Strength:

The picture, functions and flexibility

Weakness:

? this is a 61" W I D E screen with a "real" picture. no weeknesses.

I was gonna get this tv new for $3900 but I desided to get a refurbished one for $1000 less, $2900 includidg TAX. I can do something with those $1000. Like buy a load of DVD's or ... ? well, I'll think of something. I don't regret buying it refurbished because you realy can't tell. There's no scratches on it and it looks as good as new, this is a farely new model so the parts on it can't be that old or have too many hours of use. I mean, this is a HITACHI refurbished tv, whatever was wrong with it was fixed.

I'm verry happy with my purchase. The picture it's excelent, the menu is easy to use, the price is low for this quality picture (even at $4500), need I say more?

How about to real life. The picture it's so clean and detailed (specialy when tuned with that Video Essentials DVD). I was thinking og getting the Toshiba, I can't remember the model but it sells for $5000, you guys probably know the one, also with a good picture but I think the Hitachi has a better picture for less money.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Many inputs (2 HiDef), sharp text and graphics, tweakable

Weakness:

Green cast at first but was able to adjust in service menu.

This is a review for the "61swx12b". I Have always been drawn to the Hitachi picture more so than other units in its price class as well as the more expensive ones. This set hasn't dissapointed me 3 month's into owning it. The colors are rich and accurate, the magic focus does a great job for convergence and registration, regular satellite (Directv) looks better than I expected and when set up with my progressive scan dvd player and reciever with the surround soung going, its quite amazing. I cant wait for the HDTV recievers to come down in price to see what this baby can really do! (Ratings are based on dvd and satellite viewing or I would probably give 5'stars)

Damn thing looks nice..Porn looks good on it..Its light..Its cheap...Only ideots by it and thnk it is big shi- you now :} ...

Weakness:

To bright,, smells bad when playing,,, can chech on fire easy,,very poor warrenty,,the fact it was made by HITACHI,,,,..

Well, well, well let start, I own a sony xbr 32 inch t.v love the pic , but its so small I was pissed off I bought it, so to save face I decide to get a big screen... I was looking at sony new xbr 61 inch, but it sucked so I went on... I decide to get a hitachi - boy was I pissed, well first of all, 16:9 aspect was good I loved the look.. HDTV stuff all sh-t, it sucked more so then sony.. At first I wish someone would of hit me over my head and just took my money instead of just giving it to these greedy basterds.. Ultrafocus f--ks up the t.v large too bright at times, the dark images off the dvds dont look real, like smugges..The sound was unwelcomeing at most times, to loud unbareing..Most features laqke imagination,, like something dum f--ks in trailer park homes would like.. The main thing I would like to mention the general public is it watch for over a long period orf the this model will chech on fire, witch most will, so please becarefull if you own on bought in the last year, 4 outof 10 do chech on fire..
The last thought is that I regreat buying this peice of sh-t in fact after mine cought on fire I gave it away to a mans home for jerk offs on wellfare,, I new purchese is the pro-710HD by elite so save your wellfare people this could be yours.....

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS./.
P.S DONT BUY IT FROM WERE I DID..

This post is in response to Jeff's "review" of the Hitachi.

I don't understand HOW jeff paid $6500 for this set. Heck I bought this set locally and only paid $3800! Generally the HIGHEST price I have seen was around $4200. I don't know where he purchased his set, but he got ganked!

As far his statement of their being "better technology" out there, I really don't know what the heck he is talking about. A lot of projection sets by other manufacturers use LAST years Hitachi lenses and electron guns in their sets. My set was manufactured in Late February of this year (2001), you can't get more state of the art than that!

There was a bad batch of sets that were manufactured in Jan of this year, but this can (and believe me does) happen more frequently with other manufacturers (especially mistubishi). I still find it amazing that something as complex and testy as an HDTV set, makes the journey from mexico to canada (hitachi hq) and then back to the states and then to my house without having any major problems. (at least this set) :)

I have seen ALL of the other sets currently availible on the market and Hitachi has the best picture. The ONLY set that possibly rivals my Hitachi, is the MUCH more expensive Pioneer Elite HD set.

The great thing about HDTV, is that, with the CORRECT input (I.E. progressive scan DVD or HDTV broadcast/satellite) almost ALL HD sets out there now will perform great. Without an HD souce or Progressive Scan DVD player, almost ALL other programs will look like c r a p. I have found that it is painful to watch "regular" broadcasts of my favourite shows. I missed the HD broadcast of the Sopranos this weekend and was forced to watch the non-HD broadcast and boy was it painful.

Lastly, Jeff had stated that the Hitachi's main strength was that it improved the "decor" of the room. Funny thing is that once this set is in your house it BECOMES the decor.

Strength:

Beautiful picture with HD source or DVD.

Weakness:

Problematic HD circuit.

This is my second attempt at trying to get into this HDTV technology, unsuccessfully I might add. I originally purchased a 53" version of the set, and I currently own the 61". First time round the set just kept kicking off from the moment it was plugged in, immediately returned the set and went for an upgrade to the 61" set. The picture is great but it has what I thought the same problem as what I've been reading about, with the DVD/HD component inputs having problems with the handling of extreme contrasts, black background with sudden bursts of white,ie: explosions, lightning, what have you.
My local service person has been nothing short of great, and PC Richards has been cooperative, helpful and as we speak, trying to get me a return authorization. Hitachi on the other hand is content pumping out one piece of junk after another and happy that the public they're selling to is the guinea pig for a prematurely released, and poorly engineered product. They are more than happy to keep saying try this and now try this, meanwhile the TV is not right.
This is just to those of you out there looking to buy a set, look at manufacturer's that are in their second or even third generation with this technology, because I'm quite confident that when Hitachi gets all the bugs out of this generation, they'll release the same set with the fixes and call it the next generation. All the manufacturers are probably the same, just find the one doing the longest.

Strength:

Great Set. The colors are natural and great picture quality for both regular broadcast and DVD. 6 element lens system compared to 5 element lens system in MITS, SONY etc. Hitachi's high quality lens and guns .

Weakness:

None I can think of. I would strongly recommend every one to ignore jeff's posting. He seems not serious about what he posted and his purchase price is 50% over Hitachi's MSRP of $4199.00.
Progreesive Svan DVD player blackout. This can be easily fixed by using Hitachi's service bulletin.

Folks this is one of the happiest investments I ever made. This set is one of the best HDTV sets out there in the market. I had MITS 65907 for a month and returned it to buy this great set.

It has a 6 element lens (18) system where as other brands like MITS have only 5 element lens system (15). This gives more picture details and clarity.

Hitachi manufactures the guns used in the RPTVs. So Hitachi keeps the best for themselves and the other manufacturers get a lower grade guns. Guns are a very important element for a RPTV.

Hitachi's lenses are used by other manufacturers (like Toshiba). So Hitachi keeps the best lenses for themselves.

This set upconverts everything to 480P thereby you get a great picture even with an ordinary cable. Don't waste your money getting a line doubler for this set.

You don't need a progressive SCAN DVD player for this set. The difference is hardly about 10-15 % which is not great!.

When the set was delivered there were faint circles in the center. The screen was replaced and no problems.

This set also has a built-in Dolby digital decoder which is very useful while watching HD programs. I use my Sony receiver just for DVD and VCR signals.

No dreaded Red push problem( that plagues MITS).

It also has a SMOOTH Wide stretch mode which is better than most RPTVs out there.

Strength:

Picture, the wheels are great for moving it out from the wall to hook something new to it.

Weakness:

Remote is useable but not outstanding.

I have only had this TV for 1 month, so far I'm thrilled with it. Regular Cable is OK, watchable but not oustanding, however I'm switching over to digital cable next week. DVD's are oustanding using the Monster composite cables and a non-progressive Sony DVD player.

I looked at all the brands for quite some time, yes, the pioneer elite is a amazing TV, however I paid less than half the price of the elite's and the picture on my TV is outstanding as well. Compared to the rest in a similiar price range, this TV competes well.

I called customer one time for a question, so far they are on the ball.

NONE

Weakness:

Only two component inputs; and no other inputs on rear; the third video input is an S-video input on the front. If you have more than HDTV and a DVD, you have no inputs to plug them in. HDTV picture sucked; very grainy. DVD was OK, nothing to rave about. Very disappointed. Same HD connection fro all three HDTVs.

I can say nothing good about this Hitachi HDTV. All three HDTVs were connected to the same HDTV connection (Time Warner with 5 HDTV Stations, NBC; CBS; WB; HBOHD; and Showtime HD. The Mitu was the best-BEAUTIFUL, perfectly clear and showed all the faults on the Movie stars faces, it was truely unbeleivable and was $1000.00 cheaper $3000.00; Toshiba-Good, a bit grainy; and $1000.00 cheaper $3000.00. Hitachi-super grainy. The front power LED, red light was very bright and distracting and disturbed the viewing. It made you feel as if someone was video taping you watching the TV. There is just nothing nice to say about this set and it is not recommended. But the Mitsubishi 65807, which is now $2400.00 at Brands Mart USA, Palm Beach, FL.

Strength:

Outstanding picture!!!

Weakness:

2 repairs :(

This is an update to my original review. The sound on my set went out. As other owners have mentioned, my set was one with problems. However, Hitachi is aware of the problem and my local repairer just repaired the set by putting in a jumper on the sound board which took 30 minutes to complete.
Despite the replacement of the screen and recent repair, I still feel it is an exceptional set in terms of picture quality and features.

Strength:

Fantastic Picture, wheels are great, if you need to hook something up you don't need 3 guys.

Weakness:

It's got a LED on the front that is annoying, I took a little black sticker and covered it up. I think I can tell when the TV's on!

With a digital signal, this TV has a beautiful picture. Watching movies or anything off a dish it great, and any decent DVD with Composite Video is even better, I won't have believed it my self if I hadn't borrowed the cable from a collegue.

I have seen a couple other big screens at other homes, and this TV blows them away, they all seem to look pretty good in a showroom, but this one looks better once you get it home.

Sound is not bad all by itself, it's got optical in, I havn't tried it yet as I run everything thru my surround setup, but that would probably help.

Bang for the Buck, this TV's a player!
