Strength:

Stunning clarity, absolutely precise color/contrast (especially the hard-to-reproduce reds and blacks), gorgeous black lacquer finish, ... ad infinitum ...

Weakness:

Very heavy (don't install it with your beer buddies) and unforgiving for sub-par video signals.

There's not much I can add to the kudos already presented below except to undeniably confirm that they are not overstating the clarity and "reference quality" of this high resolution TV. Blacks are absolutely black. Reds are the best I've seen. Apparent depth-of-field is almost infinite. And this is with only feeding it a 480p signal from a Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD player!

If you can afford it and have the room for it, there is no way in the world you will be disappointed with your purchase. I'd give it six stars if I could!

Strength:

Excellent product so say the least. The quality and picture resolution is beyond belief. I currently have an eight year old Sony DVD player connected, but even with this old equipment the performance is exceptional. The broadcast quality with my cable connection is also exceptional. I was thinking of saving a few buck and buying a lesser brand but I am glad I didn't. This is a fine piece of equipment. I did extensive side-by-side comparisons to all the other HDTVs and this product clearly stood out from all the others.

Weakness:

It is heavy.

This is certainly the best of breed. If you want the best viewing TV with a large screen, then this unit is for you. The 64" screen is awsome and the adjustments are easy to make. I recently used video essentails to "fine tune" the video on my system but only required very minor adjustments. I also use the system without the protective plastic cover screen since my kids are now grown and I don't have to worry about hand prints and other problems with the expensive display screen. Since I have never used it, I don't know what improvements (if any) that screen cover would provide.

Strength:

OUT OF THE BOX UP AND RUNNING.EXCELLENT PICTURE.

Weakness:

NONE

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. We have had prior experience with Pioneer products and never have been dissapointed. The pro 710hd is no exception. Its main use is for home theater.

Can't tell you about the speakers or the remote control. The B&K Ref 30 controls the whole system and external speakers do the rest. Our dream system consist of: Pioneer dvd38a,a pair of B&W 802,a B&W htm1,a B&W asw4000 ,all bi-wire ,B&K 7250 and Krell 250a .And four Rock Solid. The amps are B&K 7250 and Krell 250a.

Strength:

Great picture, nice cabinet
Great picture, nice cabinet, stunning with dvd.

Weakness:

Heavy, not cheap, protective screen dims and yellows the picture a bit.

About the best picture out there that I could find, really good detail, with no artifacts. The Toshiba 65HD looked good on high definiton demo, but just ok with dvd; sales clerk said it was the cables, which if true, makes for a poor sales demo. The sony 57" looked good, but their 65" lost a lot of contrast and detail, unlike the 710.

One thing I noticed immediately with the 710 was a slight yellowing in the whites, and a very general dimming of the picture, especially with cable tv signals. Turned out, the protective screen had been pre-installed for me; I took it off, and voila!!! just the best whites and overall picture out there; anyone who has bought this unit may want to check if that protective screen is on, and try watching without it; in my opinion, a great improvement, to the point of wondering why Pioneer would have the screen in the first place.

If you have the room (I sit 13 feet back),the money, and the desire for the best right now, you will not be disappointed.

I'd give this unit a five and a half star!!!!

Strength:

Beautiful craftmanship, Exquisite picture

Weakness:

I Don't Think So-oooooo!

Let me say that just about every great thing about this set has been covered here in previous postings. I just want to express that it's all true!
I just sat back to enjoy this beauty after spending the afternoon hooking it up to my Home Theater gear.
Right out of the box it displays a gorgeous picture fed by my Echostar 6000 HD satellite receiver. Standard definition shows up sharp & detailed (thank God for great satellite feed!!) I won't go on & on. Simply put THIS IS THE BEST HD RPTV Out There. Do not hesitate.
And you can't get a better deal $ if you shop wisely.

I actually have not purchased this unit yet. However, based on my extensive research, I have found this to be the best rear projection set available.

I mostly wanted to post this review to help compensate for those two previous posts that (very undeservingly) gave this unit a low rating.

Read the other reviews. The longer ones. And you'll see that this unit is AMAZING.

Better yet, go see one in person.

Strength:

The best there is in every department. Where to start....the line doubler, the CRTs, the amazing finish, NTSC signals look great, HD.....well, it is out of this world! If you are considering this unit, you know all about it.

Weakness:

The amazing finish. You cant keep your eyes off of it. It also makes you want to dust every time you walk up to it.

I had been researching the RPTV thing for about a year, I kept coming back to this one. The first hook for me was the lenticular pitch screen, which no other manufacturer could touch. Pioneers'.52mm to Mits'.72mm....The difference is there, I promise. Do not believe the talk about 9" CRTs, either, it is all in the quality. I'd stack up Pioneer's 7" guns to Mits' 9s anytime. This picture is beautiful, the set itself is not overly huge, as one might think. Some other RPTVs in the same screen size look much larger, but it is all frame and pedestal! The 710 gives you this big screen, yet in an understated but tasteful manner. The emphasis here being on the screen and not the whole unit.

The second hook had to be the guts of this thing, that being the line doubler, its ability to perform a true 2:3 pulldown, multiple component hookups (Sony doesnt), In all the perfect piece of video gear. I have Time Warner Cable for my source, and I couldnt be happier with the reception; which looks by the way better than on my 36" Toshiba in the bedroom. Digital cable via Svideo gives me a fabulous picture, the circuitry in this set really delivers. DVDs are beyond words. You will rediscover your collection and shake your head in amazement. I currently dont have my VHS hooked up to it, but I'm sure it is at least tolerable. Why bother?

Thirdly, what are we really talking about here? High Definition. If you have seen it, true 1080i, not some junk or upconverted signal - you know you have seen a perfect picture. Currently our cable company offers seven HD channels on the lineup with a couple more coming. I know it doesnt sound like alot but it beats nothing. They (TW) offer subscribers a decoder for 4 bucks a month. Thats what I have been using, and really cant say I have had any problems with it. For 48 dollars a year, I will glad use their's.

A few words about others' comments - red push: I have not seen any...chroma seems well distributed, no convergence problems either. I would recommend a line conditioner or some sort of protection. I would not even think about running risks with this thing. Protective screen tint: Once again, this is not a problem for me. I dont notice any distracting hues from the protective screen nor did I have to adjust any settings...I scratch my head on that one. Anamorphic or progressive signals are locked into FULL mode: I HOPE SO. I dont believe in altering aspect ratios from that which the director of a film intended. NTSC signals are the only thing I'll adjust, mainly to prevent burn-in on the screen, but on a DVD, NO- there are too many films with different aspect ratios, one would ruin Lawrence of Arabia by fiddling with this! Just my opinion.

To sum it all up...If you're looking at this set, seriously looking at this set, just buy it. Experts hold this thing in high regard. Pioneer has this business knocked, IMO, you cant go beyond this point in video, without parting with what I call 'exotic cash'- you know, projectors, line quadruplers and the like. Still, this was a landmark purchase for me; third or fourth next to my house and some cars I've bought. I have not been as happy with those purchases as I have this one. Go on, do it!

Not even close. I have seen hundreds of RPTVs in stores; not set up properly, hooked up with 75ohm cables, poor lighting. If people knew how fantastic these RPTVs looked - dealers would sell them like crazy!

Strength:

Color Depth & Clarity. Ease of use.

Weakness:

Shadow effect on all on screen text

I acquired the set from Pioneer Electronics as a replacement for a Pioneer Elite-700HD. The 700HD was replaced because of maintenance issues. The new 710HD has been in service for approx. six months and at the present time is completely out of service. I notified Pioneer a week ago 3/5/01 and am still waiting on a return call 3/12/01. This is unacceptable for a flagship product at this price level. When the set is working it is a joy to watch.

Strength:

DVD and HD video quality, ease of setup, dynamic range.

Weakness:

Needs a good signal. The set is so good, it shows every weekness

This television is so good, if you don't have a great feed every blemish is exagerated. I'm feeding it component in from a DV-37 and the combo is stunning. I also have it connected to a Dish Network 4700,(standard MPEG 2)and it is generally hard to look at. The artifacting, especially on the local channel uplinks gets so bad at times a mediocre antenna signal looks better. Watching football games is brutal. The near field content is ok, but the backgrounds are so compressed it gets hard to watch. If you're looking to buy this television, make sure you judge it on it's real capability. See it hooked up to a good DVD player or HD source. If you are going to use cable or satelite, see it demo'd that way. At times, the satelite signal is good. I suppose it depends on how Dish gets the feed and the original source material format.(gargage in, garbage out)They tell me that their signal to their users is fixed bandwidth, which basically says, "it's not our fault."

The setup is easy. The manual is brief and does not go into much detail about the technical benefits of some of the televisions auto settings. You'll have to experiment and see what they do. The convergance system is good. I feel it is a bit soft at the outer dimensional limits, but it does not reflect that much in DVD content. I feel that this is a set that will require the ISF calibration to get the best out of it, but well worth the investment because out of the box, it's beautiful and better that any set I've seen or used. The Runco I saw 6 months ago was great, but only available through specialty channels and very pricey. This set is not cheap, but nothing compares to it. If your willing to risk a bit, it can be purchases on the net at a very good price making it a good value.
