Yamaha YST SW305 Subwoofers

Yamaha YST SW305 Subwoofers

DESCRIPTION

- Advanced Active Servo technology: a complementary amplifier/speaker system utilizing negative impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass from small speakers.
- High amplifier power assures enough power to deliver movie theater-like bass effects and the dual 8-inch spruce cone drivers translates the power into clear bass sound.
- Front panel controls make it easy to see the settings and make adjustments when necessary.
- Bass selector tailors the subwoofer's output for video or music at the touch of a switch.
- Subwoofer is magnetically shielded so it can be placed near a TV monitor or receiver without fear that it will degrade the picture.
- Volume control permits the perfect matching of the subwoofer's output to the overall volume of the system.
- Signal sensing on/off: when the subwoofer detects an audio signal, it turns its power on, when it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off.
- Phase normal/reverse switch makes it easy to phase the subwoofer with the other speakers in your system.
- Dual inputs allow the versatile subwoofer to accept either line level or speaker level input signals.
- Heavy-duty three-way speaker terminals accept banana plug and a variety of other connectors, as well as speaker wire.
- Handsome black ash finish blends in with room decor.

Strength:

bass bass and more but kick''n bass

Weakness:

my neighbors in the house next door are complaining

I was originally looking at the JBL PB250 12" dia sub and the definitive technology prosub 200tl. The def.tech sub has a range down to 18hz which is better than the yamaha but the JBL stops at 28hz. I also read alot of stuff online stating that you should never get any sub smaller than 12". Then I found the yamaha which is dual 8" drivers (which moves 89% as much air as a single 12" driver) and had a frequency response down to 20hz. So with a baby on they way I decided this was the sub for me. It has a variable high freq. cut off and an auto on/off and a phase rev. switch. But enough technical lingo... ... how does it sound. This thing rocks. It shakes my walls. Billy Joels greatest hits album is incredible. The pod race from Star Wars I made me jump for cover as I thought I was going to get run over and I almost started to cry during pearl harbor. This sub will not let you down but then again I never watched the haunting... Finally there are alot of subs out there with bigger amps but don''t let the fact that this is only 200W scare you away because the sound of the sub depends alot more on other stuff than just the wattage visit the harman audio web site and read what they have to say about sub.''s. This Sub really impresses me in my large room it is 15''x20'' with 16'' tall vaulted ceiling. my system: tv: mitsubishi 55" HDTV Reciever: Yamaha 5440 (65Wx5) DVD: Sony nsp700 Speakers: Front main: JBL N26ii Center: JBL N-center Rear sorround: JBL N24AW Subwoofer: Yamaha yst 305 (dual 8" 200w)

Strength:

Awesome, floor-pounding bass. Great low-end. Price has to be the greatest strength.

Weakness:

Subs do have some slight problems when it comes to super tight/punchy bass. Every once-in-a-while I can get them to pop, but a quick adjustment to the sub output on my receiver eleminates it when needed.

Great sub for the money. I loved the way one sounded that I went right back out and purchased another. Unit handles tight bass very well, but the low end is incredible. Try listening to Cake - Short Skirt/Long Jacket. I keep the High Cut-off at around 90 and the volume about 3/4 up and very seldom have to adjust. Good enough to keep the neighbors awake!!!!!

Strength:

Compact design - fits in the corner of the room for bass efect. Front panel buttons. Fair price.

Weakness:

A remote control would help tweak the bass level and volume while testing the whole audio system.

Bought this subwoofer in a rush - needed it for a party that night. So, I drove at Best Buy and listened to all the subwoofers they had (Sony, JBL, whatever. From about 6-7 - 10", 12" -subwoofers that I tested back and forth, this Yamaha impressed me mostly. Definitely, it delivered the best bass in the store, far better than units priced at $499 and lower.

Strength:

Very musical and also very good for movies. I have given it 4/5 as I dont think any product is perfect.

Weakness:

None yet.

I purchased this sub after listening to many subs for over 6 months. I tested this unit with Jeff Buckley''s Grace CD and found it filled in the bottom range perfectly. It is excellent for music, producing very tight and accurate base (All music from Enya to The Offspring). It also seems to have pleanty of punch for movies. It is extreemly easy to set up and fits in very well with my Creek CLK20 Mains (8 inch drivers).

Manual could of provided alot more info.

I had many reservations before buying this sub. Best Buy is a horrible place to check out audio equipment, especially subs. Made the purchase based on what I read and the fact I could return it. This sub was everything I had hoped for. The Yamaha technology makes for a very clean sound. It has more than enough kick to shack my medium sized room. It actually rattles the dishes in the cupboards of my kitchen. I''ve yet to turn my system up past three quarters. It completely compliments the bass of my front towers. Tried it out with a couple of bookshelf speakers and it worked very well. Music is great. DVD is even better. It took me about a week to find the best place for it in my room to optimize the sound. Definantly has to be experimented with to get the most out of it. Best sub I could get in my price range.

Strength:

Compact and powerful, one of the best in its class

Weakness:

does not pass the "HAUNTING TEST" this dvd causes the 8 inch woofers to rap rap rap.....

First off,let me tell ya that this is a great and accurate sub. It has a 200 watt amp,and it shows. But ,while playing the Haunting the poor guy lost it. For this reason alone I had to return it. I feel that a sub must be able to strut its stuff without my worring that its gonna get damaged, and even with the volume down low this unit lost control. I am not going to pan this product. For its price its a decent performer. But a 5 star product it not.

I love my JBL speakers but the Yamaha subwoofer sounded better to me than the JBL or any others. A must have to complete your sound system, gives you the lows that your fronts lack.
