Strength:

Great remote...works with ease. MAGIC FOCUS is supurb!

Weakness:

None really. It does take a few minutes of warm up before you get your best picture, although this is more common than weakness.

After much research (probably too much) I opted to buy the Hitachi, and I am glad I did! Picture quality with digital cable is not the greatest, but what rear project tv is? Movies from the DVD format are incredible! Beautiful picture! The output/input options, sound, and looks are great. I too would recommend this TV to anyone that dares to believe bigger is not always better.

Strength:

Outstanding picture with DVD. Right size for apartment dwellers--won't dominate your room.

Weakness:

Slight red push. Acceptable, but not stellar picture with standard definition digital cable--but no worse than those of other projection TVs I auditioned. No DVI input.

This TV is outstanding with DVD in progressive mode*. Watching an excellent tranfer like "The Lord of the Rings, Extended Edition," one can see every detail. The picture is filmlike, tact sharp and three dimensional. This set is an extremely accurate video transducer: if the DVD transfer is excellent, you'll see the pock marks on an actor's face, if the transfer is less than optimal or the master was sub par to begin with, you'll see the resultant film grain. On DVDs like "Dark City" blacks and shadow detail are also superb. Overall, there is a little red push, but this can be ameliorated for the most part by fiddling with the standard color settings on the TV or with the settings in my Sony DVP-NS999ES DVD player. If the performance is this good uncalibrated, I'm looking forward to an even better picture after professional ISF calibration. This TV is the perfect size for an apartment. Image is best when sitting about eight to nine feet away. I recommend the optional stand, or using a third-party stand/console that is 15 inches high. Elevate it any higher, and the TV will be too high for optimum viewing. I considered the 51 inch Hitachi, but decided against it because it would have dominated my room, though its picture was outstanding. Buy that or the 57 inch if you have a large room. The weak point is, as with EVERY CRT rear projection I've viewed, with standard NTSC broadcast pictures. The picture with AT&T digital cable is acceptable, but not as sharp as that on my mid-90s 27" Sony Trinitron. However, since I use the Hitachi for 90% DVD viewing, this is not a big issue. The last shortfall is the lack of a DVI input. For now, not a problem. I suppose when HDTV comes online in my area I'll make due with an AT&T or third party HD converter box that I hope will use component inputs. Or, by that time I might be ready to upgrade to a totally integrated HDTV anyway. All in all, I'm extremely satisfied and, if the TV's reliability holds up, will gladly buy Hitachi again. Highly recommended. *CNET reviewed the 51 inch Hitachi and found that their DVD player worked better in interlaced mode with the TV left to do 3:2 pulldown. I didn't find this problem with my set. Progressive mode from both my Sony DVP-NS999ES and cheaper Sony DVP NS715P are outstanding.

Also viewed the Toshiba 42 inch. Very punchy and vibrant picture, but not as sharp and filmlike as the Hitachi with DVD. Had slightly more grain and was beamy to boot (a narrower viewing angle). The c

The picture is awesome esp dvd's. My previous set was a calibrated toshiba 16x9 40" so I was very surprised that the hitachi was so clear and vibrant. Out of the box it was not a pretty site but you have to make some avia or video ess adjustments with the levels and make sure to change the picture mode to MOVIE setting...I think it's default to sports and it looks really bad with directv. Hope this helps you hitachi users cause the the 1st couple days takes some breaking in. Mine is the 43FWX20B with that 5 lens technology which I don't know much about but I can tell you the picture is just so bright and clear for a projection set. I cannot be more thrilled. Next step is hdtv this sat appt with directv...and that should be cherry on top. Got it for $1699 at circuit city.

Weakness:

Picture is very fuzzy, grainy. Hitachi customer service says you have to accept it this way. Will only be clear with HD reception.

Very dissapointing
