual. (Poor RCA website also.) Optional stand not as large as it looks, tapers with tv.

Got this TV for our 15 year anniversary. It is heavy to move but once in place, who cares? Great picture receiving hd from antenna, it smokes the crummy Comcast Cable picture I get. I'm signing up with DirecTV shortly to take advantage of the HD Directv receiver. The TV is shy of some nice features, timers, good menus, poor manual, but over all its the picture that counts. Have read complaints about pip not working in DTV mode, but you can't mix analog with digital signals on the same screen. Also the reason there's no video out for the VCR if for the same reason, VCR's are analog, they can't tape a digital signals. And if you're using regular cable, you can split it before it comes in. Welcome to the digital TV world! Over all, for the price I payed, its a good tv.

Strength:

Stong, clear HDTV picture.

Weakness:

Customer Service bordering on Criminal. Lousy standard picture, few features. Fan that runs constantly.

The "Authorized Thompson's Repair Center" and RCA (Thompson's Multimedia) have had my TV for 2 months after it's power supply went bad. There are parts that are back-ordered with no foreseeable time for being recieved. After 2 months RCA refuses to refund my money or replace the set even though its under warranty. They keep saying my case is being reviewed by their "Research" department, but they haven't contacted me. They were supposed to call me within a week and that was 5 weeks ago. Several phone calls later they suggest whoever was researching my case must no longer work for them. They refuse to let me speak to anyone above customer service, and tell me that I cant call the research department (The people who decide about replacements and refunds I gather) because they have no phone. I am meeting with an attorney today and hope I dont have to waste too much of my life trying to get my TV back. Avoid RCA like the plague. No matter what product you want they all have the same Customer Service department.

Strength:

Great picture

Weakness:

Pathetic Customer Service/warranty support

I bought this TV 3 months ago (it has been at the service center for 2 months and counting) and it seems to be the worst consumer electonics decision I've ever made. Initially it worked fine (over the air). When I had a Direct TV dish installed,it became apparent that the inbuilt direct tv tuner didn't work. The RCA recommendend repairer came and collected it and determined there was also a problem with the picture tube - on contacting RCA, they were told that a replacement tube would be available in SEPTEMBER!! RCA customer service said they could do nothing and had no other suggestions. I'm now waiting for Thompson consumer relations to "research" the problem, but not holding my breath! My advice - choose a TV with better warranty support

Strength:

Excellent piture quality. Good Price Point.

Weakness:

Lack of enough inputs (i need 2 comp) No video output 24/7 fan Remote No sleep timer Menus are very poor Has any one tried RCA''s consumer relations? That all together will stop me next time i decide to purchase an HD set.

First of all let me start of with saying. I will NEVER purchase another RCA product again. I bought this TV November of 2001 and have had problems ever since. The biggest problem being with RCA and their consumer relations department. When the set worked it was fantastic. But like everyone else. Where are the video outputs? What do i do with my TIVO? Which moron decided to put a cooling fan on which runs all the time and you would think it could change channels a little faster compared to my Sony Wega. If you ask me would i recommend this set to other people. Sure if you are a risk taker. Because if it breaks you are on your own!!! RCA will not stand behind this product; i have personal experience!

Weakness:

No A/V Out, only one DTV input

This product meets my criteria for best picture... 10x over rear screen models for brightness & picture, this is the end all TV... The previous review is partially incorrect, the predecessor to this model 38300 did not support 1080i via the SYNCROSCAN component input. The current ver reviewed here, does support 480i/p/1080i, though does not support 720p native or upconversion... The picture is totaly spectacular... Don't waste on your $'s on rear screen... This tube is it!!!

Strength:

Picture quality.

Weakness:

One heavy mo fo, hurt my back gettin' it upstairs, laying in bed in pain watching it as I type this on my laptop!

OK, I'm spoiled and have my economic priorities screwed up. My primary set is a one year old 55" Mitsubishi Diamond HDTV projection set supported by a top of the line Mitsubishi progressive scan DVD player and quailty DTS sound system. Bottom line, about the best big screen on the market, so that's my point of reference.

Decided it was time to get a new bedroom tv to take the best advantage of my new XBox with widescreen and HDTV support. Looking for a widescreen HDTV tube set, I went to Good Guys and Best Buy to check them out. Saw only two worth mentioning, this one and a $4,000 Sony (they had comparable pictures coming from a digital HDTV feed in the stores). No way I was going to shell out $4,000 for a bedroom set, heck that's as much as I spent for the big screen. So, focused on the RCA even though it did not have a flat screen, which I would have preferred.

Researched it on the net, discovered about the bad chip/recall problem and that it had been resolved. Then bought a factory refurb on e-bay (never left factory, was refurbed there because of the chip prob) for $1,800 versus the stores' $2,499 price.

Well, the bad first.

WEIGHT: I hurt my back helping the delivery guy get it upstairs, as others have written, this is a HEAVY set. REALLY heavy. Don't lift yourself!

LIMITED FEATURES: After being spoiled by the Mitsubishi, I was bummed there was no snooze/wakeup timer on the set, would be very useful in the bedroom. Also disappointed the color and other settings are not memorized by input. I use different settings for DirectTV, DVD, and XBox/gaming, and this does not record them by input, meaning every time I switch I'm in the menus tweaking. The features on this set are MINIMAL, thus part of the reason it's half the cost. Heck, the remote control even lacks backlit buttons you can see in the dark.

FAN: What genious sets up a tv fan to run 24/7 even when the set is off? Since I have it in the bedroom this is very annoying, moreso than it would otherwise be. Plus I live in utility insane San Diego, so the electric costs will be a pain.

SCREEN: Not flat, curved.

INPUTS: Only one set of component video inputs, no s-video in front.

But then there's the good.

PICTURE: It takes alot of tweaking from the factory presets, but the picture is very good. I'm using the XBox for a DVD player, at least temporarily, and the picture is so good I may not buy a progressive scan DVD player for the set. DirectTV's HDTV channels are excellent and the non-HDTV channels are much better on this set than they are on my 55" Mitsubishi. I can use the fill mode on this set on those channels or with a full screen version DVD and get an acceptable picture quality - whereas the pic on the big screen is unbearable in that mode.

That's the only positive. But then that's the most important issue anyway, isn't it?

Strength:

Great picture from over-the-air HD broadcasts and DVD. Price.

Weakness:

Curved screen. Difficult to exit out of menus.

Just to let you know Best Buy has again dropped the price on this set. For $1800 you get a brand new TV (June 2001), and free shipping--a deal that can not be beat. The only problem is that they are back ordered on the set, but that will be resolved soon. I have an outdoor antenna, so I'm watching HD broadcasts from ABC, CBS, and PBS--and the view is eye popping spectacular--better than my progressive scan DVD. For analog broadcasts, we have the set on "fill" mode which eliminates the annoying grey bars on the sides of the image.
