Strength:

Good picture, remote seems ok.

Weakness:

occasionally loses signal from cable

Been very happy with the TV for the size and price. Occasionally I lose the cable signal but went to Radio Shack and purchased a box that pulls in a stronger signal which eliminated all problems. Very good TV for the price -I paid $899.00 at Best Buy on sale about a year ago.

Strength:

Very affordable big-screen tv w/decent picture quality.

Weakness:

Convergence on my set will not stay put. It jumps all over the place.

Thank goodness I paid for the 4-year warranty. I've already had 2 techs come out and try to fix it. I've had it with this set! Just today I went back to Best Buy and am exchanging it for a 50" Toshiba model (of course I am paying the difference!)

Strength:

great size for a small room. great picture ,a nice remote to use for any system( dvd, vcr, dss )

Weakness:

needs more s-video conections for dss,and dvd

I have the 46gw947 stereo monitor tv .Im realy happy with the picture and sound quality. I have a rca satellite receiver hook up to my tv and it gives the best picture you ever see on a big tv,also the tv has 900 lines of resolution that helps a great deal.A lot of bigger tvs does not have as much resolution ,which means a less define picture. My family injoys watching movies alot with satellite ,and dvd .DVD gives a little better picture, but a lot clearer crisp sound.I got the screen protecter from rca (ssh525 part#)whitch is really nice,it gives the picture a glassy look,if you like that kind of thing.A great tv for the money($995)

Strength:

This is a good size TV at 46 inches its quite larger than the 36 inch tube sets, small by rear projector standards.Available at Best Buy or Circuit City for $1000.00

Weakness:

Not as tight as a tude TV in picture Clarity

The GE 46GW is the ideal TV for a budget large screen Home theater system. This unit is readily available for $1000.00. The quality of the picture of larger 50 to 55 inch TV's appear to drop unless you are looking at High End units, Mitsubishi Gold or Hitachi Theater View which are close to $2000.00. There are plenty of Audio and Video adjustments to tune to your taste.I have had many compliments on this TV and am looking forward to seeing it connected to a DVD unit. I think you would be hard press getting a better value than the GE 46GW, RCA 46 is the same unit with PIP cost about $300.00 to $400.00 more. I purchase a new 19 inch for $150.00 for my PIP feature and still save $200.00. Remember this TV was 2500 to 3000 dollars five years ago.

Strength:

The cheap price compared to other sets. Bright picture with first surface mirror feature. (Especially with protective shield) Guide Plus TV guide is an absolute dream. Why bother with a TV guide when it's built right into the set?

Weakness:

A lack of component video inputs, and only one s-video input. Lack of Velocity Scan Modulation.

The model number of the television I purchased is the 46GW947. I'm impressed by the overall quality of the set and the aspect that impresses me the most is just how much clearer this rear projection set is than some smaller tube televisions. That is a little bit of a surprise to me. When viewed from the proper distance at about 15-20 feet the text when watching cable television is awesome. I can read the scores for football and basketball games without straining my eyes a bit. On tube televisions that I've had in the past I've noticed a blurring effect in the region of that small text and logos. The 46GW947 does not have that lousy effect.

A funny thing that I notice with I guess this set and rear projection sets in general is that when watching 4:3 television broadcasts you actually get to see slightly more of the broadcast that is cut off by a tube set in the upper and lower corners. I noticed that the rear television set has a more square picture while a direct-view tube can have the corners skewed in cutting off part of the image. Naturally that portion of an image is not that important to look at because primarily that is where a logo would be, but it is nice to be able to see the whole image. The same as I've described above could be said for Pan-and-Scan VHS video tapes as well.

When watching DVDs is when a novice to the rear-projection television experience really gets to see why these television sets cost more than tiny tube sets. I had started out without a protector screen and was impressed by the color separation and brightness of DVDs driven through the single S-video input. I later had an automotive glass place cut me a protection screen. The whole thing cost me about thirty dollars, and I installed the screen protector myself. Like others have said it adds some brightness and gives the image a more glossy look. I'm pleased with it.

It has been an awesome experience dependant on DVD quality. I swear I went through periods where I thought that this television was a load of crap because a certain DVD didn't look good, but the problems with fuzziness and pixelation were much more a result of bad DVD transfers than anything else. I put on "True Lies" for my brother and sister-in-law who were visiting from out of town and was pleased by their response. "That explosion was awesome." That was the kind of reponse I got. To the average fan of movies, television, and gaming this television will not disappoint. It surely is not the best television but it surely doesn't cost as much as the best television.

I do have a few regrets in purchasing this television. While I don't think you would be disappointed by what this television is capable of I think if you really shop around you can get more for a similar price. I was a bit impatient and bought this set because it was the cheapest at the time of year when sales weren't that impressive. I would have really liked to get the 52-inch version of this television. Not only is that a larger set, but it has velocity scan modulation and that helps with separating light and dark with better smoothness and clarity. On a set without velocity scan modulation you might have seen a streak across the screen when a white letter is displayed on a black background. Its not a huge advancement but surely it is one that would have been welcome in the 46GW947. Its a great set for the price, but you might be able to do better.

Strength:

Bargain price, very good picture quality, nice range of colors, nice remote, pretty good sound, picture in picture, 1 year warranty on parts and labor.

Weakness:

Only 1 S-Video input, speakers could be more powerful, long term reliability is unknown, cheap speaker grilles

GE 46GW948

I known that the GE brand name doesn't carry a lot of credibility, but I was very surprised by the overall quality of this tv. Hell, if this TV had a Sony nameplate on it, it would probably sell for $1,600.

I paid only $799 at Best Buy during their labor day sale. In addition, I got 0% financing for 18 months. What a deal!

I know that most people would overlook this tv simply because of its GE name. If it makes you feel any better, this TV is basically an RCA. Whatever the case, this is a damn good tv for the price. The picture quality is very good when using a digital source such as DVD. Analog sources look so so.

I cannot believe the difference between a rear projection tv and a tube tv. I have a 32" Toshiba CZ32V61. This is a highly rated 32" model. However, I would choose the GE any day over my Toshiba. The Toshiba is a nice tv, but it doesn't even come close to displaying colors like the GE does. I have never seen black look so black on a TV screen.

I don't understand why someone would drop $1,499 on a Phony Baloney Sony WEGA, when they can get this model for only $799. Hell, with this TV, you are not paying $500 bucks just for the brand name. I admit that this tv doesn't produce the best picture quality that money can buy, but you sure as hell cannot get a better tv for $799.

By the way, I recommend the optional SuperShield protector. It improves picture quality slightly, but more importantly it protects the TV screen. I purchased mine at RCA.com for $99

Strength:

Fantastic value, great picture

Weakness:

Only one S-Video input

Having read the other reviews that are posted on this site, I am surprised that people tend to either love this TV or hate it. Some people apparently had the TV die on them during the first month of use, while others claim that its better than a Sony.

I happen to be one of those people who is having a great experience with this TV. I have the newest model (46GW948), and perhaps GE has gotten around to fixing any bugs that may have plagued the earlier models. The picture quality is fantastic. I mostly watch DVDs, and I sit only about 6 or 7 feet away from the TV. When you're that close to, flaws tend to really stand out. Yet, I am not noticing any flaws. The blacks are very black and the picture detail is terrific. The TV has 900 lines of resolution, and any digital source looks great. Video tapes, of course, don't look nearly as impressive, but tapes tend to look bad on almost any TV. Once you get spoiled with the picture quality of DVD, tapes simply don't cut it - not even SVHS tapes. The fact is that I was able to spend only $850 and come away with a very nice big screen TV.

Regarding inputs, many people are complaining that there is only one S-Video Input. While this is a genuine complaint, it has not affected me in the slightest. I have a nice receiver that has 4 S-Video Inputs, so I do all of my video switching through that. When you set your system up this way, all you need is one S-Video input.

I must say, however, that given some of the bad reviews of this TV, I chose to buy the 4-year extended warranty with my set. Why take any chances? So, while I cannot predict what may happen to my TV 3 or 4 or 5 years from now, I can say that I highly recommend this set based on my experiences up to now.

Strength:

Low Cost/Size ratio

Weakness:

Lack of inputs, not exceptional clarity

I bought this TV immediately out of college to replace my 19" tube. Granted, I've always preferred the look of a tube TV (they're much more crisp), but I wanted something large enough to be viewed across the room, especially for letterbox DVD's. Overall, I'm satisfied, at least for what I've paid for it.
This is a very good entry-level projection. For $800 you can't get much more, and many models with only nominal improvements in clarity & features are much more expensive. But still, you get what you pay for. If you plan on building a high-end home theater, this is not the TV for you. I personally only plan to keep this a few years until HDTV becomes more prevalent and less costly.
My main complaint with the TV is the lack of inputs. It's only got one S-Video/Component input. At this point I'm not sure if I'm going to have anything else to connect, but I'd like the capacity, especially since I'm going to slowly work on building a home theater system, with a newer TV being the last step.
If you're working with a budget and want a big-screen, buy this. If you have more to spend, you may want to wait for HDTV to drop in price, and get a better TV rather than blowing it now on a better name. Also, from what I've seen so far, get the extended warranty, but if you go to Circuit City, talk the guy down. It's expensive, but if you threaten not to buy the TV, he'll drop the price (or at least he did for me).

Price, you get what you pay for!!!!

The first GE TV I received from Best Buy, I had to return it immediately because the color would not stabilize( meaning it would alternate between warm and cold colors). After the TV was replaced, i had no problems with it until two years ago. Now I've had the TV in and out of the shop for three or four times with the extact same problem. The problem is a snowy picture with an annoying stactic sound. Thank god I bought the extended parts and labor plan with the most important NO LEMON policy. The next time the TV acts up, I can return it back to Best Buy and replace it with a better Tosiba TV and pay the difference. My advise to those who wish to purchase this TV is to buy the four year extended parts and labor policy with a no lemon policy.
