The best picture available.

Weakness:

This tv is simply awesome. I have never seen any rptv come close to the picture that this tv displays. Wayne gave a great review and I agree with everything he said. The 610 and 710 models all got straight 5.0 scores also. It is too bad that there are a couple that score this tv a 1. That score couldn't be more wrong. There is a thorough review on the 510 on etown.com. The link is http://www.etown.com/categories/product_review.jhtml?bodyinclude=product_review&productID=3592.
It is a detailed review where the reviewer raved about the tv and called it the best rptv he has ever viewed and said it was his new reference standard. The warranty is 2yrs. compared to others that are 1yr. He also mentioned like others that he connected a 3k panasonic progressive dvd player and said he saw no picture improvement at all which is how good the line doubler is. The newest issue of Stereophile guide to home theater just review the 610 and also raved about the picture. The 510 is identical to the 610 and if anything may have slightly more detail due to the smaller picture with the same 7" crt's. He said that the only picture that didn't get the full benefits of the increased resolution was the 4 X 3 mode which only displayed 320 lines. I don't know who would ever watch regular tv in 4 X 3 when you have a cinema wide mode which looks very good. Bob said that all modes looked terrible except the 4 X 3 mode. Something is wrong with this picture. Something wasn't hooked up right or something. The Elite allows you to save all picture adjustments for every individual input, even the tv input. This is a huge benefit. No other manufacturer does this. Anamorphic dvd's are incredible. The price is more but with the picture quality, cabinet, warranty and extra features (72 point digital convergence for every widescreen mode), the price of the tv is easily worth it. This tv also didn't look anywhere near as good at the dealer as it is in my room. The dealer had it hooked up with an s-video connection instead of component connections. He also didn't have the svm mode shutoff and didn't have the picture tweaked at all. I also shutoff the flesh tone control after reading the e-town review. Don't listen to the negative reviews. The tearing problem has been fixed that was mentioned in an earlier post and the green tint is completely eliminated except for the matrix which was filmed that way after using Video Essentials dvd to properly setup tint, color etc.

The only reason someone would buy another rptv hd ready set over this one is due to the budget and that is it. You will be reading and hearing more about the new Elite tv's as reviewers start to review them. They won't ignore these tv's because of how good they are. Two current reviews and all the rave reviews here on the 510, 610 and 710 can't be wrong. This tv will easily last me a very long time. I am still going to have an ISF calibration which will improve things even more. I also haven't removed the protective screen which I heard improves things further. My highend sound system for home theater was always way above in performance compared to the 35" Mitsubishi tv I was using
before buying the Elite. I was always distracted some what since the picture never matched the sound. Now the Elite PRO-510HD matches my theater sound in an unbelieveable way. I don't care if I ever go to the theater.

Good viewing!
Robert

Strength:

Picture quality right out of the BOX! Easily the best line doubler in the business.

Weakness:

Makes you want to be a couch potato. Cabinet finish looks nice, but is a pain in the --- to keep clean, (fingerprints and dust).

Used with Pioneer Elite DV-05 DVD, Yamaha RX-V995 Receiver, M&K 750 LCR's, Infinity RS-4's Rear, and Energy E:XLS-10 sub.

After spending weeks looking around at all different televisions, I was able to find one source that had all four models in one showroom. I was amazed at the picture quality of each unit as it sat alone and would have purchased any one of them on the spot. When placed next to each other and using the same source, the true quality came into view.

The Pioneer stood well above the others. The selling point of this television is the picture. All sources played are better, Satellite, DVD, VCR and Broadcast appear to have increased definition, clearity and color. The Pioneer does have a slight advantage in the tuner quality also. Though it isn't much, it still has the advantage.

The ease of changing preferences is not a strong point of any unit, but I felt the Pioneer was mid pack and something I could get used to very easily. The convergence was right on, out of the box, so set-up was no problem.

The sound quality was better or equal to the Sony, but far above the Mitz and Tosh.

The remotes are some of the greatest toys with any of these machines. If you use any of them long enough, they become second nature. There are some changes that could be made to the Pioneer remote, but adding one or two buttons for the receiver use is not a biggy in my book.

I would find it hard to believe that there is a better overall projection television made. In my oppinion, you are missing out if you don't own a Pioneer Elite PRO-510HD.

*Test done with all 4 televisions side by side. A desk chair was provided to view all TV's at the normal seating height. Total test time, 2.5 Hours. Audio King now hates me! (Television purchased elsewhere.)

Excellent DVD,HDTV. Great NTSC Satellite

Weakness:

Shows dust

Based on what I read on this forum and on others I was sold on the 510,especially after viewing one at a high end video store. This model has been out since late 1999,so I decided to wait for the Elite 520HD due in October.
The 520 is everything I expected it to be and more. All the great reviews were true.
One new feature allows my progressive DVD player to fill the entire screen. No more black bars.
I feed the monitor with the RCA DCT-100.A quick and simple raster adjustment off the menu will center the screen.Off by about 2 inches sideways before the fix.
I'm receiving 5 over the air HDTV channels and 2 from DirecTv. HBOHD and Channel 199 are incredible.
DVD in widescreen has to be seen to be belived. The line doubler in this thing must have added to the Elites steep price but it's worth every penny.
I'm extremely happy with this monitors performance. My wife loves the way it looks especially with the matching E 34-B Urushi component cabinate.
This is one expensive set.Compare it to all the others and it comes out a buy.Why spend 2,500 or 3,000 dollars on a set you'll hate watching.Wait and save for the best.

Weakness:

It's so good it's turning me into a couch potato.

Absolutely superb set, best RPTV on market, IMHO. Looked at everything available when I was shopping, and the only unit that came close was the Mitsubishi Platinum series. Still the Pioneer got the nod.

Just scanned these reviews and can only conclude that Bob was smoking something illegal when he penned that "review". Jayson's is well stated, however I do think had he shown more patience, he may have ended up keeping and loving the set. But I too would have been righteously p***ed off in his situation.

Mine has been the centerpiece of a very impressive HT system. It has behaved beautifully. I'd buy it again.

Strength:

The sets progressive scanning and 3:2 pull down detection circuits work exceptionally well. The screen mode function allows resizing with minimum distortion to picture geometry. Remote is completely backlit, great in dim lighting. Like the ability to store seperate adjustments in several memories.

Weakness:

Haven't yet seen my set with a true HD signal. Still dreaming. May have to get rid of DirectTV and go with Dish 6000 HD.

I have had the Elite Pro510HD in the living room for a year now, wonder how I ever watched anything less. This is a very fine wide screen television with an accurate progressive line doubler that produces an excellent picture. I use a Pioneer Elite DV-05 DVD player with it, and the picture quality is consistantly breath taking and clean. Even my girlfriend notices. I am planning to feed it with the new Denon DVD-2800 progressive player that I'm picking up this weekend (the upgraded software unit). Direct Dish satellite looks great on it, also, although some channels are consistantly cleaner than others. I did change the low grade speakers with paper wizzer cones, swapped them out with Rockford/Fosgate coaxes, and now the sound is much better, and so is the dynamic range. I use the new in-set speakers for center channel now. I did have to rework the convergence settings though, due to the considerably larger speaker magnets, but that was really no problem, just some time and a little effort (i.e.fun). I highly recomment the Elite 510 to anyone who is serious about video. You will be happy.

Strength:

The best there is.

Weakness:

None. Reflections from the protective cover.

This is the only TV out there whose 16:9 mode still looks good on normal 4:3 programming.

For example, on the Hitachi, the corners of the picture got stretched until it was horribly disproportional.

Of course, you can still notice the broadening of the picture, but its so good that you almost forget its happening.

The price is on the high side, but you get what you pay for.

The overall finish is excellent - we bought the companion Pioneer entertainment center for this TV, and the two together look awesome.

The only downside is the reflection from the protective screen. I have a picture window across from the TV which makes daytime view almost impossible, even with the drapes drawn. We'll be installing inside mounted blinds to help with this.

If this TV makes sense within your budget ... go for it.

Strength:

The best one in the market. Agree with what all what others have already stated in this forum about this EXPCEPCIONAL and STUNNING HDTV unit. Great!!!! The one and only!!

Weakness:

This TV is making me a couch potato . After 2 weeks is forcing me to and spend my savings in Blockbusters renting movies ( DVD) all weekends.

After 10 months shopping around for a real HDTV TV, I went for the 510. I got this unit from Sound Advice ( Kendall Store in Miami) and paid $4540 for the unit and the extended warranty for $500 ( 5 years) . Total cost was $5040.00

I have a Princeton Graphics AF3.0HD HDTV Monitor in my office and the only one close to the Princeton picture is the Pioneer 510.

No RPTV can beat the real resolution or detail in a CRT unit as the Princeton but I need to say that the one close to Princeton ( in resolution and detail) is the Pioneer 510 both in HDTV and playing DVD,s Satellite or Cable TV.

I can't compare Princeton versus Pioneer. Is like Orange and apples everyone king in his own league. Pioneer is bigger, Princeton is smaller. Pioneer have a better line doubler that Princeton but Princeton is for professional uses when Pioneer is for home uses. Again, DO NOT compare apples and oranges in this situation but honestly, I believe I have the best of both worlds ( CRT and RPTV in my situation here)

The 510 beats all Mitsubishis, Toshibas, and Sony that I test before. No way to compare all these brands with the 510 HD. Pioneer leave far behind the others and the Mitsubishi have jut a lot of marketing but not the real quality as the Pioneer.

After 10 months walking, testing, seating in many showrooms and evaluating ALL others, I finally decided for the 510HD and this is the best money anybody can spend for a real Home Theater unit.

If you have the money, Go for it!!!

This is my equipment setup:

Audio /Video receiver B&K AVR 307
Main ( for music listening) Speakers:
Infinity Rennaisance 80 biwered with MIT Terminator 2 biwired.

Surround Speakers Infinity Reference RS5

Center Speaker B&W CMTNT

Rotel CD Player RCD 975

Turntable Thorens TD-190
Pioneer Compact Disc Recorder PDR-W739

TDS True Dimensional Sound Passive connected in line
between Rotel CD and the 307.( This is an amazing equipment).

TV Pioneer Elite Pro 510 HD

Strength:

Superb picture quality, great for small apartments.

Weakness:

Questionable support from manufacturer

This is the smallest of Pioneer's new Elite series HDTV line. I purchased this set solely on the basis of reviews that I read on various newsgroups. I had visited several local dealers to view the picture quality of this set for both DVD's and cable (Not HDTV), and was not overly impressed. However, as is most often case, most of the dealers who carry televisions these days do themselves a diservice by failing to properly setup their displays.
What is worse is that most salesman I spoke with did not have a sufficient knowledge of the product. For instance, the salesman at the high end store that I purchased this set from was not aware that Pioneer had installed a much higher quality line doubler in the 510 and 610 sets, then was available in the original 700 model. That is really too bad.

Anyway, prior to viewing this set at home, the most stunning and realistic picture that I have ever seen on a
big screen tv was on the Runco 5800 which was introduced over a year ago. I am not going to say the Pioneer is better, but it does appear to equal the Runco, (which costs
approximately $6,000 more). Prior to purchasing this set I had a Sony 32 inch XBR (ISF Calibrated). I was very reluctant to upgrade to a big screen, because of how satisified I already was with the Sony. Now that I have viewed this set with over a dozen DVD's, I can say without qualification that the Pioneer 510 increases my overall enjoyment of each and every film that I view by an incalculable factor. I see detail and depth that I could never experience before with a small set. In addition, you get to see the facial expressions much better and this enables you to see many of the subtleties of an actor or actresses performance, contributing to a much greater appreciation of the film.

I was initially reluctant to purchase a widescreen television because I was wary of how well the set would
display 4 X 3 material from VHS tapes and regular cable.
This has not proven to be a problem. Regular television looks okay with the gray letterbox (takes a little getting used to though). For VHS I used the Cinemawide mode and this works very well. It cuts off the bottom and top of the picture slightly, but this mode preserves the original shapes of objects and people.

Some other important information. According to other individuals on the various newsgroups who have purchased this set, purchasing a progressive scan DVD player, or
a DVDO iscan plus will not, I repeat, will not improve the picture. This is not a bad thing though. The reason is that the quality of the line doubler installed in the 510 is so good, you don't need one. This is a really important point to consider when comparing price. Also, I have not yet
had this set calibrated. I am waiting for the CRT's to
burn in a bit. Once I have this done, I expect the picture will be even more stunning.

My recommendation, if you are considering a big screen tv
for a small apartment, or room, buy this set. It is a much
better choice then the previous benchmark for small apartments - The Toshiba TW40.

Excelant picture, even with VHS and crappy cable. looks are awesome. Out performs the competion!

Weakness:

Price!

I walk into Ultimate Electronics and it was their grand opening. I was so excited that they had Pioneer Elite products. I have been reading up on HDTVs for almost a year now. I had read that the Pioneer Elite were by far the best out there. Well the store had all of the HDTV rear projection TV fed with an intelaced DVD signal. This was cool because I wanted to see just how good each TVs line doubler was. I looked at all of the Sonys (grainy). The Mits were full of jaggies, and pushed red to much. the RCA just looked crappy. Well then I saw a Pioneer Elite Pro510HD. It looked very pleasing to me. Very smooth and detailed picture. At that point I was sold! The only thing was I wanted the new Pioneer Elite Pro520HD. The sales men said they just received four in but not at that store. Well I bought the Pro520HD and will have to wait for delivery. list price was $5,300.00, but I talked him down to $4,400.00 before taxes. They were doing no intrest for 15 months and nothing down, so the wife said go for it! One heck of a steel! I am in the Army and have been on leave for 30 days visiting the wife. I leave this friday so I will put it straight into my airconditioned storage unit with the rest of my home theater. I am not even going to open it. I have four more months to serve in Korea and then I am back to the good old USA! I will have to rent a U-haul and pull all my good stuff behind my Explore from Az. to GA., not fun. Man what a cool wife I have, I love her to death!

Here is my system:
Pioneer Elite Pro520HD (53")
Denon AVR-3300 (receiver)
Sony DVP-S530D (DVD)
Definitive Technology BP2002TL (front and back speakers)
Definitive Technology C/L/R2002 (center speaker)
Definitive Technology Pro Sub 100TL (center speaker sub)
Definitive Technology Power Field 15TL (LFE Sub only)
Philips Pronto Remote.
All Monster Cables.
NOT BAD FOR $15,000.00!

SFC Gary Bitters

P.S. I will review the Pro520HD after I have it up and running for six months.
