Strength:

Picture, DVD/Laserdisk playback.

Weakness:

very few and insignificant

I purchased this set two years ago and thought that it looked great. I had an ISF tech calibrate it and WOW. After watching the Fifth element, Bug's life and Starship troopers I have dropped the idea of getting an HDTV for now.
The picture is smooth with no scan lines, the colors are rich and clear. Watching a baseball game off the DSS system is like being there. Many picture size modes available. If your looking for a 16x9 NTSC RPTV for DVD watching this is the one to have if you can find one.

Looked at other RPTV available at the time and the Toshiba looked the best.

Strength:

High resolution (NTSC) monitor, multiple inputs, multiple screen modes

Weakness:

Convergence on edges, 4:3 technology on 16:9 monitor

I bought the Pioneer 2 years ago after much research. This set is the best for NTSC. This comes close to High Def. When I bought it, it was the best 16:9 bang for the buck.

You get 5 different screen modes which I do switch around with all the different aspect ratio's they are broadcasting now. DVD looks incredible on it. I even have my computer hooked up to it via a S-video cable. I use 600x800 resolution and it looks great. I also have a DSS & VCR on it also. The remote is wonderful. It controls all my video components.

My one negetive comment is that the monitor uses 4:3 technology. This makes the side convergence almost impossible to get perfect. I've come close, but after many conversations with a certified Pioneer repair person helped me understand the reasons. Thank God that 16:9 technology is starting to come to America. Too bad it's expensive.

I can't wait to get a High Def. monitor, but I don't regret having what I got at all because I could afford to have almost High Def without the wait. I got the set from Sound City for $3,300.00 which included shipping to Florida. That was a killer price at the time.

Strength:

Very good picture from all angles. When working.

Weakness:

Pioneer service

I was initially impressed with the TVs picture quality, and its ease of use. The picture was as good as non-projection pictures and was the best I could find for the money. Not long after owning the television I began to have problems. When the tv was turned on it would shut itself down and would have to be powered down before it would turn back on. The tv was under warranty and pioneer gave me the local service reps. number. After several weeks of attempts to have the tv repaired and several complaints about the lack of service to pioneer a repair was made on the tv. The tv initially seemed to be better and after all this hassel my warranty had expired. The tv began to get "sick" again and problems began to get worse. Along with shuting itself down the screen modes stopped working and there were also mysterious channel changing episodes performed by the tv. Now after two power supply replacements and several other parts all of which except the first power supply came out of my own pocket the tv is doing better although it has only been a few days since the repairs so who knows. All in all my main problem is not with the tv but with the way Pioneer didn't handle the problems of the tv. To spend that amount of money on a product and recieve almost no service at all is rediculous.
After years of buying pioneer products and spending more than $10,000 on their equipment I have bought my last pioneer product. Hello Sony, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, ect...

Strength:

Clear picture and vibrant colors; very good quality - never had to replace parts or call for repair

Weakness:

Convergence occasionally needs realignment and even with the technician using Pioneer specs. and convergence tools, it can only be tuned O.K. not perfect.

The comparison of the Pioner to the 45" mits. isn't fair - I willl not do it.
I once again will say the clearity on this set (the first of Pioneer's 16 X 9 series) is still impressive enough to prevent me from buying a HDTV. I would like to have a newer set, BUT I cannot justify the amount of gain for the money.
Anyway, one of the best analog sets produced.
